just a heads up, you'll need maya or else this will be 100% useless unless you know how to use it via command line.
Pixar is working on getting it to work in another softwares.
Holy crap.. I'm free? When was someone gonna tell me about this?
That'll do, Renderman. That'll do.
I've been told it's really complicated and hard to use compared to Arnold and Mental ray.
Guys, this is not a movie engine or anything of those sorts, this is "just" a renderer like many otheres. (e.g. https://www.vray.com/ or https://render.otoy.com/ or http://www.maxwellrender.com/) Many of those already offer a great discount or are even free for students, so this was to be expected to happen. Nonetheless this is a good thing.
i kind of want to try it but with my only experience being sfm i doubt id be able to
Like they are even remotely the same thing.
SFM is closer to Pixar's Presto, which is their animation tool (separate from Renderman iirc). SFMs layout is very similar to Presto and has a lot of similar functionalities. It's a giant downgrade of course, but to be honest SFM is the closest thing us regular plebs will come to Presto. Pixar is very quiet about Presto itself, so most of this knowledge comes from their behind-the-scenes and the occasional demonstration.

In case someone didn't know. Renderman is being used on a lot of movies nowadays, not just Pixars own. http://renderman.pixar.com/view/movies-and-awards

I haven't really seen many DEDICATED 3d animation software, like source filmmaker or presto or even marionette.
Now if only I knew how to work Maya. I've only ever worked in 3DS Max.

Import models from max and set up materials in maya and render.
