Shame.

Hopefully he passed his ideals on to many more people

Better start looking for that address before Raul croaks, too.
Speaking of Raul, who's next after him? He's pretty old as well.
Asshole? Yes, no denying that.
But he was one hell of a suave commie asshole.
Even asshole, in some ways, is a harsh charge. Cuba had for a long time before been fucked hard again and again by foreign imperial powers
Shame.

Hopefully his ass backwards laws and insufferable ruling go with him to hell
What if all this was a CIA plan and it finally worked
Plan #601: Kill him with lots of time.
Plan #601: Kill him with lots of time.
They had to lift the embargo so they could ship large amounts of time down there under the radar.
As much as a big part of history has just left us I won't shed any tears for him.
did not see that coming
rest in peace
"These corrupt governments are doing everything wrong. You see, only my corrupt government can save our people"
Arguably less so, and conditions measurably improved. We typically judge historical figures for the progress they make, not for their perfection. Otherwise pretty much all of the founding fathers of the USA would be considered disgusting people except for perhaps thomas paine, along with many other loved historical figures like FDR, churchill, lincoln (im being so anglocentric rip.)
did not see that coming

his health has been pretty poor for awhile now IIRC, so it's not quite out of nowhere
"These corrupt governments are doing everything wrong. You see, only my corrupt government can save our people"
Castro had the right idea to give Cuba's government the boot, but he just kept it fucked with the government that came after it, plus the massively long US embargo crippled them even more.
As a rallying cry for frustrated Cubans, he was really the man for the job. As someone in charge of a government, he was not. That's part of the reason why Che Guevara isn't as vilified as Fidel, he wasn't a massive part of the Cuban government for long enough to be properly associated with its arguably damaging policies.
I know literally nothing about him other than name.
I feel like I'm very ignorant here. Didn't he hate America or something?

I think he used to admire them, during his young
Case in point, before the revolution, he was an avid baseball player, and some american clubs actually considered hiring him, IIRC

Cuba and America have pretty much always been in a very antagonistic relationship, since before Castro even.
There might have been opportunity for the US and Cuba to get along post-revolution but you know, red scare, and Cuba had gotten cozy with the USSR (USSR gave financial aid) who wanted to put nukes in Cuba to intimidate the USA since the USA had already put nukes in Turkey to do the same. Obama has tried to open relations again, but it seems pretty likely that our relations will go cold again with Trump and the Republicans.
Our family had our property and business confiscated after the revolution. One of them was imprisoned, and died in jail.
Goodbye, fucker.
No fuckin way.
2016 has been one hell of a ride.
All things considered 2016 is only the tipping point, the farther we get the more recognizable names we'll begin to see die
It's always been like that, but 5 or 10 years ago i'd imagine names weren't quite as iconic given the rise of technology and social media (obviously they were still large and significant, but they were more far and between and usually not from old age)
I see time has succeeded where the CIA did not.
for some reason i thought castro would outlive me, not because i would die young but he would somehow live forever
for some reason i thought castro would outlive me, not because i would die young but he would somehow live forever
Nah, it's the british queen you have to worry about
I'm honestly surprised he didn't live to at least a hundred
I understand the things he did, but I can't help but feel a little sad. He may have been a bad man, but he shaped an image of a generation, everyone knows the Castro look, his assassination attempts, and his general revolutionary spirit. We're coming to the close of an Era, I only hope this next one is better.

they both liberating peasants in heaven now
r.i.p my real brothas
I always thought his beard was a source of immortality.

The face of multiple generations. We're lucky his ideas have spread to so many people. This is the last we'll see of his face, but we'll feel the effects of his actions for decades to come.
Ah, yes, he influenced some good people like Hugo Chavez and his successor Maduro in Venezuela, among other Latin American bolivarian socialists. Long live his great democratic legacy.
I too think Lenin and Stalin left a great ideology to our world that unfortunately our capitalist western society still didn't fully grasp and am thankful that such a great person as Fidel Castro was able to propagate it to us.
Yeah, Pinochet, the juntas of guatamela, brazil, uruguay, etc. (lol millions of dead peasants from US fuckery is great,) Jimenez, Batista, the Duvaliers, etc. are all standup leaders who nobly stood up to people like Castro and Allende.
Good riddance
Honestly, yeah he was an icon and a symbol of Cuba itself but the man was a massive tyrant and a murderer. I will not miss him.
I remember my dad telling me how Castro's thugs took his pet dog and killed it by dragging it along the road while it was attached to a truck by a chain. That's before they got their hands on my grandmother.
Fuck this cunt, may he rot in the blackest pits of Hell. and fuck his "revolutionary" ideals.
have to say i'm not sure how to feel. he was a terrible leader for sure, but i kinda grew an admiration for him down the road with the way he handled relations with other countries and became an advocate for peace and generally trying to help un-fuck his country.
And somehow from US influence the south american countries didn't end up great poor countries like Cuba.
In Brazil at least, even though our military government wasn't the best we could've had, we turned out way better than we would have under communist leaders.
Shame Venezuela is not able to stand up to their Socialist dictators to this day. But hey, maybe one day they will realize how great their ideology really is and they will submit and ascend as a great world potency.
You say that as unemployment is double in brazil. Brazil has way worse crime problems, such as 5 times the homicide rate, has greatly inferior education, a shorter life expectancy, more than three times the deaths per 1000 births.
It's not rosy in Cuba, but you can't really say that you turned out way better lol.

It's really sad that FDR died so early, it was really looking like the US could have had at least cordial relations with the USSR and later on countries like Cuba and China had he not died so early and hadn't been give Truman as a VP.
