Not our fault we made the successful move to social democracy years ago.
Is that why there's an Occupy Melbourne
What the hell do you think the entirety of Scandinavia is
Social democracies still have capitalism
Socialism has a market system.
OWS even had their own:
I saw a guy walk past me at the protest, didn't know if he was going for the look, but he was wearing a beret and looked EXACTLY like che, only thing was he needed the beard.
To be fair, that picture is not actually from the Wall Street protests.
[editline]9th October 2011[/editline]
That and none of the media sources, even the disparaging ones like Fox News, aren't avoiding reporting on it. MSNBC speaks pretty favorably of the protests and CNN is mixed, so I don't really understand the point of that image.
CNN is barely there, and Fox is not being fair in their reporting.
I may have missed it, but the people down there haven't heard a peep from anyone but MSNBC, local news networks and occasionally Fox, but that's more antagonistic.
Why do people think that's a bad thing?
Corporations being people for the sake of criminal prosecution and liability is a fine thing, and the "money shouldn't be in politics" line is fine but has nothing to do with corporate personhood.
How come hospitals, federal agencies, police departments, fire departments, and the like aren't considered people?
Corporations aren't people, it's not a "fine thing", it's the government granting more rights to corporations.
Is that why there's an Occupy Melbourne
There's an occupy melbourne which is all about political gesturing. I know two of the big players behind the occupymelb movement, and they are absolute fucking scumbags. They're typical politicians, except younger, and supporting better ideals.
It's also ironic as all hell, because most australians are the 10% that are immensely more well off than the 90%, and we come first or second in a bunch of quality of life rankings.
I feel it's the typical relatively well-off australians who complain about everything, and try to use the traction generated in the US just to further their own personal political career, and I find that absolutely fucking reprehensible.
I like it how so much information about the protests goes about the internet.
"We will be protesting here", Ok just lemme note that down in my book.
"Then we march over here" Ok let me just draw a map in my book.
"We will shout here" And we shall meet here! Alright, time to get my coat and some drinks.
Meanwhile the authorities inevitably end up reading it and anticipating the event.

That's not a bad thing. It's not like a massive crowd of people go unnoticed anyway, and the same police officers watching over the protest and making sure it's peaceful are going to be following them around to make sure it stays that way.
The authorities aren't the bad guys, yes there are a few bad apples, but they are there to protect the protesters just as much as they are everyone else.
How come hospitals, federal agencies, police departments, fire departments, and the like aren't considered people?
Don't be stupid. Some hospitals are people, and there's no need to consider public services people to reduce agent liability when they already have this little old thing called the government to pick up the tab when their workers fuck up. You don't need to give liability protection to the FBI or municipal police that way, they're already covered to a greater degree.
Corporations aren't people, it's not a "fine thing", it's the government granting more rights to corporations.
Start naming these "rights" and telling me how they impinge on you.
I think most people are against corporate personhood because of the Citizens v. United decision, in which it was used as the main reason why you can't restrict corporate donations to campaigns. I don't know enough about the ins and outs of corporate personhood to say whether as a whole it should be abandoned, but allowing corporation to give unlimited funds to campaigns is definitely something I don't agree with.
Right, and that's just the thing, the problem isn't that the corporation can donate, because individuals within it would anyway, that just makes the paperwork easier throwing it down with the rest of the "goodwill" junk on their finance sheet.
The problem is that there's no spending cap, which is a problem with or without corporate personhood.
There's now an Occupy Yucca Valley.
If we only get 200 people it'd still be amazing.
Edit:
Apparently OWS is supported by useful idiot communists. I would have never guessed.

So? These are public events, it's not like it's a secret meeting.

I seriously want to see how Occupy YV turns out because I'm about 10 miles away. It shouldn't be big because it's a relatively small desert community but it is close to 29 Palms MCAGCC.
Going to occupy okc with friends tomorrow.

You never would have guessed that an anti-corporation movement is backed by marxists who view the most influential unit of the capitalist system as the progenitor of virtually everything that is wrong in the world?

Eh, they make the crowd look bigger at least.
But they also make it look bad.

Oh good, Contag is here to remind us that everything is OK and there's no such thing as corruption.
To people who don't think OWS and similar protests are having any effect:
The fact that there are now major riots and protests springing up in some of the biggest cities in America is fucking amazing.
It shows the tenacity and anger of the American public (Or at least a small percent), and a growing realization that politicians are all bought and paid for by the people who run the country.
The idea of there being actual ongoing protests randomly springing up in America is something that shouldn't be so shocking, it's what the country was founded on. Even Jefferson said that a revolution was necessary almost every 20 years.
What's more is the fact that more and more people are starting to join the End the Fed movement.
Jefferson also said:
"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered...I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies... The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs."
Even though I don't agree with the Marxist views of some of the protesters, I'm still extremely glad that they are there, making their presence be known and their voices be heard.
Are there any videos or stuff you can link me proving the media is selectively interviewing dumb people in the OWS movement? My dad and some other people I know are CONVINCED they are all 18 yr old drop outs with no life, doing drugs, worthless, juvenile delinquents, etc. Like they claim "they are ignorant, don't know what they want, etc, I saw it on the news!".

There are a number of idiot teens going down there because of the Anonymous factor, but if you actually watched videos and looked at the crowds you can see there are actually plenty of regular people of all ages, including full grown adults down there protesting. The media is doing a great job of focusing on the hippie camps because it makes the movement look childish and insignificant.
There are also some pictures of retired Soldiers, Elderly, and someone said there was a Scientist or something too.
Might wanna find / show them those.

I was there myself, most of them are adults or people IN college. I saw an 89 year old man there.
[editline]10th October 2011[/editline]
Doctors, paramedics, construction workers, soldiers, college students, retired police and firefighters. They're all down there.

Wow way to read my post.
I was talking about australia, and how the occupyaustralia protests are intellectually dishonest because it steals and diminishes the extremely legitimate protests that are ongoing in America.

What's wrong with marxists?
Although I don't necessarily agree with their historical materialism, their contributions to critical analysis and conceptualizations of the world are apt enough that a good half of the authors I cite associate themselves with marxism.

There are certainly philosophers on both ends of the political spectrum, but whether they're credible or not is up to the reader. For example I take Marx, Engels, or Luxembourg far more seriously than Ayn Rand.
I've been posting useful news snippets and pictures on facebook, to keep friends updated. Meanwhile another guy I know has been posting stupid crap like this:

The bottom two comments are my response. I normally ignore him but I was just really ticked about that.

I really dislike this picture. It presents the idea that somehow "jobs are all around us, we just don't want to work!!" as if that is the protester's message.

Yeah, the guy posting this stuff really got on my nerves. I don't intend to get any actual argument going, because even though I know I'm more informed, they are conservative southern baptists, so naturally there's no penetrating that thick skull with actual knowledge about the issues.

Agreed... The picture doesnt depict the bare, decaying trees and the invisible overlords sucking the life from them atop their concrete palaces above.
Someone needs to draw one of how it really is, a bunch of rich fucks sitting ontop a golden tower, government offices below them, and the people alone in the streets.

I can do it but it's going to be stick figures with shitty cigars sticking out of their mouths, sitting on a square with a bunch of dots around the bottom.
Someone needs to draw one of how it really is, a bunch of rich fucks sitting ontop a golden tower, government offices below them, and the people alone in the streets.
No one has to. They literally did that with the video of all the rich people in the cafe in that one video. Sitting there all calmly while police officers and protesters below.
