I thought aspergers was already on the autism spectrum?
I thought aspergers was already on the autism spectrum?
As someone who was diagnosed with Aspergers myself, I can confirm this. It's on the so-called "high functioning" end of autism, which means there are still some disadvantages but it's not as severe as in other forms of autism. To make it a bit more clear: I'm too normal for some things and I'm too autistic for other things. Usually socializing is pretty hard for me and I rarely go out - I just avoid this stuff because I can tell in advance that it's going to be stressful. On the other hand I succeed on other things and people refer to me as a "human harddrive" (Sounds funny, yeah - I can just read some technical specs and recall them pretty easily) To get back to the topic: It's just a different name. I don't expect any changes.
I guess I better go buy a trenchcoat and a fedora now.
Autism is a very delicate subject but people who self-diagnose themselves with Aspergers because they're socially awkward and have an "unusually high IQ" piss me off to no end, same with people who claim to have OCD because they can't stand images of unsharpened pencils on the internet and stuff like that. Maybe it being called a form of autism now will stop those people. Still waiting for them to accept trypophobia as a "legitimate" phobia because that shit's scary
Well, at least we're finally rid of that name.
Well, at least we're finally rid of that name.
Yeah, now it's just 'Facepunch Syndrome'
As someone who was diagnosed with Asperger's, then summarily changed to non-verbal learning disorder because I had an imagination and wasn't that introverted, this makes things a lot simpler. Kudos to them for simplifying the damn thing. It's actually much better, too, because it used to be that you could be diagnosed with Asperger's but be missing key traits, but have some from another ASD. It became very confusing that people had to make a Venn diagram of Autism, ADHD and Tourette's just to adequately describe what it was. Now I can just have certain symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder, and that's the end of it.
My question as someone without autism at all is why sonic the hedgehog?
I'm the lowest on the autistic spectrum, but I have met other people who have it worse. I just can't think properly from time to time.
'autismpunch' would be less prominent if people took things like these into account

everybody's just a little bit autistic

Affectation? Sympathy? Just because someone has it doesn't make them seem wiser or mysterious in any way, particularly when the person in question announces they have the condition themselves. The name of it doesn't even sound nice. "Aspergers". It doesn't have the same ring to it as Schizophrenia or Bipolar :v:

I'm not sure what's wrong with admitting that your awkward and its a personality fault though.
The British hacker Gary McKinnon is diagnosed with Asperger's and it contributed to a government decision not to extradite him from Britain to the US on cybercrime charges.
Does this mean you can get diagnosed with that and commit crimes without ANY repercussions? Just say you were too retarded to understand what you did? brb gonna start some wars
My guess is that they are trying to justify their weaknesses and saying its because of Aspergers. I'm not sure what's wrong with admitting that your awkward and its a personality fault though.
What I've been wondering the whole goddamn time.
Does this mean you can get diagnosed with that and commit crimes without ANY repercussions? This whole situation seems extremely shady to me, since they just removed the only reason preventing the extraction of Gary McKinnon has just now 'vanished'.
They like blaming their social awkwardness and "lack of gf" in their words with a mental disease instead of facing it
well people don't suddenly become socially awkward and friendless by themselves its not about blaming, it's about understanding why something is
So they add an umbrella term called "Autism Spectrum Disorder" and then change "Gender Identity Disorder" to "Gender Dysphoria" to avoid the stigma of the word "disorder". Does this seem strange to anyone else or is it just me?
Actually it has little to do with the percieved stigma of the word disorder, rather it's due to the fact that it is not considered a disorder any more. That is to say, they don't exactly believe anything is wrong with people diagnosed with Gender Dysphoria other than the fact that their current gender causes them dysphoria (it upsets them/makes them sad.) In short the new name is just a more accurate definition than Gender Identity Disorder because it isn't really a disorder. This latest update to the DSM is part of a larger move to make the DSM more perscriptive over descriptive along with continuing the what was started when homosexuality was no longer considered a mental illness in the DSM v. III (As I recall. I can't be bothered to go unpack my old copy.) As a whole, the v.V of the DSM is a big improvement over the last iteration, just as the last was a big improvement over the third edition.
what retards make the DSM they completely rename gender identity disorder to make it more PC they drop assburgers completely and they havent added sex addiction yet
well at least i don't have to deal with idiots giggling if I try to explain what I have now
Will be replaced with the more widely-known term "Assburgers" instead. As someone who was diagnosed before it was commonly known this is hardly news, it's always been on the spectrum.
Will be replaced with the more widely-known term "Assburgers" instead. As someone who was diagnosed before it was commonly known this is hardly news, it's always been on the spectrum.
My theory is I got diagnosed shortly before it managed to become commonly known My reference is I get diagnosed, I go home and play Halo (the first one), I get on the Internet a couple days later and suddenly it's everywhere
i'm already on the "spectrum". it used to mean "we have no idea how socially retarded you are". now hopefully it'll be a compartmentalized varying spectrum.
Oh boy now instead of being an Aspie I'm autistic. Time to scream like a dying peacock and inspire a bunch of terrible movies.
dude dont ever use the word aspie in reference to those with slight social retardation [editline]3rd December 2012[/editline] it's almost like the complete antithesis. OH HAY A DISORDER THAT MAKES IT HARD TO GET LAID, LETS GIVE IT A CUTESY NICKNAME.

A lot of Savants are autistic, yes, but only a small percentage of autistic people actually are savants. So it's more of an "I'm special" attention whoring. Such people don't really know what the fuck they're talking about. By removal of aspergers it should be easier to remove these self-diagnosing idiots, even though "autistic spectrum" can mean quite a lot of things.
from experience it's everyone around you telling you you're special when you're growing up even though you get held back in elementary school. thing is i called their bullshit.
