Racism didn't get big until the slave trade started and the idea that White Europeans were superior started getting into peoples heads.

The Spanish and the Moors and the Romans and the Egyptians were not far from each other technologically, or on a societal level. There was still something that kept the other from being completely alien. That can hardly compare to European ships landing in a land where people hardly wore clothing except for ceremonial or rank-based reasons and lived in homes made from animal skin or straw woven around branches.
