30,000 people in the UK still watch TV in black and white
BBC does a really good job, if you consider how much you pay, you get 4 quality channels (ignoring CBBC and news channels and that crap) without any adverts and original shows throughout the day.
Granted some of the shows like Eastenders are crap, but add in Scrubs, South-Park and Mythbusters and I'd never watch a none-BBC channel other than the Music channels.
I also love how they even report negative stories about the BBC on their own news show. The quality of the BBC is amazing compared to shit like Fox.
You get much, much more than 4 channels.
BBC 1, 2, 3 and 4. BBC News. BBC World. BBC Parliament, CBBC, Cbeebies, BBC HD, BBC Alba
BBC Radio 1,1X,2,3,4,5,6,7,A and BBC World
All with constant programming, no adverts. They also cover the worlds largest sporting events, provide a brilliant and free on demand service (iPlayer). They also safehold the worlds largest video record archive.
Sure, they might show stuff you don't like but they have to cater to everyone. The amount of content the BBC pumps into the world, all good quality in their own rights and all no strings attached, is crazy. It's godamn bargain is what it is.
Have you ever sat through a couple hours of American TV? Adverts and all? It's not long before your brain starts dripping out your ears. It's nice to watch TV without the shameless promotion of cooperate interests.
Ah' well.
Your not missing much on British TV anyway, except kids drinking ethanol... oh and Top Gear
I'm not british and I've never been to britain . . . .

Yeah I have, I usually go for a piss break or get something to drink during adverts.
Pretty convenient really.

I'll take commercials over an extra fee any day.
And Doctor Who.
and Blackadder and Red dwarf on dave and uktv gold
I'll take commercials over an extra fee any day.
So you are quite happy for TV companies to waste your time and con you out of content? Ok.
An hour long show with ads is no more than 45 minutes of actual TV show. An hour long show on BBC is an hour of content.
I wonder how many of those are using colour tvs but just felt like saving a bit of money.
But the detector vans can see the colours going through the air

:roflolmao: Is EVERYTHING seriously owned by BBC?

Well, there's also ITV1/2/3, Channel 4, E4. But other than that it's just things like Dave which mostly rerun shows you can get on the iPlayer or the other web players, or DVD.
(And the ones you get in America)
And Q.I.
Black and White is artistic bro.
That is why they had movies in those colors! :science:
:roflolmao: Is EVERYTHING seriously owned by BBC?

The only real channels are the numbered ones, the others have tiny viewing figures.
BBC fucking owns radio though, their stations have 31 million listeners out of 42 million overall.
Wow. What the hell?

You spend £142.50/year on top of your cable bill for your shows to be 15 minutes longer.
I pay $0/year on top of my cable bill to have a period of time where I can take a leak or make a sandwich. Keep in mind, the movie channels and a few others here do not have commercials at all.
on top of your cable bill
We are not America.
Terrestrial TV is free
Freesat and Freeview are free.
I love watching BBC HD on our 50 inch plasma.
You spend £142.50/year on top of your cable bill for your shows to be 15 minutes longer.
what the fuck are you on about seriously?
[sp]the answer to the above question is: you don't know because you don't have a fucking clue[/sp]

I wouldn't mind adverts if they weren't so shit and annoying.
If they were all like the Sony Bravia adverts or the recent Nescafe one I wouldn't mind.
The BBC give much more than 15 extra minutes of entertainment.
Also consider how little £142.50/year actually is compared to the amount you spend on other things per year. People pay approx £108/y on WoW not including other related services. You probably spend around the same amount per year on toilet paper.
£142.50 is nothing if you have a job. Especially if your household has multiple workers.
I still laugh at how you have to have a license to have a TV in your house where everywhere else on the planet you can take one right off the street and never end up being fined $1500 because you don't have a license.
Because Britain is a big, stupid, fascist regime.
We are not America.

What if you want other channels? You still have to pay that fee whether you like the terrestrial stations or not.
What if you want other channels? You still have to pay that fee whether you like the terrestrial stations or not.
Freeview is a one off payment of like £20 (For the decoder box). That gives you something like 65 channels. If you want 500+ you can go ahead and get Satellite/Cable, that'll give you all the extra shit. Infact it's prolly the same channels you get in the US excluding regional stuff.
Do the math. £142 over a year.
Let's say you watch 2 hours of TV per night, 14 hours /week.
The BBC Gives you 210 minutes more content than any other channel in that week. Over the course of a year it works out at 182 HOURS of extra content. For £142? Like I said, bargain.
We don't need cable, our terrestrial telly isn't shite. Our Cable/Satellite telly really is bollox. It's nothing but auction channels, 80's sitcom reruns and gameshow channels.
Wait, you Brits need licenses for a TV? How the fuck do you acquire this license? A test? On how to operate a fucking TV?
What if you want other channels? You still have to pay that fee whether you like the terrestrial stations or not.
Then you fucking pay for other channels. Freeview or Freesat pretty much have you covered though.
Ah' well.

Eastenders :v:
It's an unhealthy addiction :saddowns: But what do you expect me to do? Brush my teeth?
What if you want other channels? You still have to pay that fee whether you like the terrestrial stations or not.
Yeah honestly there might not be as many channels on freeview as there are in Sky or cable tv, but the quality of the channels are much better. On Sky a large portion of the channels either constantly run reruns of old shows or are just crap like auction channels.
Wait, you Brits need licenses for a TV? How the fuck do you acquire this license? A test? On how to operate a fucking TV?
Essentially the license buys you the rights to use a TV decoding device. If it allows you to collect TV realtime, it needs a license.
VCR's, TV's, PC Tuner Cards.... if it can decode BBC signals it needs a license.
I actually completely disagree with how the license is collected. The money is mean entirely for the BBC, however the BBC lack the capability of collecting it. So they have a set of separate companies working together to collect and administrate the license, who I assume all get a fee for their work.
There are Web Design Companies, Ad Agencies, Holding Companies, Logistics folk.. all sorts. I think it is 20 companies all in. They employ inspectors to knock on doors and collect licenses (Who, FYI, get commission based on how much they collect)
They create ads about their "database" and how you can't cheat the system. You can be taken to court for not paying it and fined.
Essentially the BBC use some of the license fee to pay companies to treat you like a criminal, even if you pay. That should stop. OR there should be a way to 'opt out' of BBC channels. Don't pay license fee, don't get BBC.
That all said, it's worth the money. The BBC do good work with the money, they just go about getting it all wrong.
The license fee should just be absorbed into tax, if you ask me.
The license fee should just be absorbed into tax, if you ask me.
That would never work.
But the detector vans can see the colours going through the air
Oh I forgot about those pesky detector vans :v:
