Well, yeah, I wouldn't suggest it for a state like California, but in the Midwest there's hardly any ground movement, and I'm sure something can be successfully engineered. The real question is cost, and is it really worth it?
It is both easier and cheaper to not dig it down. Why dig it down when you can do it much more easily above ground :v:
If the state build it on land it already owns (what's proposed in the PDF is on pillars next to highways). Land costs can be kept to a minimum.
I wonder if this system could be built underground, linking cities a larger distance apart. That would probably jack up the price, but it would eliminate the land usage issue. Anyone want to take a dwarfy underground fun ride from Chicago to New York at 800mph?
Part of it will be, it will tunnel through areas that are too steep. It's simply cheaper to have it above ground. Since the pylons are just as disruptive to the land as a telephone pole (a.k.a very little), and the loop will try to stick near existing roadways, land usage isn't really an issue.
If we're lucky the liberal fruitcakes will go for this instead of the High Speed Rail that they've pushed through the anus of CA I mean, High speed rails are cool and shit, but its too fucking expensive. Not only is this solution even fucking cooler but a fraction of the cost.
How many can each ride carry? The picture in the OP shows 6 seats, surely it must have more if it's going to effectively compete against other collective transportation methods. [editline]13th August 2013[/editline] Though I do hope they'll someday get funding for this, because not only does the concept sound awesome. The actual look of it is really good, very futuristic. A lot more pleasing to the eye than your everyday train.
There might be just many rides.
True, but when compared to, lets say a jumbo jet (I use this as the comparison due to the speeds). One Jumbo Jet (Boeing 747) can carry like 550 passengers at max. That'd be like what, 91-92 separate capsules. I googled a bit on the prices, and it turned out to be pretty much the same. A Boeing 747 goes for $20 million. Whereas 91 Hyperloop capsule's would go for aprox $22. Then again, a Hyperloop would go almost 200 mp/h faster than a Jumbo Jet. That alone makes me think that many people would prefer taking a Hyperloop than an airplane.
A 747 isn't cheap to fly either
Exactly, I really hope this thing gets funding. If a country had a fully fledged network of Hyperloop's, emissions would lower significantly.
each capsule carries 28 people
This would be fantastic to get from Atlanta, Ga to New York, NY or LA. I hope this happens, it would be such a convenience.
This sounds fantastic. Hope a project based on this will see the light of day in my lifetime.

And that's damn cool. However the real question is this: If this gets funding and is made, will it's nickname be "The Hyper" or "The Loop"?

Saying "I'll just catch a ride on the loop" sounds far better than "I'll just catch a ride on the hyper"
Probably "The Loop". Saying "I'll just catch a ride on the loop" sounds far better than "I'll just catch a ride on the hyper"
Or you know, The Hyperloop :v:
Or you know, The Hyperloop :v:
Longer then 5 letters, won't get used I'd imagine it might just become the tube. Already in use and kinda fitting
This is so fucking weird for me because I remember imagining something fairly similar back in middle school. I mean, there was no math involved whatsoever, but I thought it'd be cool if we had something like this, and now it's actually happening. Back then I just thought it would break people's necks, so I stopped thinking about it. I really, really want to see this completed.
Probably "The Loop". Saying "I'll just catch a ride on the loop" sounds far better than "I'll just catch a ride on the hyper"
might depend on where you are though, in Chicago we already refer to the center of town as 'the loop' because all of the el trains converge in the area and circle around on a set of tracks, like a giant noisy roundabout it'd likely be referred to in full as 'the hyperloop' for a while after one gets built because who wouldn't want everyone to know that they got to ride this insanely awesome new thing over time people would naturally lean into a shortened name like the hype or the loop or whatever, we don't need to decide on it right now
All aboard the hype train! Really though I'm surprised how simple this seems after reading it, and the air capture/flow system on the capsule is brilliant.
Hopefully the price tag is accurate enough that it won't end up being a project that just sucks up money
It's interesting but it's not as practical as the high-speed rail that's in development. Though if there were both, it would be great however budget issues and the high speed rail is over budget (which you would have guess if you looked at the early documents and noticed the missing and/or over optimistic costs).
