Why do you get a vote? You're not scottish, if it was vice versa and scotland was the one holding the cards in the uk and england wanted to become independent you would not want irish, welsh or scottish leaning in on your vote.
You are right that we shouldn't get a vote, but you could easily argue that we should get a vote as the outcome will seriously effect us one way or another. Of course, it would be pointless. If you included rUK then it would be an instant no vote. I don't know many people in the UK outside of Scotland who support independence. [editline]18th September 2014[/editline]
If a yes vote does win, it'll be interesting to see how the NHS is handled, how the economy over there (and here, but to a lesser extent) goes, stuff like that. Depressingly, the vast majority of Labour and Left-Wing votes in the UK come from Scotland, so if they leave the UK, say hello to a possible permanent Conservative government.
This is my major worry with it all, if Scotland does become independent then good on them (self determination ftw) however it will really screw the rest of us up IMO. I can't find them right now but I am sure I saw someone a while ago went back over many previous elections taking Scotland out of the equation and it does not look good.
So if it is a majority yes, how would they go about declaring themselves as an official independent country? And the results will be declared tomorrow, right?
The polls have closed so I'll be taking this as Facepunch's official prediction - it's a no And Facepunch's official stance - nah fuck it But more people think Scotland will be independent than think it should be - 26.96% think it should happen, while 36.76% think it will happen.
Why would English voters get to vote in a referendum for Scotland? It's a Union, a voluntary joining, of course we should be allowed to have our own vote on leaving it.
This discussion proves how badly this whole things has been thought out. Because I'm not Scottish I can't have a say about something that will affect me? Mortgages, interest rates etc. will change if a 'Yes' vote is passed. I also don't like that 16 year olds are included. I know some argue that those that are at voting aren't responsible or waste their vote due to disillusionment in politics, but it is their vote to waste. A child in the relative safety of education and dependent on others for housing cannot make a full a reasoned argument for voting either way.
That's like saying Citizens of the 50 states should get a vote whether or not to incorporate Puerto Rico as a full state.
I think the obvious thing to do here is have the citizens of the 50 states vote whether Scotland should become the 51st state or not.
That's like saying Citizens of the 50 states should get a vote whether or not to incorporate Puerto Rico as a full state.
That's already the case. Congress has to vote on whether or not to admit new states.
That's like saying Citizens of the 50 states should get a vote whether or not to incorporate Puerto Rico as a full state.
We do though. Not through a direct vote as in this instance, but through the congressmen we elect. Similarly no state is allowed to leave the union without a successful revolution or a majority decision by the other states in the union. Once you're in, you're in unless the nation as a whole says you're out.
We will gain independence. Toxx me if you want. I have faith in the people of Scotland to do the right thing.
What have you done?!
We will gain independence. Toxx me if you want. I have faith in the people of Scotland to do the right thing. (User was permabanned for this post ("Toxx" - Orkel))
Well fuck me sideways and call me Salmond. I can't say I'm not VERY disappointed today, but if that's the will of the Scottish people, so be it. Within the United Kingdom we stay, and I'll accept that until the next referendum.

On a side note: The first thing I did when I heard the result this morning was tan half a bottle of whiskey to drown my sorrows, and suddenly the world seems a lot better. [editline]19th September 2014[/editline]
What have you done?!
Gotten myself banned evidently [editline]19th September 2014[/editline]
To be fair he didn't specify when Scotland will become independent.
This is true... :P
That's already the case. Congress has to vote on whether or not to admit new states.
Have you voted in any of the referendum's that have occurred in Puerto Rico? In the case of Scotland, the Queen would have had to still sign off on the deal, no different than Congress signing off on Peurto Rico becoming a state.
