But he didn't though. He didn't defend the guy's views at all, and in fact even said he doesn't even agree with them. He stuck up for the guy because it was an invasion of privacy.
Kinversulath didn't say Olin was defending Sterling's views, but merely expressing an unpopular opinion about them.
nvm
Have a work account and a private account. Dont talk politics or religion or social issues on your work account. I agree with the guy, too, but this was bad form for a community manager whose follower base presumably consisted of Turtle Rock fans and people in the industry.
You could definitely call Sterling a victim in the context he established in the first tweet. Growing up in an era where segregation was still a fight definitely warped his perceptions of black people and it wasn't his concious decision to be born into an environment that was incredibly hostile towards blacks. His actions are deplorable, and I hope that he reevaluates his opinions, but sometimes things that have been indoctrinated into you from a young age really stick with you and can require big events to force a change in perspective. I just hope this is it Plus there's also the fact that Sterling is being punished so incredibly harshly for something he said in the privacy of his own home that was recorded and released without (I assume) his knowledge. That alone really doesn't sit well with me
And let's be honest, being raised in that era SURELY affected his mentality, combine it with money and you've got an old rich racist.
If that argument meant anything we wouldn't ever get anywhere.
Yeah I agree and it's still true today in many ways. Right now there's a huge ideological outburst about equality of all kinds, and how everyone should be allowed to express almost innumerable personality 'beliefs', no matter how unrealistic or farfetched. It's jut a common worldview that's caught on and is trending right now, much like there was a common worldview 50 or 100 years ago about certain things. Is it the best? Time will tell. I imagine 50 years ago they thought there ways were best too, whilst inadvertently subjugating people. The obvious issue with it this time around - with all this freedom of opinion, you're also removing the freedom of opinion from people who are critical of it, as this Turtle Rock firing demonstrates, as does the Mozilla CEO firing that happened a while back.
I agree with what he said - none of us can say for sure that our views won't be considered bigoted and outdated in the future. Society moves forward regardless of if we are comfortable or not with it. but if you use a professional account for your personal opinions, they have every right to fire you.
good thing he was fired, my hurt feelings were reaching critical levels. having an opinion in america unpopular with the majority? not even once.
You can help being racist as much as you can control race itself
lol excellent defense of racism katbug
He made a racist comment in his own home. If you're telling me that's worth Banning him from the NBA, Fining him a ludicrous amount of money, publicly shaming him on national television for days, including the President of the United States commenting on it isn't disproportionate and oppressive then you're nuts. It is. I say some pretty bigoted things in my own house. Would it be right to be secretly recorded, then have that released to the public, and I lose my job or 30 year career over it? No, it wouldn't. And anyone that wants to say it is can get fucked, honestly
it's not right to be wiretapped obvs, but once a recording has been leaked you can't make people unhear it.
A sports organization doesnt need to be a democracy which enables free speech
this guy is a proper cunt. he got let go from treyarch because he would join games on treyarch's games, use the most broken and overpowered stuff in the game, call people faggots when they kill him, then send messages to their xbox live profile usually calling them faggots again. after that he went to Riot Games and I don't know why but he was only there for like a year. now he's moved on to another developer and he's already been let go. he's also been known to literally just make up lies on the spot during interviews to sell the games he's promoting.
lol excellent defense of racism katbug
you and your self righteousness and derisive comments that contain no actual argument aint really doin much better pal sit the fuck down ok you make me embarrassed to be on your side [editline]2nd May 2014[/editline]
Damn this country really is losing its mind. This guy was a little racist in private, gets shamed by the media, the president, fined, forced to sell his team, banned from all NBA games. Then this guy says Hey look, he said it in the comfort of his own home in a country that allows anyone to have a bigoted opinion, maybe this is a bit unfair and extreme, and now He's fired too. Just wow. Sounds like oppression has jumped races. The reaction to all of this has just been absolutely and completely disproportionate to what happened, so much so that Sterling has become a victim. But he has so much money, it's not a big deal to him. I bet he shrugged it off because he can. But what about some poor guy who lives to paycheck to paycheck? Perhaps a guy like this community manager. If he says something people don't like in the privacy of his own house, is it right to castrate the guy if people find out about it?
I don't see why anybody should have the right to be hateful towards other people based on skin color. I think it's totally reasonable to have unjustified racism universally shunned. Or, look at it this way; This guy has a right to be a hateful idiot? Sure, let him! Companies and individuals also have the right to not want to associate with hateful bigots. These companies have the right, as per signed and legally binding contracts, to fire employees over matters such as these.
You can help being racist as much as you can control race itself
haha what? an objectively wrong opinion is not on the same level as race. that's honestly pretty insulting that you would equate the two just to make racism look as natural as the color of someone's skin.
you and your self righteousness and derisive comments that contain no actual argument aint really doin much better pal sit the fuck down ok you make me embarrassed to be on your side [editline]2nd May 2014[/editline] I don't see why anybody should have the right to be hateful towards other people based on skin color. Why would anybody choose to be hateful, except if they believed their hate to be for a good reason? Why would anybody choose any negative aspect of their personality unless they believed themselves to be bound to it. People being bigoted doesn't make them hades, it merely means they are ignorant. And why would you gleefully harass an ignorant person for your own satisfaction, if their ignorance was not of their choosing, instead of helping them to see through their ignorance? Does that not also make you ignorant and self obsessed?
lol the billionaire is a victim of this horrible tragedy of him being racist [editline]2nd May 2014[/editline]
You can help being racist as much as you can control race itself
holy shit
If this Twitter account is officially linked to Turtle Rock then it's justified,
Yeah, I work for EE (Basically Verizon/AT&T if you're American) and they say if we follow EE/they follow us or we tag them in a post when our account isn't private it can get us fired, not for the tweet, if we have swearwords or anything slanderous against customers or basically anything which is perceived as taboo in todays society (Which is fucking everything) so we all just private our accounts, which is kinda unfortunate.
you and your self righteousness and derisive comments that contain no actual argument aint really doin much better pal
But they totally are, he's not defending racism, Katbug is, and has a history of being awful. Bringing attention to him posting that shit isn't harming anybody but the shitposter.
holy shit
It's true though, how is it not? Do you choose your parents? Do you choose your living situation? Do you choose the community you grow up in?
It's true though, how is it not? Do you choose your parents? Do you choose your living situation? Do you choose the community you grow up in?
so are you just going to argue that free will as a concept is a lie or what
lol excellent defense of racism katbug
I'm not defending it you mong, but racism is something that's bred from either your living situation or a direct reaction to something that's happened in your life

