Wall St. Vs. Rocky Road.
And a surprising turn of events.
My dad, who lives in Madison, Wisconsin, is going to occupy Madison today. I wish there was an occupy Detroit because I would go. Detroit is maybe 48 miles away from me.

Nice. And funnily enough, they describe OWS's goals better than anyone else has said so far.

I always find protests so interesting because neither side is willing to say they did something wrong.

I went yesterday, it was pretty slow though. Most people were just chilling.

My personal opinion is, I support the their cause and everything, but the amount of conspiracy theorists kind of reduces their credibility.
but the amount of hipsters
you have to be a moron to actually consider this in the movement's credibility. hiptser at the most definite of definitions is just a vague art/fashion thing.
how dare those damn hipsters exist and support a movement
how dare they

Are you suggesting the people did something wrong?
Are you suggesting the people did something wrong?
Well people taking out loans they know that they could never repay definitely played a part in the meltdown. Yeah they were heavily encouraged by both the government and the lending agencies to take out these loans but still, personal responsibility has to come into it at some point. I am not saying that this failure of personal responsibility was the only culprit, or even a major culprit, but we should acknowledge that the meltdown wasn't completely the banks fault or completely the governments fault.
Also have a crappy cell phone pick of the march today in Philly:

The way I see it is the people did play a fuckup in the meltdown, But the bank's were helped by the goverment with money by the people. Therefor the banks should chill out and stop going out for more profit. Seriously, Give the people a break after the people's tax money went towards making sure the banks didn't fall. The guy who is a month behind on mortage shouldn't loose his house it just makes everything worse.
The only way the economy will get better when everyone finally notices stop going for fucking profit and make enough to continue business as regular. Banks charging extra fees and increasing interest rates does nothing to fix the economy but make shit worse.

Stop going for profit? You have no idea of how businesses work. Not going for profit means going from growth to maturity, and if there is still no motivation for profit the business will go into decline. Would you as a business owner want that to happen? Jobs are also at risk if a business stagnates. Seriously, aiming for profit is actually beneficial for the business' operation and can bring about growth which may also lead to more employment and that helps the economy. You need to study the world of business a lot more.
Although there is some validity in the protests about corruption and possibly other things, most of these protesters got it wrong about the "greedy" part with businesses. A desire for profit (through growth), which many people are mistaking for "greed", is what keeps a business going and the economy healthy.

A $5 fee for using one's debit card (ala Bank of America) does nothing to keep the economy healthy.

Next thing you know someone will show up at the movement in a car belonging to a brand that I do not like! That will kill the movement for sure

We lost a war and the country turned to shit? :v:
I'd hate for that to happen to the places we're in now, so much effort wasted. We shouldn't start shit if we have no intention to finish it.
On another note, the Anarchists and Hippy types I'm seeing make me worry. The media could easily use them to de-legitimatize the movement.

We didn't lose the war because people protested it, and the country didn't turn to shit because people protested.

It depends where the money is invested, and it is true that the situation of a bank may be different from other businesses. But what is to say that banks don't donate to worthy causes? Many banks down here support local communities and even causes like funding small businesses, and so does the Bank of America. Although not all of the $5 would go to such causes, and such causes more than likely weren't the reason for the introduction of that new fee, but just imagine how much more they could do to help others. I wonder if any change will occur because of all of this.

More than likely? Their response to criticism of that fee was "people should recognize we have a right to make a profit".

Well they are a business, so they do don't they? Hell if they are running at a loss they will eventually collapse, and that's less competition for the existing banks to deal with. I don't necessarily agree with the $5 fee thing, but they do have a right to make profit through other means.
i hate the fucking cultural narrative people have installed about hippies. hippies did a lot of shit back in the 1960-70's that resulted in positive change to both culture and policy but due to the cultural narrative instilled by people in charge of the institution known as "the moral majority" anytime the word hippie is used it's seen as some kind of derogatory term.
i heard someone on the news disparaging people because of bongo drums, how the fuck does that make any sense?
and why is it that if you smoke pot you're automatically politically inept? didn't stop the founding fathers much...
Occupy Edinburgh taking place in 6 days. This thing's picked up a hell of a lot of speed and credibility

Coming from the guy who is for racial profiling against Middle Easterners suspected to be terrorists, when he himself financially supports the IRA, which is a terrorist organization itself.

This website is everything wrong with the American Delusion - The idea that you on your own make your destiny, and that nothing else matters. The American Delusion is centered around the principle that through hard work, anyone can be successful and achieve whatever they want.
Now.. let's check that with what is actually happening out there. How often does someone cross multiple class boundaries to rise to the top? It does happen, but only through amazing opportunity, unforeseen advantages, and many helping hands that are entirely outside of our control. Yes, diligence and personal strengths do play a role, but no where near as much as we want to think. Those who are successful were helped to be successful - They did not make it the whole way on their own.
As long as they can keep us believing in their so called "American Dream", of course we'll be as docile as lambs to the slaughter - why would we blame them for ruining our economy when we believe it is our fault for not surviving it?
Those of you who want to really understand what actually happens when someone becomes successful should read this book - http://www.gladwell.com/outliers/index.html
