According to the 1934 NFA and subsequent modifications you can own a rifle/pistol/shotgun but all other firearms, especially automatics are highly restricted. In order for it to be a rifle it must have a minimum barrel length (I think 18 inches, correct me if I am wrong). They can't sell MAC 10s with the short barrel because that is considered a short barreled rifle, so they lose the stock and call it a pistol.
Therefore in legal terms, yes, that is considered a handgun.
They also have short barreled AKs and M16s that they sell as handguns without the stocks. That loophole has resulted in some of the weirdest and most impractical firearms to ever hit the market.
