I hate this new age idea that technology should be accessible to even the dumbest of idiots. It dumbs tech down and makes it harder for innovation.
The easiest way out surely would be to just make your software or technology "dumb", but that is not required for everyone to use it. Besides, there's always going to be an idiot who's even more stupid than you can imagine. Always.
Has it ever occurred to you that not everyone wants or needs something "powerful", "expansive" and "customizable"?
Then they can go buy an iPhone with an interface designed by Fischer-Price instead of criticizing us for their own ignorance.
My 82 year old grandmother, who can barely use a computer, can use an android phone just fine. How fucking illiterate do you have to be?
I asked my mother for an Android for my birthday, she gave me an iPhone and said I wouldn't know how to use an Android. :smith:
When I read that I got the urge to rip the head of an infant.
Then they can go buy an iPhone with an interface designed by Fischer-Price instead of criticizing us for their own ignorance.
Don't give Apple any ideas now.
You're confusing "average person" with someone like yourself who knows who to use the phone to its full potential, who knows how to expand its capabilities, and who knows how to customize it to their liking.
The average person can't go onto the market and search for "home screen replacement"? The most complicated thing I have done to my phone is root and flash a new ROM, which wasn't entirely neccisary to be honest, just a nice thing to have done.
When I read that I got the urge to rip the head of an infant.
This would help him how?
I hate this new age idea that technology should be accessible to even the dumbest of idiots. [editline]19th October 2011[/editline]
How can you be sure the average person knows it's called the homescreen?
The manual. Or even the tutorial when you start your phone up for the first time? (I'm not entirely sure if the tutorial mentions it, though) [editline]19th October 2011[/editline] To be honest I can just stuff "iOS" or "WP7" into search and get a homescreen replacement pretty easily.
To be fair the average person isn't that smart when it comes to technology. I see people struggling to do the basic things with iOS, Andriod, WebOS, etc too. With android being so open and OEMs just doing what ever the fuck they please it draws this complication from a lack of consistency. Note that he says "Average person" not "tech savvy people" like the people above my post. Of course it's exaggerated but what do you expect from a CEO of any company?
As long as the average nut finds the Android Market button and then the facebook app, I don't think anyone cares.
Alright, but now you're assuming the average person actually wants to and is comfortable with changing core functionality on a whim.
My parents can't figure out how to use my android. My dad has an iphone 4. I think that's a good thing though.
Alright, but now you're assuming the average person actually wants to and is comfortable with changing core functionality on a whim.
That's like saying that you are assuming that the average PC user always wants to and is comfortable to swap his/her graphics card. Should the IBM PC model not be modular just because the average user doesn't need it? I consider everything that makes Android brilliant is a plus. It works brilliantly for the average user even without using those features (so long as they picked a good device) [editline]19th October 2011[/editline] And if the average vegtable can't press home, an app icon and the back key. They are not worth having as customers.
Alright, but now you're assuming the average person actually wants to and is comfortable with changing core functionality on a whim.
Since the average PC user won't flash different BIOS's, we shouldn't give keep the ability. Since the average PC user won't use Linux, we shouldn't have it. Is that what you're saying?

Panda X hit the nail on the head - we're all technologically adept here. We can make use of all the features, but the other devices, as far as I've seen, make it incredibly easy to just turn on and go. My WP7 for example, turn on, activate, enter setup information, go. Even I'm a little scared of sitting and setting up an Android phone for optimal use. I know it's not hard, I've done it before, but I don't want to sift through all the homescreen replacements and figure out which one is the best for me, where I want my mail widget, etc. [editline]19th October 2011[/editline]
Since the average PC user won't flash different BIOS's, we shouldn't give keep the ability. I think he sets the bar for 'computer scientist' a little low :I

And uh, you can't decide where you want your mail widget? :v:

I'll probably get an Android for my next phone in two years, I just wanted WP7 as a decent starter. Besides, waiting to jump on to an evolving platform will make your first experience amazing.

If you don't know about overclocking and ROM flashing, among other things, noone is forcing you to use those features. In fact, I doubt you'd notice them if you didn't know they were available.
WP7 does look like a good choice, I especialy love the UI.
As someone who works a desk job let me tell you it's integration with email accounts and facebook is just astounding Pretty sure Android can do the same but I absolutely love it in WP7
Just this moment I'm installing a custom rom, and it's not complicated at all. I don't get people saying Android is too complicated, really.
Then what's your problem with it? If you don't know about overclocking and ROM flashing, among other things, noone is forcing you to use those features. The average person doesn't know about or give a shit about either or, so while it may be of benefit to us techno-savvy people, the feature being there doesn't necessarily make the platform better.
That's exactly my point? If those features weren't available, I would have stayed with a simple flip-phone.
As someone who works a desk job let me tell you it's integration with email accounts and facebook is just astounding Pretty sure Android can do the same but I absolutely love it in WP7
Since I got my Android phone I've pretty much switched to Gmail which works really well. Facebook on the other hand is a pile of horse shit on Android. The notification for event x comes into Android. So you open the Facebook app up via the notification to find the app sitting talking with the server to get a list of notifications that it should already have since it just bothered me with one!

It's all about looks.
Android can be pretty confusing for people who haven't used a smartphone before, I've seen this first hand. He's got a fair point. But a key point brought up in the Android 4.0 presentation was the ease of use of it. Press what you want, swipe to get rid.

If you don't know how to operate it and don't WANT to learn how (which is what this obviously implies), then buy a goddamn nokia 1100. [editline]19th October 2011[/editline] Oh and this also implies "our software is easy for non-geeks to use" and that's like saying a camera is better because it has a full auto mode.
