Bloods and Crips uniting in Baltimore to help rebuild the community.

how are two groups known for absolutely terrorizing their community going to help rebuild it?
How about they drop the fucking colors and start really helping people, stop the drugs, the guns, the violence.
They scare kids into joining their shit instead of maybe going on to college and making a real difference. Does that help anything?

You should read the rest of the thread, or do some research as to why gangs form and what life is like in those areas.

Gangs feed their own cause with their own actions.
Oh, only two rival gangs can kill each other, but when the police become involved that's a big no no. Bunch of hypocrites.
I feel like you don't understand the conditions under which gangs/organized crime forms. Gangs don't form in neighborhoods where people feel like the police are on their side and can call 911 without worrying who the cops will shoot when they show up. Gangs/organized crime form in areas where the official law enforcement doesn't make people feel safe anymore. You join a gang because you don't want to get jumped on the way home from school. If there was an effective police presence, you wouldn't feel in danger of that and you wouldn't join a gang. Now, this is how it begins. Once it forms, without any meaningful oversight it basically evolves into a money/power grab because of the people involved and the aforementioned lack of oversight.
Edit: The post I'm replying to asks "why?". If you wanna rate me dumb and provide a better explanation then please you're welcome to do so.
what you said isn't incorrect, however your wording implies that this situation is the only thing, or the primary thing that motivates people to join gangs. a fair majority of the members of these gangs join as a means of making a living because they're incapable or unwilling to live inside the system. had you been only referring to Crips and Bloods then I guess what you said would be a bit more accurate but you included "organized crime" which is a term that basically means crime planned and executed for the purpose of making money.
Imo they're probably doing this so that they're respected in the region and as a result more people join them.
Or so it covers the tracks of the ilegal shit they try to pull meanwhile.

Sad thing is you are 100% right.
In fact, drug kingpins that have hold over major parts of cities/ghettos tend to be the "peacekeepers" more so than the police.
A really big thing with Police/FBI is being friendly and on good terms with those high up members in control? Wanna know why? Because deals like this happen.
"Listen, we know who you are, we know you sell drugs all over and are in control of this area. You make sure you, and the people that follow keep your necks clean and keep your trouble off our streets and we wont have to come up here and have problems with you"
And what do you know? The drug lords take those deals, get their people in check, and act as the law enforcement. Less bullshit happening in the community and public=less police snooping around. They do this because it lets them continue being drug lords and making good money while people dont go to jail because they arent doing stupid petty crimes in the street no more.
This is why people join up with those leaders, like you said, its protection.
what an absolute fucking shitshow, this entire thing
Uh. I guess hell froze in Baltimore this day.
Thats... not how criminal enterprises work. Sorry. You're not really "gangsters" you're really community organizers. If you're still shooting people, you're terrorists/freedom fighters. Are these people actual Crips or Bloods?
Theres more to it than this, but definitely a part to it. Gangs act like a neighborhood police. They know everything and anything that goes on and dishes out their own punishments.
Gangs have evolved so much over time that its hard to track.
If there's more to it please explain. I'm not disagreeing with you at all in fact I agree with you completely, but don't say there's more to it and then not say what exactly that is. It's pointless.
You're an officer of the law right? Shed some light on the subject, tell us what you've experienced as far as the other side of the situation goes.
I just love how "peace" has been negotiated by an Islamic group.
This can only go well.

You can't run a criminal organization if your neighborhood is in ruins and your clients have no cash. Normalcy is in their best interest, all the riots and massively increased media and police presence just make running criminal operations unfeasible.
So you join with the jump-ees? Yeah that's not a good excuse, sorry. "I don't wanna get jumped so I instead jump other people!"
It's a perfectly good reason to join a gang. There's strength in numbers, and if my options were "get the shit kicked out of me on the way home every day" or "kick the shit out of someone else every day" I'd most definitely choose the latter.

Except you're now taking orders from some uneducated shithead with a gun who has a very messed up world view and will kill dudes in either red or blue shirts because some other shithead has told him to.
Gangs are not the solution to community problems, idk what the hell happened in this thread but when actual groups come in to try to help 9 times out of 10, the gangs see this as a threat and lash out. Plenty of charitable schools and organizations are vandalized by gangs and they only exist to perpetuate a life of violence
So how long do you think the truce will hold?
Ever since Biggie and 2pac got shot the bloods and the Crips have not been fighting as much. There have been a few truces since. This is mostly because a lot of beefs died down right after they got shot. If you listen to albums from either side a year before and a year after the event you'll hear that the shit talking about the other side is way less.
I'm a Blood, which Crip are you?

I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying it's what goes through people's heads.
