Having it in the hand is nasty. I had to have a drip in once, and the nurse managed to miss the vein twice. It bruised badly.
A needle in the arm is barely noticeable to me, however. It seems to help when I'm distracted.
This happened to my sister too except they gave up and then also wrecked her other hand also. Five times in one hand then a few times in the other. Nurses always struggle to locate my sister's veins it's happened several times. I'm glad I've never had to have a cannula myself (think it's a cannula?)
When I get a blood test I watch them put the needle in
It's really not a big deal
I think this is completely dependent on the type of fear they experience. If i remember right there are multiple types, as in my case mine is the procedure itself. Dentist, doctors, drawing blood.. tell me I need to do it and I'm gonna start rubbing my arms or feeling very very anxious and uneasy. It's not the pain, it's not the needle itself.. it's just everything as a whole. For me, looking or not looking doesn't help since I'm freaking out 10 minutes beforehand.
I once told the nurse I get nervous when my bloods drawn, just so she'd know and hopefully could do it smooth. Another doctor overheard me and said "It doesn't hurt man! Look *grabs vial* I'll draw my own blood right now!" (I'm 21 and in the military so it was a bit of a shock that he'd go that far to help)
Needles are the sword of the devil. Wasps and bees compose his army, with which he will one day rise up on man and go on a massive pricking spree.
I'm not afraid of needles, but what bothers me most about them isn't the pain, just the annoying prick they make, especially if it's in the mouth (dentist). I'd take a punch to the face over a needle any day.
Yes. The mind is powerful. Also, looking at an area in pain or touching it (like a fresh bruise, cut, or scrape) helps you to deal with the pain. Seeing it or feeling the area helps your mind come to terms with it and it's able to work past it.
Watching them prick a needle in my arm is nothing.
Getting your bloodsugar checked is something else, fucking hurts when they stab my ring finger with a pin to squeeze out a few drops.

Do i sense a homophobic undertone
It's a good thing I don't have eyes on the back of my head, or a spinal tap could be much worse.
I hate injections in the stomach, because they sting like a bitch.
Shots in the arm aren't too bad, but I agree a lot of it is in the mind. If you don't think it's gonna hurt much, it won't.
Dead space 2 ruined needles for me
I'm afraid the docter is gonna accidently fling the needle into my eye :v:
wait...
Which ones expected the q-tip to be worse?
it reminds me of when i gave blood and i watched that giant ass needle go into my arm
To all the guys saying "no shit:"
Science often studies things laymen consider obvious for multiple reasons:
A. 'Common sense' is often wrong, and it may not be the case.
B. A greater understanding of something we know to be true is beneficial.
C. That greater understanding can be applied to other, new phenomena in the future.
The more we understand basic things, the easier it will be to understand complex things.
Simply because we know something to be the case does not mean we shouldn't ask "why?" That is what this study aims to do: understand why.
My mom recently got a huge shot into her elbow, Yes her fucking elbow and they had to stab around it with a thick as fuck syringe. It left a lump the size of half a tennis ball on it.
I was in the hospital around now(give or take a few days) last year. I can remember that fucking nurse taking blood samples every 6 hours for 4 days and they had a serious habit of constantly hitting nerves, one time they got me in a really bad place around midnight. I screamed so loud from the pain when i woke up(i was asleep at the time) and woke up the entire wing of the hospital i was in.
I had to get an allergy test once, and for those who don't know, the doctor sticks like 20 needles into your arm filled with things that you're probably allergic to.
I nearly passed out.
But that's NOTHING compared to getting your teeth drilled by the dentist. "Oh, it's just a small cavity, no need for anesthetics." WELL FUCK THAT I'M OUT. (As it turns out, yes, there was need for anesthetics, and no, it did NOT feel good)

Yeah I like to pretend I'm tough as bricks, but when I had my wisdom teeth taken out I demanded the hardest drugs they had.
Admittedly, that was partially because I wanted to get ridiculously stoned without getting in trouble for it. But also because I don't like the sound of my own teeth snapping off of my jaw.
I remember when i was in the hospital when i was 10. They kept missing the I.V spot because my vein kept contracting and they pretty much left a huge hole in the top of my hand. I still have a scar.
Duh, does anyone have the image demonstration of someone seeing a replica hand get cut when it's in a position where it looks like theirs and they feel pain? (awful explanation but someone should recognize it)
Needles have never bothered me, and I always make sure to look at them when they go in -- lets me brace myself for any possible discomfort.
It really fucking sucks when the nurse sticks the needle in the wrong place. Painful as shit.
I'm still anxious around needles, but once you've had one in your mouth, ones on the arm aren't that bad. Still hate them though.
I was calm as hell when I got injected in my mouth twice in my life but for some weird reason getting injected in the arm makes me very nervous
So once again, somebody's paid good money for someone else to reprove that all your senses play a role in how other senses detect things.
Why did they have to do a test to know this?
I can get piercings without flinching but a tiny little needle trying to steal my blood can fuck right off
I remember crying when I got my first injection.
Yeah, go ahead with the rainbows, I BET ALL OF YOU CRIED.
I know I cried when I got my first ever injection
Because I was a literal baby.
i laugh at all your guys' pain
When I get a blood sample done I never look at what's happening and hardly feel a thing, while the first time I got one done it hurt like hell.
