Also if all 20,000 of us who are unhappy just quit then good luck getting a tube to work for the foreseeable future!
Couple Londoners I hang out with on teamspeak were actually commenting on this specifically. They universally said they just wished you people would quit so some people willing to get overpaid could come in and do your jobs.
Funny how that works out.
I don't think tube drivers should be paid less, other people should be paid more, other jobs need better pay and better unions, or at least better representation.
The excuse that "people everywhere else get shit pay, so you should too" is a pretty crappy argument, nobody should ever have to "just deal with it", if you have shit pay you should try and get better conditions. They way some have said "They should just be happy with their lots" reminds me of that bit in Bioshock infinite, Finkton, where the workers are constantly pipes propaganda and demotivating messages to keep the compliant under shitty conditions.
Now perhaps a union wielded with all the grace and precision of a sledgehammer is not the right idea, but a voice for those too small to be seen is the way to go. Like shit, I wish I had some kind of union to fight my corner because god fucking damn having to get up at 4am on a saturday and sunday for a few minimum wage hours takes it's toll after a while. And I have it easy, some people there have to start at shitty'o'clock in the morning and work till 4PM, least I only work about 5 hours a Day and can come home, have a nap and be up in time for lunch.
The price of living far exceeds the minimum wage these days, luckily I do not HAVE to live on this money and it's just for luxuries, but, using the tube workers as an example, they work very long days, nearly seven days a week and tend to live in London where the rent on some houses is more expensive by a few fold compared to the rest of the country. To the point where it's cheaper each week to rent a house elsewhere and buy a train ticket each day. And now the TFL bosses want them to work more hours at no extra pay, fuck that shit, nobody should EVER have to work for free, even if they already get money in some way. Yes you can choose to volunteer, but volunteering is a choice and should always be done out of goodness of heart.
And yes, everyone jumps on the bandwagon of "Oh they are inconveniencing lots of people, their needs are outweighed by the needs of commuters" like I get that delays on the tubes cause problems. That being said, tube workers DO put in long and unsociable hours, generally working longer per week than most, hence their large annual salaries, it due to bulk hours, although their rate of pay is decent, make no mistake, living in London is so expensive they basically NEED it.
I really hope they don't give in to you dickbags.
I know you're whining about unsociable hours and no social life but fuck me, there are post graduates who don't make what you earn.
You want real unsociable hours? Go stack shelves night shift for tescos or Sainsburys earning just above minimum wage.
Hell, I just finished my degree. In January I start my training at Sandhurst to become an Officer in the Army. My salary for the next two years will be only £30,000. That's low for a post graduate but I accept that pay and I accept that's the life I'll have.
You guys don't think £49,000 is enough for you to to drive trains?
What an absolute joke. I really hope your union gets torn to shit by either the public or the government
this argument is pathetic, "you should be paid poorly because others are paid MORE poorly" it's bad logic

listen to the audio clip in this article.
Also we had a great day and support was pretty good, a lot of people who had been inconvenienced came up to us and supported us, with bus drivers beeping their horns as they passed, taxi drivers giving thumbs up and it was generally a good day.
Also if all 20,000 of us who are unhappy just quit then good luck getting a tube to work for the foreseeable future!

Gee I wonder why the taxi drivers support you striking

Except no one is saying they're paid poorly for their lack of skills and qualifications, quite the opposite actually.

Heeeere we go again...
Wish you could just fire the strikers and employ people that don't find £30-£50k for driving a train unreasonable.
I'll be lucky to make £20k as a post grad at this point.
