A few weeks ago, back when the 2012 London Olympics were still going strong, German weightlifter Matthias Steiner accidentally dropped over 400 pounds on his neck. It was terrifying, obviously, but because Steiner walked away relatively unscathed, the incident didn’t really leave an impression.
What happened last week to Russian weightlifter Igor Golushkin will definitely leave an impression.
Golushkin, 34, was competing in a powerlifting competition when, for whatever reason, the bar slipped out of his hands and dropped straight onto his chest.
As reported by Red Hot Russia (via The Big Lead ):
"According to eyewitness, the sportsman used unsafe (banned) technique called “open grip” [ed: possibly related to the position of thumb while holding the bar]. Already during the training session he had the weight of 160 kg slipping from his hands, but then spotters managed to hold the bar.
During the competition, however, the spotters did not succeed to catch the bar in time. Everything happened very quickly. With the torn diaphragm and broken ribs the sportsman was brought to hospital.
UPDATE: The injury appeared to be fatal. Igor died in hospital from heart concussion."
The worst thing about this is that it was inevitable. How many near-misses did we need to see before folks realized that stricter safety rules needed to be implemented at these contests? Did we really have to watch a 34-year-old man to die in order to understand that people who lift mind-blowing amounts of weight over their heads must be protected from themselves?
It’s too late to do anything for Golushkin now, but hopefully this tragedy will get everyone to open their eyes about how dangerous this sport really is.
Holy shit, how that thing bounced off...
HOLY FUCKING SHIT OF MOTHER FUCKKK NOPEeeenopenoo
NOPE.
Holy shit that was hard to watch. Why the fuck weren't they spotting him? Negligence at its finest.
Dear God, that looked incredibly painful. Poor man.
Nonono.
Jesus christ that looked painful.
He dropped a 200 pound bar on his chest, let's get him some water.
This is going to be an excuse for me not to do sports.

I do powerlifting myself.
And i can tell you that the red guy acted like a fucking moron, if it's heavy weights involved you are REQUIRED to make sure you can grab it before something bad happens.
Though it happened fast, the red guy didn't even hold his hands under the damn weight. It would have injured him yes. But there would be a better chance for him if the weight fell on two hands before landing straight onto his chest.
the spotters were really fucking terrible, when he was struggling they didnt even have their hand near the bar
blame the people who were supposed to keep him safe, not his mistake of having an open grip.
Why was nobody spotting him....
Why the fuck did they clap
I blame the red guy, I feel like if both of the spotters were ready (which the other guy was) this could had been completely different, wherein the lifter might had not died.
This is why I never ever lift with an open grip, not even at lower weights.

"good try!" trying to make him feel better, you know, they didn't really...know what happened.

oh no what an extreme injury which totally compares to this :downs:
To see his ribs just cave in like that was horrific.

I sprained my ankle once, nearly died.

lol never said that it compared you dunce, I'm just saying that when you're in shock from an accident like this then wanting water isn't illogical.
Also, I'm glad it wasn't an extreme injury, falling off a bike going downhill with no helmet or other pads, breaking my collar bone and not hitting my head at all, or otherwise extreme injuries to my neck/head region...that's just plain luck, luck I won't ever test again, and I have surely learned my lesson.
