I was barely even aware there was a problem.
If you actually read gaming news and journalism you'd have known that it's been shit and corrupt for years, so you go elsewhere and stop supporting the corrupt ones. I stopped going to a lot of sites years ago and found better sources that weren't being paid off. Places that gave actually fair reviews of games and had good discussions on various topics with no biasm.
The main problem of this gamergate shit from what i gathered was corrupt gaming journalism. So we stop supporting those that are corrupt. If enough people stop buying into it and seek info elsewhere the problem is solved.
that's what people are doing
the reason that it keeps turning into a giant media circus is because those very websites are intent on spinning the whole thing into "gamers try to eliminate women"
Of course people are going to defend themselves when allegations like that are being spread.
You guys remember when video games were - more or less - innocent from the mainstream? When everyone else considered gaming to be a weird/creepy niche group of people that just did their own thing? And when death threats weren't thrown around to anyone who was willing to speak their minds on the internet? Granted, that always happened, but it sure wasn't as vile as what we've been seeing over the last several months.
I miss being young, naive and able to enjoy any video game I played, even if it was complete shit. :(
Yeah but at those times games were heavily criticized in mainstream medium. They didn't arrive in the media unless a soccermom was insulted.
So when games were on the tv they were being blamed for SOMETHING.
Also, how do you explain GG giving $70,000 to TFYC, the project to help women succeed in gaming.
http://pixietalksgamergate.wordpress.com/2014/09/16/tfyc-questions/
none of it really went to charity.
There we go.
I fail to see how that changes anything. Donating money to hide past misdeeds does not change the past. /r/TheFappening tried that too. Companies that want to make people forget what they did wrong always donate money to groups they've wronged, so your argument doesn't hold any water.
To be fair, that's kind of like excusing Dow Chemical Company for the Bhopal Disaster because they donated money to fight cancer.
it's gotten to the point where all of these "Gamergate is worse than ISIS/nazis/chemical weapons" comparisons have stopped being outrageous and have just become kind of bizarre
Like, do you actually have no concept of how evil those other things are, or are you completely deluded when it comes to gamergate? How could this make sense in anyone's mind?
Those who disagree with GG do not necessarily deny there are problems with gaming journalism, they're just against using a movement of pure hatred that disproportionately attacks women as a means to fix gaming journalism.
Literally how fucking dumb can one person be
Gamer Gate funded indiegogo

Then people aren't doing it to the best of their abilities. Just fucking ignore them, don't defend yourself when they start using some scapegoat to frame us.
Stop caring what some corrupt site says, if you have enough proof to warrant you leaving the site for their corrupt views then there isn't a problem and you don't have to defend yourself. If anything but that comes up against you, you don't have to defend your position as it's just a method of deflection they're using.
To be fair, that's kind of like excusing Dow Chemical Company for the Bhopal Disaster because they donated money to fight cancer.
but they have to cause an accident first for that to apply.

Fine.
It's kind of like how redditors sent free pizza to Boston Police officers to hide how badly reddit destroyed the Boston Marathon bombing investigation.
Is that a little better?
To be fair, that's kind of like excusing Dow Chemical Company for the Bhopal Disaster because they donated money to fight cancer.
That is a terrible analogy. People dieing =/= Sexism. Not to mention the fact is that we don't even know if the Dow Chemical Company is responsible for it or not.
How has Spessmehren not been banned yet?
he purposely comes to Gamergate threads, shits them up and even when presented with evidence he spews lies and tries to be the biggest tool he can just so he can 'le trole XD'.
this whole movement could have gone over a lot more smoothly if they just started the hashtag and shit around the doritos pope incident or the jeff gurstmann thing
no discussion on those topics was forbidden
no one was called a white misogynistic terrorist for spreading pictures of doritopope
who actually takes these death threats seriously it seems everyone famous online gets them and i can see just how effective they have been *sarcasm
I doubt any of those stupid fat neckbeards could even get off their computer chairs let alone kill anyone

I think you are forgetting the fact that at no time in the past was the GG was ever truely sexist.

