http://silverunderground.com/2011/10/occupysf-the-day-of-the-barricades/ [release]At 2:00 am Thursday morning 80 officers wearing riot helmets and carrying batons raided the encampment anyway. Police formed a perimeter separating the protesters from their supplies as the Department of Public Works seized nine truckloads of tents, communications equipment, medical supplies, food and other donations. About fifty protesters responded with peaceful civil disobedience, standing in front of the trucks, and forming a human chain to impede them from stealing their supplies. Police responded by cracking skulls, which protesters say was excessive force. You be the judge. The first blow from the police occurs one minute in.[/release] Click the link to see the video it refers to [release]Only one arrest was made, but at least three protesters sustained injuries including a 17 year old girl who was punched and thrown to the ground simply for standing too close. One officer reportedly told another activist, “I can’t wait to beat your face in.”[/release] Despicable
What is the point? Even if one of the guys did shit on a police car, how does that in any way discredit the movement as a political force? It probably discredits that guy, but why would you look at that and say "hey you know, this guy shit on a police car, I don't know if I can support the other thousands of protesters"?
funny how when people pointed out all the racists in the tea party people like glaber would jump to say "NO NO NO YOU CAN'T DISCREDIT THE WHOLE MOVEMENT BECAUSE OF A FEW NO-GOODNICKS!"

"The first civil war was not won with protest." I'm pretty damn sure the Confederates didn't win with guns either.
Huh? Just because one side that used guns lost doesn't mean it was a peaceful conflict :v:
Sorry should've given more context, he wants us to start a second civil war. I referenced the Confederates since they were the ones to have caused the first.

I met a friend at orientation who posted on Facebook that an officer of the Boston PD choked him, in an attempt to have let go of a friend and fellow protester. He counted the number of arrests at 130.
I like how the Boston protesters were removed for trespassing as well as, and I quote, "A conservancy group had planted shrubs worth around $150,000 along the greenway and officials were worried about damage, The Washington Post reported." Also, whats with the huge amount of Riot police? Why are they breaking out the big guns, they're just antagonizing the people into responding in just a way. God dammit.

Amazingly I seem to be the only person at my school who knows anything about this event. I put it in for a suggestion for a folio piece in English and the teacher said "Wall Street protests?"

what's this "I am the 53" bullshit? I mean, are people completely oblivious to that fact that they're being forced into basically working for nothing? It's barely better then slave labor when even when you work a full time job you cannot sustain yourself.
Excuse my ignorance but what's 53 stand for?
Excuse my ignorance but what's 53 stand for?
the majority that conservatives will always insist that they have in their minds
I think it refers to the 53% who paid federal income tax last year.
TJ makes some good points in this video.
he says "fuck you" rather nicely
Sorry should've given more context, he wants us to start a second civil war. I've just finished reading this thread from the beginning, and I'll only comment regarding one issue: Police brutality. In Egypt, as you may know, we had it much, much worse. Yet at the beginning of the protests (that soon turned into revolution), I found the most interesting aspect was speaking to cops, and observing their reactions and facial expressions. Body language says a lot. While they may give you a stern (or even aggressive) look, on the inside they hurt; they deal with the same problems you're protesting on daily basis. Corruption runs through the force like anywhere else, and in our case, the cops made barely enough money to scrape by, they suffered and their only resort was corruption and bribery to live within the minimum limits and provide for their families. When a cop uses excessive force, they're channelling their frustrations towards the nearest target, you. Surely, some are 'sociopathic' (And I use the term loosely) and some are basically a reincarnation of the obnoxious kid with a toy gun (albeit a real gun this time), but that doesn't mean that all of them act the same way, they may feel like it, but most (or some, depending on where you're at) manage to exercise self-control and restraint. Some feel insecure about reacting to injustice and fear for their jobs (and consequently the fate of their families) and resort to apathy as their way of coping with the situation. To deal with a policeman in protests you need to be aware of this, and you have to try to get them on your side. Talk to them and try to figure out how they feel about this, don't think that their disregard of your words means that they don't care. It means that they want to avoid the subject, that they don't want to confront the conflict going inside their heads and express their frustrations.. at least publicly, unlike yourself.
:v:
I think this photo says a lot, think of what's going through this cop's head as he stands there contemplating at the protester's sign. Try to reach out and give them the message that you understand this, that you know how they feel and think, and that you respect it. They have a job and they're fulfilling their role, but also remind them of their vows, and how said vows aren't about their loyalty to a government, a corporation, a politician, a superior, nor a leader. Remind them that governments change, leaders change, and that their ultimate loyalty should be to the people, people such as you, standing there in the cold and the rain to try and grant them a better future without corruption and corporate influence, a future where they can provide their families with a better life, along with you and everybody else. If they're willing to hear you out (even if they don't vocally respond), then know that on the inside, they're considering joining you, even if they can't voice it out and support you in public.. yet.
I don't think a civil war would even be possible in this age. For one, the US only has one military, who would fund a second army? the working class? State governors? Secondly, this would be no war. To the rich elite, and US military, it would be a terrorist insurgency inside the country. To the opposing working class, it would be a rebellion and resistance.

I'm going to the Occupy Birmingham protest this Saturday, I think even my dad's coming along.