Does that not also make you ignorant and self obsessed?
To a certain extent there is no choice in bigotry, we like people who look like us, etc. But you are able to choose to ignore those more primal instincts, and not vocalise your hatred for other races or minorities. So there is a choice in being a bigot, it's a concious decision to decide "yes, I'm going to talk about how black people are lesser beings" and to treat them as such. Ignorance plays a part sure, as does upbringing and exposure. But that doesn't stop them from being bigoted fucks, we're living in an age where global communication is easy, you have no excuse for a lack of exposure today with TV, film, music, the Internet and many more things connecting us. "harassing" bigots isn't for our own satisfaction, it's to point out that they're being bigots, that what they did was wrong and they need to fix it. Most people here actually try and explain to bigots why they fucked up, and help them fix it. It's when they ignore our attempts and continue anyway the "harassment" starts.
so are you just going to argue that free will as a concept is a lie or what
Some things are uncontrollable, others are. More of dualism, really.
I'm not defending it you mong, but racism is something that's bred from either your living situation or a direct reaction to something that's happened in your life
And it's something you choose to act on. Something you choose to indulge in. I grew up with a exceptionally racist father (brown? you're a "gas mark n" (n based on skin tone). Possibly Muslim? You're a paki). Yet I've known not to be a racist piece of wank since I was like 12 or something, around the time I actually started thinking about this shit. "But but but...my PARENTS!" is no excuse for being a racist asshole. You are defending racist actions in that post, no excuses.

Second post states he has the right to be a bigot in his own home. This is true. Never does he or I excuse any action on those feelings.

You're working for a private entity, if they don't want to have you around, they don't have to. The source of the evidence against him doesn't matter to them because it's not a legal proceeding, it's just them letting him go. Yeah it sucks that someone invaded his privacy, but when you're a big name like he was, people are going to try to find shit on you. He might be able to take whoever did it to court, but he's still a bigot.
Some things are uncontrollable, others are. More of dualism, really.
i used to be pretty racist when i was younger tbh. i would hear a watered-down BNP statement that sounds really heinously awful if you think about it for more than a minute and be like "yeah i can get with that," just cos i was too stupid to know what racism was and why it led to bad things. i would have totally bought into that EDL stuff if it was in the news more often around that age. if i made a habit of denying that there's a problem and acted like you just can't choose to get educated on these things, i would still be where i was, and i would still be a monolithic fuckwit. if someone is racist, we're not going to teach them any better by just going "oh you're from the 60's/the south/anywhere or anytime i've construed to be sufficiently stupid? oh okay that's fine then." i'm not going to settle for that kind of apologist load, and you shouldn't either.

It's entirely based on the society that's around you and who you grew up with. If you escaped the bigotry of your family, that's wonderful, but it's likely because the society you grew up in is more progressive in general. It's going to happen when we're old as fuck too, our opinions and feelings are almost guaranteed to be seen as backwards in the next 70-80 years.