imagine some random guy online that you've never met showing that he knows exactly where you live and what your phone number is and on top of that threatens you, i'd be atleast a little bit worried.
would you mind backing up any of these jingoistic claims about GG being "a movement of pure hatred"
I mean given the amount of women and minorities involved with GG I'd think that would be bullshit, but who knows
maybe TB's first thought after waking up from his cancer surgery was "I hope we can get rid of all these damn women"
All you have to do is look at the roots of the movement. It all started over a single woman, expanded to multiple women, and only started involving a few men when they were connected to those women.
I get that there are people in the movement trying to give it a more positive direction, but I think it's too late for that now.
I'm just gonna put this out here in light of how quick people have been to declare a false flag any time someone anti-GG is threatened: it's just as possible that these were fake or hyped up for publicity too.
Fine.
It's kind of like how redditors sent free pizza to Boston Police officers to hide how badly reddit destroyed the Boston Marathon bombing investigation.

So, reddit fucked up the Boston Marathon investigation.
What did Gamer Gate do wrong?
All you have to do is look at the roots of the movement. It all started over a single woman, expanded to multiple women, and only started involving a few men when they were connected to those women.

How do you explain the idea the it was about 5 JOURNALIST MEN were sleeping with an indie game dev?
The only time it expanded to any woman other than Quinn was when the journalists were women and when the SJW crowd jumped in.
Fine.

thousands of people donating their own money to a feminist cause to show they aren't against women in gaming is not the same as sending pizza to a police department
I mean is the implication that they still don't want women in gaming even after donating tens of thousands of dollars to get more women involved in gaming?
who actually takes these death threats seriously it seems everyone famous online gets them and i can see just how effective they have been *sarcasm

See it's a tough thing to do when it actually happens.
You can think 'oh who would actually take them seriously i mean come on' until someone online you never met starts posting personal details about you and threatening to harm you or your family.
No matter how level headed you are, you'll take a second guess and take it more seriously. Those are your details, you don't know who this person is, you don't know if they will actually do that. Chances are it's an angry neckbear, but there is still the very real possibility of harm. That's a chance that most absolutely don't want to gamble on by ignoring.
All you have to do is look at the roots of the movement. It all started over a single woman, expanded to multiple women, and only started involving a few men when they were connected to those women.

Why is that? If you can distinguish a troll or harasser from someone worth listening to, why not just listen to them?

I think it's a perfect example of what I mentioned before about two distinct factions within the pro-GG side vying for control of the movement.
Those who disagree with GG do not necessarily deny there are problems with gaming journalism, they're just against using a movement of pure hatred that disproportionately attacks women as a means to fix gaming journalism.
Can you stop shoving gender into this shit? Holy fuck. GG has nothing to do with gender or women or anything like that at any point in time.
Seriously, fuck off with that shit, you are the one perpetuating that bullshit, not everyone else you are so against.

I wouldn't refer to Zoe Quinn's harassment as the root of the movement but instead as a catalyst to the creation of the movement.
I wouldn't refer to Zoe Quinn's harassment as the root of the movement but instead as a catalyst to the creation of the movement.
Indeed, it's moved way past that now. My news feed has been devoid of any mention of Zoe Quinn for about a month.

Actually it did involve some men in the beginning
But that's not what Gamergate is about, it's about the journalists.
[editline]a[/editline]
Like when a lot of journalists claimed that gamers was dead
All you have to do is look at the roots of the movement. It all started over a single woman, expanded to multiple women, and only started involving a few men when they were connected to those women.

I would like to point out, the controversy you're referring to was called five guys
yeah, there was discussion about zoe quinn. mainly because she started accusing people of sexually harassing her for posting anything related to the scandal. But ever since the beginning the main focal point has been and always will be the journalists.
would you mind backing up any of these jingoistic claims about GG being "a movement of pure hatred"

In my opinion, GG isn't a movement based around hatred, but one founded on it. I can guarantee you if the movement hadn't originally started because of, and partially targeted a feminist, one that made an unpopular game among the masses nontheless, it wouldn't have become as big as it is now. Would it have existed at all? Most likely. Would it have blown up like it did? No, not a chance.
