Science can't explain how everything began (was there something before the Big Bang?) any more than religion can, and so people go to religion for what they consider an agreeable answer. It doesn't make them irrational or stupid. It really doesn't. And to make it clear, as far as I'm concerned, humanity doesn't have any purpose. We're just an anomaly created by astronomical odds. There was no God influencing it, and no divine purpose for our existence. We just are, and then we aren't. That idea doesn't satisfy people, because everyone wants a meaning.

Canada and South Africa also have same-sex marriage and Australia, Brazil, and several of the other large South American countries have civil unions. The US is quite outstanding in not having either.
