Nintendo Switch online services will cost $17 to $26 a year
Why is it bullshit? Dedicated servers take money to run. If it only costs 17 bucks a year to play Mario Kart 8 or Splatoon online with actually decent latency then I'll take it in a heartbeat.
because I just want to transfer my pokes to the next game, not have a poorly controlled microsoft excel simulator.
So long as you're actually getting something out of it and not just paying to use a function of an already £400 console and the £50 games with it then sure.
That is 26$ more than I'd pay for Nintendo's online service in the past.

Only if you're on the NA psn tbh. The free games are pretty much universally better on Japanese PSN, sans the virtual novels that pop up now and then. Granted that means having 2 accounts and knowing how to bumble your way about in Japanese menus, but still. I got far more value out of occasionally buying a month on my Japanese PSN vs ever having plus on my NA PSN.
Is it worth it for "free" games alone? I don't think so, it never is going to be, but if you're wanting more value from the games, usually the JPN set is better.

I can stand by a subscription fee if it actually shows that their online infrastructure is improving,
yeah it's always been free, and still is for those consoles, but it doesn't actually mean it was any good,
It 'just worked' but that's about it
I have high hopes for change, now that 'Nintendo accounts' are a thing, so it shows sings of improvement, and moving past the old system
and no more friend codes I swear to god
Yeah Nintendo's old online infrastructure was antiquated as shit. I remember when my partner's Wii U started dying you have to go through a meticulous process just to transfer the data and everything you bought online to a new console.
Said process consistes of literally putting the two consoles and their gamepadd next to each other, then shifting an SD from one console to another in what took about an hour.
Okay well shit I was expecting $60 a year like the other services.
I'm still not buying one immediately though, and I'm not going to unless the Switch's online is of a decent speed, unlike my 3ds. I refuse to pay for a service that was free while gaining no performance boost from it.
The 3ds speed is abysmal because it's radio is slow as fuck, there's nothing wrong with transfer speeds when you aren't limited by the 3ds radio
Switch's should be far better

If the switch doesn't come with 2x2 AC I'm going to be rather disappointed.

Microsoft seems to do a better job with free games per month on xbox, so far all the games for gold have been previous AAA titles or solid indie games, and the one free xbox 360 emulated game has mostly been (so far) a classic or a popular title
It wasn't too bad when Sony first started it as they had 5 or so years of PS3 backlog to put up. But as that ran out they started relying on indie games and repeated a few I think.
The PS4 doesn't quite have that back catalogue of games, so it's not super surprising that you'll be getting either indie games or other less in demand titles. Still happy I managed to get Crysis 3, Tomb Raider, Spelunky, Luftrausers, Thief (lol that lasted less than an hour before I got bored), Arkham Asylum and many more actually reasonably decent games on the PS3.
thats not really an excuse since xbone doesnt have a great catalogue either but microsoft normally settles on popular titles like metal gear solid and tomb raider as examples
Well there's the step forward. Waiting on the two steps back.

Yeah no if anything the PS4 might have more total games thanks to Japanese developers while the Xbone's titles are generally speaking titles from Western developers that get shared on both consoles.
As much as I'm a Sony fanboy, their ps+ catalogue sucks. Hell, even when they give away a non-indie game on the Xbone it's a fucking spinoff or something like Infamous: Last Light or Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell. And honestly, if they're giving away nothing but indie games, they could still do better than Gone Home and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. They've given away a few good games like the Resident Evil Remake, Rocket League, Broforce, and Grim Fandango, but honestly almost every month I'm more excited by the Xbone catalogue, and I don't even own one yet, I'm just glad I'll have a good backlog of games to play when I do.

They did pretty well this month though, despite 3 being the worst game in the LBP series.
Not a Hero is really good I hear and Starwhal is a nice party game.

Dunno, sounds like the 1 game rental of a nes/snes game a month aint much better.
The annoying thing is PSN swells my library with (mediocre) games. There's usually one good game and then filler, so 12 games.
I'd feel a lot better if I could actually keep the decades old nes games, did they backpedal the "rental" system yet? Not even that exciting when I could fit the entire library on my phone/DS.
