shh, maybe if we stay quiet it won't notice us and it'll go away

Nah, the stupidity was mentioning that "the free market will take care of us!" when the free market has absolutely nothing to do with this topic. It was a complete non sequitur.
It's such a sad thing and I know some people are forced to live paycheck to paycheck due to growing up in a bad position, but I guarantee at least half of the people who live paycheck to paycheck just blow all their money on luxuries and never saved anything when they were younger.

Millions of people living paycheck to paycheck are people who were formerly middle class before the financial crisis (when they lost their jobs and their homes). They were forced to drain out their savings over the past 4 or 5 years.
I would be screwed too if my paycheck was late a week. Mostly because my 600€ rent is usually due on the first week of the month and I usually don't have that much left on my account. One month I had 16€ left on my account the day before I got paid.
If you're living paycheck-to-paycheck it shows that either
A) You're not earning much money at all (aka you're poor)
or B) You suck at saving
yea those teachers aren't abusing their students enough fuck the politically correct fascist government!
trying too hard.
also yeah, reduce those fucking restrictions, increase pay.
that's why you have a little bit of extra money in a separate account, for emergencies
Living paycheck to paycheck means not earning enough to save

Are people really not able to grasp this concept

Although i know you're being sarcastic i generally agree with your statement.
Capitalism is an unnecessary evil that only benefits a few rich individuals and fucks over the rest.
I'm not really living paycheck to paycheck because I have a good bit of savings, but my expenses are currently much higher than my income (I do have a job).
If something doesn't change I'll eventually run out of money.

Actually there are a lot of other reasons, to name a few:
1. Medical Bills
2. Recently employed after being laid off/fired
3. Others dependent on you
4. Unforeseen expenses (Car breaks down, need to replace major appliance, pipes burst, etc.)
5. Recently graduated with loan payments
As the first few posts said, you aren't going to die/go broke/homeless immediately if you miss a paycheck; it's just that most don't have cash saved up and are merely using their back accounts as a temporary holding place for what little money they have before they spend it and get a new paycheck.
Rinse and repeat, you miss a paycheck you take a loan or your friends/family support you/your family.

Capitalism won't be around forever.
If I still had my same job but wasnt living in New York City, I'd be so much better off.
a cool thing about this thread is it's full of people that don't realize that people move in and out of poverty

Good thing they're not living on credit.
Oh, wait.
Cable is a luxury.
Not really.
Around here, I think you need cable to watch any TV you want, even national channels, but then again, the national channels here are complete garbage so...
You either have a TV with cable or a console, or you don't need a TV at all.

Cable is a choice and you can live without it.

Yes, you might need cable to watch decent TV, but decent TV is a choice and luxury. Hell, the TV itself is a luxury as you don't physically need it to live or get / keep a decent job.
Internet access and a phone are rapidly becoming mandatory in today's society, though. Many job applications are only open online, discounts at stores are only available online sometimes, workplaces require you to be easily contactable and so on.
I was disputing the fact that the woman in the article claimed that cable, internet and phones are luxuries, when really only the cable and fancy phones are luxuries, but a basic phone and basic internet access are essential.
True though.

Problem is; what's next?
This isn't really news. Everyone I know lives paycheck to paycheck, and it's been that way for some time now.
Problem is; what's next?
the collapse of human society as we know it?
and i'm not saying that because capitalism is great, i'm saying that because capitalistic desires are going to destroy us

I like Capitalism, it's a solid system when done right, but it can't always do everything. Some things need to be done that aren't motivated by profit, and since Companies are extremely unlikely to take it upon themselves to do these things, it falls to the Government to do them instead. Companies think in the now and work to ensure their own future, the Government should work to ensure the country's future and the future of humanity.
I don't even get a paycheck
