What's with these new cut-down consoles being released only in Europe? Wi-fi-less PSP, GCN-less Wii...
What's next, Xbox 360 with no USB ports? Does the European market favor the absence of major features...?
They look at features like they do dentists "Meh, who needs em'. "

no but companies tend to favor being cheap and exploiting people to make a profit
I never even knew the Wii could play Gamecube games. Now I'm definately not getting the new Wii. There's no need for getting rid of backwards compatibility, I already have one, anyway.
I can understand not getting it because you already have one, but not getting it because they're removing a feature you didn't even know about until reading this thread?
That just seems like splitting hairs to me.
Isn't the Wii just a gussied up Gamecube anyway?

That's why it's so difficult for me to understand how they can cut out GC support. Isn't it really similar hardware?

The architecture of the Wii is simply an advancement of the Gamecube's, most of it is the same but just with more of it clocked at higher speeds. It's not like the PS3 where they redid everything and you need need hardware emulation to run PS2 games - it's like running Windows XP on a newer PC.
It could be cut with the simple removal of the controller and memory card connectors (and the board they're connected to).
My cousin and I play waayyyy too much Sonic Adventure DX/SA2 Battle/Melee/etc. for this to be worth it. This was the exact reason why I didn't get a DSi: I had amassed such a large library of GBA games...
If only Waninkoko could quit screwing around with the PS3 and implement better GameCube compatibility.
I actually play Gamecube games on my Wii more than I play Wii games.
There must be more to this
Why just throw it back out into the market saying that tipping it over is officially supported and you can't play Gamecube games
My guess:
Costs less money and it consumes less time.

I think most people do, actually. There was a lot less shovelware on the Gamecube and the casual gamers who were most likely to buy said shovelware didn't really stick around.

I wouldn't say most. Some could have been Microsoft or Sony fans and just jumped into the Nintendo stream of consoles. But MOST actually buy the Wii shovelware because they are 14 and under.

SUCH AS RESIDENT EVIL 4 WII EDITION AND uh..... NO MORE HEROES and uh.... I give up.
Is there a console this generation that hasn't lost features with each iteration
Man, I don't even know what the Wii-U does.
The Wii-U's discs can hold up to 25 gigs, the graphics card is better than the ps3 and the cpu is more strong. In short it has a lot of potential for fun games.
I still hate the wii.
I bought CoD for it (what was I thinking) and I could NEVER aim on that fucking thing.

Xbox 360.
I sold my Wii, still have my GameCube.
Nintendo is going in a shithole, in my opinion.
But.. what about Pikmin and Smash Bros Melee? And all the Mario Party games? And Dance Dance Mario Revolution? And every other amazing game for the Gamecube?
But.. but.. but..
That looks just like a normal wii, except with the stand removed and tipped over

They've got some good third party support so they need to take that idea and run with it, and get some major third party titles. They still should still market toward the casual and family market as they're a lucrative source of income. I can also see a lot of potential with that control, but they need to show off some really good ideas to sell it.
