Nearly every reason I have ever been given for keeping marijuana illegal would either be fixed by legalizing it, or alternatives would be given after legalizing it that would severely limit the detrimental effects in the first place
oh yeah I forgot to mention you can watch the hearing here if you want: http://www.judiciary.senate.gov/hearings/hearing.cfm?id=094c28995d1f5bc4fe11d832f90218f9
This chick behind Kevin Sabet keeps nodding her head like crazy whenever he says how marijuana shouldn't be legal and I watch to slap them both

Cognitive neuroscientist in training here. Nope, that's bullshit.
Because it's a hallucinogenic drug.
What. I have never hallucinated when high from marijuana.
So what was this about marijuana gummy bears. I don't even.

Oh but wait, alcohol can do it!

Stream's just showing a title card right now. Are they on break, or has it not started?
if they do legalize it though, its probably going to have limits like alcohol and tobacco where it's still going to be illegal to possess it if you are a minor and it'll be illegal to purchase for a minor...ect ect,
its not going to be ever legal for highschoolers to smoke pot and i bet the penalties for getting caught with it will still be severe, although not nearly as draconian as they are today. it'll probably be classified like alcohol and require the purchaser to be 21 and older.
Just legalize pot already. The only people who still care enough about it to get all riled up are folks too mired in belligerence and ignorance to ever give ground on their stance.
OR maybe it's because some people (myself included) have had family and friends die where marijuana was involved. Six years ago, my uncle was killed in a head on collision and the person who hit him was stoned out of his ever living fucking mind, so much so that he thought he had parked his car and not hit anyone. If people want to kill themselves, get a gun, a rope, a razor, stock up on pills
stock up on beer, but no, people want to kill others while they drive and do whatever.
Stream's just showing a title card right now. Are they on break, or has it not started?
gotta skip forward in time, apparently it doesn't work like all other live-streams where they send you to a....live stream.....

so you think making it illegal would cause less deaths in this situation
nope
Stream's just showing a title card right now. Are they on break, or has it not started?
It just ended. One of the last things they talked about was "marijuana infused gummy bears" and the likelihood of marketing towards kids or something.
[editline]banana[/editline]
Also, yeah, apparently you can rewind/fast forward the "live stream" to start it over or whatever if you want to watch it or skip around to the main points.
op stream just died for me

Well, good. Pot's pretty darn harmless, but it still needs to be used responsibly. I'm sure younger folk will still get a hold of it if they really want to, like they do with cigarettes and alcohol, but recreational drug use is still something that we should treat with some care and tact. I don't think it's unreasonable at all to place similar restrictions on it that we do with alcohol and tobacco.
It actually ended shortly after I posted it so it was very awkward timing for me to post it, I thought it was going to go on for another hour. My bad. Basically the 3 people they talked to were very supportive of legalization, but Kevin Sabet was just going off on how they were putting weed in gummy bears and selling it to kids and other ridiculous crap
so you think making it illegal would cause less deaths in this situation
nope
You're right, it wouldn't but it sure as shit would make it harder to get. People would have to continue what they do now, run it across country, and employers know if you've done it or not.
back up, wow the senator questioning the guy is actually....smart?!
You're right, it wouldn't but it sure as shit would make it harder to get. People would have to continue what they do now, run it across country, and employers know if you've done it or not.
no?
weed is illegal. I can buy weed from 12 people right now, that I know of. More are available I'm sure.
What are you going to do? Make it doubly illegal?
Have you EVER heard about prohibition? No? I didn't think so.
[editline]10th September 2013[/editline]
alcohol is legal but people still drive drunk illegally. if you think making it illegal would make people stop activities like that, you're just factually wrong and you're doing nothing to help the actual problem that the drug war brings up.

Marijuana is legal for medical in Canada, of course you can buy it.
Marijuana is legal for medical in Canada, of course you can buy it.
I'm not even talking for medical. I smoke recreationally without a green card.
and doesn't it being legal in someway, also legalized in washington and colorado and soon Maine, tell you that you're wrong?

One thing that was talked about in the stream was how police now have access to a tool that can detect THC in the bloodstream, driving high is going to be treated the same way as driving drunk currently is, if you get pulled over they can pull out a device and measure the THC content in your blood, if it's over .5 nanograms (I believe?) you will be charged with a DUI. If anything, legalization will make it LESS likely for people to be driving high.

ya, its up to those that can use it to be very responsible about it, and not just be stupid. don't buy pot-brownies if you have little kids, because they are way more likely to eat a brownie than pull out a bong and smoke, if you're going to get high, you should lock your keys away. And if you are going to own pot in your house, you should be aware that it should be locked away responsibly not just left out in the open. In a perfect world people would be like this but our world sucks and people will do increadibly stupid things. this is true for guns, tobacco, alcohol, and pharmacuticals.

This story rings suspect, but okay, benefit of the doubt: I'm still not seeing why marijuana itself should be be illegal instead of driving under the influence of it? Drunk driving is illegal, but drinking isn't. Pot is harmless when used responsibly.

I remember reading about problems with that, like .5 nanograms being an amount that will still be present in your system days after being high
I remember reading about problems with that, like .5 nanograms being an amount that will still be present in your system days after being high
Hmm. That part I was not aware of, I didn't hear it brought up in the meeting. If that's the case then that could be a problem.

thank god if they do, my brother's medicine makes his eyes go bloodshot when he's tired for some reason and idk how many times we've been stopped by cops because of that, he's had his car searched like a dozen times because of it too.
[editline]10th September 2013[/editline]
no his medicine is not pot

Drinking should be illegal because it leads to poisoning, driving and what ever else. When something is abused the hell out of, everyone looses it. Alcohol has been abused the fuck out of for centuries, the result, everyone should loose it.

No? Didn't think so.
Go look it up and stop being dumb and historically and factually ignorant as all hell.

Because banning alcohol has worked so well historically.
