• Data security expert: Sony knew it was using obsolete software months in advance

The blame lies squarely with sony for one reason. When you are in a legal agreement, a contract (or a subscription), with your customers, there are many factors that come into play. There's something that, at least in Canadian law, is referred to as a Duty of Care. A Duty of Care means that reasonable and prudent measures need to be taken to ensure that nothing happens to the customer as a result of your negligence, and that any personal information - ESPECIALLY payment information entrusted to you by the customer - does not fall into the wrong hands. Sony failed dismally in that regard. I do feel sorry for the people who are sure to be made to take the blame for this, but they really should have exercised basic caution.
It's saddening how all of this comes to light only after such a major breach in security occurs.
The blame does not fall on the hackers. It falls on Sony for not letting their customers own their own electronics.
