you CANNOT fix stupid. In fact, studies show for some people it makes then at least 60% dumber. They were already under average to boot, anyways!

90 percent of the people in this thread parents are probably christian. It's a long time until you can say that "all people not from backwaters" are atheists.
For one, how many Christians do you do who have actually read the Bible in it's entirety? Secondly, it's an absurd point to make as any atheist or agnostic could easily spend the same amount of time reading a quality piece of literature of the same or greater difficulty.
I'm not disagreeing with that. You're missing my point.
My point is that you can read literature of that difficulty like another book but at the same time be in a religious state of mind.
I'd like to know a little more about that study. It seems to me that the statistics they have are irrelevant to the ambiguous and rather vast claim they make.
I challenge you to read the experiments without reading the conductor's conclusions. Would you come to the same conclusion they did? I felt it was a bit of a stretch to conclude thoughts of God make us slackers.

Yep and I'll do it simply because you asked me.
[sp]Nope[/sp]
I logged on and saw this article in yahoo.
First thing i thought was: I'm going to log on to facepunch and this article is going to be in the popular section.
The second thing a thought was: Oh lord, more ammunition for facepunch's crusade against religion.
I didn't know choosing to be an atheist also means you are dedicated to disproving religion at every chance you get in your life.
Why can't people just be tolerant or others.
I believe in the truth.
I believe in the reality of our existence.
It's hopeless.
I believe there is no truth.
I believe reality is an abstract.
It's just plain nothing.
hey, hey guys. Its a random study made by random people and submitted to yahoo.
Take with a grain of salt.

it's hard to be tolerant of a bunch of made up hypocritical bullshit
it's hard to be tolerant of a bunch of made up hypocritical bullshit
And it can be really hard to tolerate a bunch of intolerant assholes who feel the need to attack people cause they think differently. Goes both ways dude.
it's hard to be tolerant of a bunch of made up hypocritical bullshit
Then maybe you should read the bible.
Even if you aren't religious, the bible teaches you worth while life lessons.
And one of them is to be tolerant of others. You'll live a much happier life that way.
oh boy another religion thread
I already live a happy life.
I like how nobody ever gets the point of religion in these threads.
How about you explain it if we're all too stupid to get it?
I already live a happy life.
I said happier. As in you'll stop being so concerned with everyone elses beliefs and start enjoying yourself a lot more.
In all honesty, all these people bashing religion, should allow people to think what they want to think and believe in what they want to believe in. It disgusts me that anytime there is a religion related article or topic, that people need to go on and bash people who think and believe differently.
awesome point
nothing is above bashing if you have a justified reason to bash it
you're saying if your neighbour genuinely believed that black people were subhuman and didn't deserve to live, and those thoughts influenced his/her actions, the way s/he voted etc., you'd just say "hey, just let them live how they want to live"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance
seriously, EVERY opinion that someone puts out there should be allowed to be subject to reasoned scrutiny.
[editline]31st October 2011[/editline]
you can't just say "whoa, hey, don't be knocking his beliefs, man"
that's just apathetic and intellectually barren, and it eventually allows intolerant and hateful ideologies to be taken seriously
You're an idiot, maybe you should look up Europe and China/Japan some time, those places are full of millions of atheists/irreligious people.

That's part of what makes Europe attractive to me, man.

But the numbers are still very high elsewhere. Atheist are still outnumbered on the global scale.
Funny how people fail to see the simple truth when it comes down to God. It is a product of the creative human mind. No evidence, no controversy in that. It's the truth.
Religiousness isn't only about God though... God would only wish for you to do what's right by your heart, if anything. "Love thy Neighbor"
But if that involves killing someone for his welfare check, you are not really doing what's right by your heart. Or maybe you are, doing what's right by your cold-hearted heart.
By this logic aliens are a figment of my imagination since the idea is realistically bound to properties that would more than likely defy human thinking or understanding. Aliens must not exist because I can't see them or prove with the closed mainframe that's my mind and life experience that they don't exist. See what I mean?
On topic, though, this is an interesting find. It doesn't really take down enough detail to convince me that believing in God is generally related to being more slack. Many Muslims have a fatalistic "Allah willed it" take on everything and think that what happens is what happens and that it was pretty much doomed to be that way. I personally don't find myself more lax and thinking "well, God will hand me a pile of gold if I'm a good boy."
Furthermore, many of these "educated" and "liberal" people are young, stupid, arrogant, or any combination of the above. I've seen how people can assume God doesn't exist or just not care because they think they're well enough off without a faith.
Are you trying to say everyone NEEDS to have a faith or they're missing out on something?
Because if so you're the stupid and arrogant one.
Uh, no.
I'm saying a lot of people get comfortable or assume a whole lot (i.e. God is not important) and they just close themselves to religion and make assumptions because they often assume it cannot add anything to their lives. I'm not even recommending anything here.
Have we evolved or not. Seriously it's time to stop believing in fairy tales.
Atheists are just as equally annoying as theists. Seriously, you guys are not so different.
Atheists are just as equally annoying as theists. Seriously, you guys are not so different.
Other than the fact that atheists hold that you should have evidence to back up your beliefs and use a scientific and logical lens for all such matters.

Or that you feel the need to force your beliefs onto someone else.
