If it's actually a Prothean Beacon, then I would hate for my grandchildren to deal with the incoming Reaper threat and a multi-color ending to their existence.
Doom 4:Monolith
Based on a true story.
Don't worry guys, it's just a The Rock. They naturally form, well, everywhere.

As much as I'd LOVE for it to be something, I know it probably isn't. Remember the famous Martian face which turned out to be nothing more than a mountain?
It's a Prothean beacon. It all makes sense. It's just like in Mass Effect. First you spot it like this, then in like 20 years astronauts walk on Mars and find it and analyze it and then after that we start developing technology and eventually, we discover Charon is a Mass Relay.
I'm surprised that there is no Giorgio Tsoukalos image posted yet.
whats with all the autistic mass effect references in this thread??? have none of you seen 2001 a space odyssey?

this is way different.
It's a low lying rock with an exaggerated shadow, nothing to see here.
Even if it's a low lying rock, it's still unusually shaped. Also, it stands out from the surrounding area.

I'm afraid we can't do that Dave.
Came into this thread expecting Space Odyssey references.
Guess the saying that almost every FPer is 12 has some truth to it.
When your resolution is too low to fully resolve an object, it tends to look rectangular because the pixels in the image are squares.
If you've been around computers for more than a day you can tell that this doesn't apply to the image shown at all.
I really hope that it is something, but ehh sadly it is probably a rock :/
Strange how they aren't saying where it is on the planet.

... post 15?
If this thing is real, send a goddamn recon bot, or at least deploy a satellite in orbit to observe it. Maybe throw in a fuckton of special sensors to detect whatever's causing the "Curse of Mars".
Don't get so excited guys. This picture is old. Saw it some years ago. It's just a rock.
Here's some article from 2009 about it.

I was expecting a ukulele.
Just as I've watched 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time 2 hours ago.
Holy hell it's an almost direct allusion to 2001: A Space Odyssey! I place bets that the monolith follows the size ratio of 1:4:9 and we must now make a mission to Saturn.
Unfortunately, it's on Mars and not the Moon.
It means they didn't finish their job of influencing the life on mars. On earth it left when it gave intelligence
There was one on the Earth too, the one on Mars is level 2.
