That isn't a fact though. The source says: "18% of gay and bisexual men tested in 2011 had HIV." What this means... is that the sample group weren't tested randomly. They came to clinics to get themselves tested. People usually get themselves tested for a reason, they are afraid that they have an STD, because they were probably behaving irresponsibly.
So saying that this statistic can be used to conclude that 18% of gay men have HIV/AIDS is a bit crazy.
(742,556)/(.016*308,745,538) = 15%
(total gay people with HIV/AIDS)/(% of total population that is gay*total population) = (percent of gay people who have HIV/AIDS)
That would be the actual percentage. So not quite 18%, but still very high.

Also, population numbers are from 2010 since that's what the HIV/AIDS infection rates are from. The % of the total population that identifies as gay comes from the only large scale survey within the NHIS.

I had made a mistake on some of the numbers. They should now be correct.
The facts are that 18% of gay men have HIV/AIDS, that's almost 1 in 5.
Actually it seems to be that 10.9% of gay/bisexual men have HIV. That's pretty much 1 in 10. Which is half the odds that you were laying down.
Here's why I came up with this: (I'd like to be proven wrong because that is a sad statistic)
At the end of 2010, of the estimated 872,990 persons living with an HIV diagnosis, 440,408 (50%) were gay/bisexual men. (source)
So almost half a million American gay/bisexual men are thought to have HIV.
But how many Gay/Bisexual male Americans are there?
Well a paper on the subject; A pdf titled "How many people are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender?". Estimates that there are ~4,000,000 gay/bisexual American males.
So to get the percentage of gay/bisexual American men with AIDS . (440,408 / 4,030,946) * 100 = (0.10925673526) * 100 = 10.9%

I think your method there looks much more reliable. But you got percentage of population that are gay, is that not meant to be percentage of population that are gay/bisexual males, specifically?
Also our sources are conflicting pretty wildly. Which can't really be helped... Where did you get the stats though? Individually I mean...
Anal sex is also the highest risk form of sex when it comes to STDs*. That also happens to be the kind of sex that gay men usually have.
[editline]15th August 2014[/editline]
Let's be honest here. The facts are that 18% of gay men have HIV/AIDS, that's almost 1 in 5.* That's an insanely huge percentage of the whole. It's also important to point out that a large portion of people don't know that they have HIV and that the tests aren't 100% accurate. It can take up to 6 months for the necessary antibodies to become prevalent enough for the test to give a positive result.**

Keep in mind that because the gay population is smaller there are going to be more overlapping pairs (unavoidable, unless gay people start having fewer sexual partners proportionate to the total lower number) and that contributes to the spread of HIV as well. It's not solely the method of sex, although you're totally correct that anal sex has the highest risk of HIV transmission. (And I'm not arguing with the rest of the post or disagreeing with your premise)
Well I guess you could say in this case there'll be no queer eye for the straight guy.

It really is a combination of all the things that make people high risk: a higher number of sexual partners on average, the highest risk type of sex, etc. It just adds up when they all compound. It really is a depressing state of affairs when 10%-20% of all gay people have such a brutal disease.
how do you even know if someone has had homosexual sex in the past 5 years? what a fucking ridiculous law
I've given blood before. They give you a form before you do it and blatantly ask you.
I literally saw a box that asked if I had "anal or oral sex with another man in the last 5 years"
Yes, there really is:
"Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM)a represent approximately 2% of the United States population, yet are the population most severely affected by HIV. In 2010, young gay and bisexual men (aged 13-24 years) accounted for 72% of new HIV infections among all persons aged 13 to 24" (http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/risk/gender/msm/facts/index.html)
2% of the population accounting for 74% of new HIV infections in any age group is MASSIVE.
This.
I'm not homophobic in the slightest, but facts are facts, and let's leave the causation of that out of the discussion. I can see why they would be worried about the spreading of the virus, but still it's ridiculous how they are handling it.
Wait, heart, liver, kidneys and lungs are okay but eyes are not?
