http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protestant_work_ethic ???
This is about religion in general, not just Christianity.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protestant_work_ethic ???
I think they mean "Oh who cares if the system is corrupt, or I'm not as wealthy as others, I'm gonna go to heaven where I'll live a perfect life".
On the topic of the Qu'ran it was written by Muhammad in the 9th century which was a very very extremely long time ago. It wasn't written as fact or any such thing it was written to be interrupted by YOU when YOU READ IT. Thus you have Osama Bin Laden and extremists who go 'Muhammad says this' when it is only there ignorant and obviously stupid thoughts of what he wrote. Although if you read the Qu'ran it is quite messed up. Even at the towards of the end of the book they state he had a 7 year old daughter ? Again you could argue that 'Oh thats the customs back in the day.' They still follow this same exact setup even TODAY. Religion takes us back a few thousand years instead of us taking us thousands of years forward. Same with the bible if you read the old Hebrew texts. They say that if you rape a woman you must marry her and pay her father goats ? Again even Christianity and Islam have the same things. Christianity is based off of Judaism. Islam is based off of Christianity.
I think they mean "Oh who cares if the system is corrupt, or I'm not as wealthy as others
Yeah, those are equally heinous.
Not all theology is completely off the wall. :)
No really, compared to some of the other batshit insane stuff people believe in, that's actually quite plausible.
"former atheist" You serious?
yeah i converted him to bjorkism. her recent music video only confirmed my beliefs that she is the actual manifestation of the sun goddess.
Yes, quite serious. I went from atheism to deism.
So the one that atheists claimed to be back when publicly admitting to being an atheist would get you shot
So the one that atheists claimed to be back when publicly admitting to being an atheist would get you shot
now now zeke satanism was the funny one. deists are just super romantic and there's really nothing wrong with that position considering we really can't quite prove god exists or doesn't exist 100%. that is until the physicists rule the galaxy and begin the 1000 Year Search for Power
that is until the physicists rule the galaxy and begin the 1000 Year Search for Power
word [editline]2nd November 2011[/editline] I believe the universe is just an atom in the body of a deity am I romantic yet
now now zeke satanism was the funny one.
My religious views are funny to you?
There are also studies that show reading the Bible makes you smarter and have a better work ethic (which makes sense because you're reading something long and complicated) Plus when you read how this study was done, it doesn't make much sense [editline]31st October 2011[/editline] Wow way to judge 90% of the world's population by saying they're not making a "decent decision" How arrogant can you get
It's not as much complicated as it is confusing and boring.
threads on FP about religion are always such a trainwreck. I don't necessarily believe having thoughts about God makes you a slacker, but I don't fully believe in God anyway. I do believe in a "higher power" or whatever though, and I see it as just something greater inside of me. I used to be a heroin addict and I detoxed and did the rehab and blah blah sad sob story. Anyway, in rehab and the twelve-step meetings I (still) attend they, at least in the ones I attended, didn't necessarily talk about finding "God", but believing in something greater than yourself, a higher power of sorts. And I guess I kinda did. Getting clean was a tremendous effort on my part, and addiction is a lifelong fight. I don't believe in 'God', but I do pray. Not in your typical "Thank you God for this and that, Amen, etc." type of praying, but I do. It helps clear my mind. Basically what I'm trying to say with all of this, it definitely hasn't made me a slacker. It helps me live my life, without the need to fuck off and get high. that's just my two cents about it, really.
My religious views are funny to you?
A comment I saw elsewhere summed up Satanism for me really well [release]Their rules are very cleverly written and designed to appeal to the broadest base possible. They could interpreted to mean do no harm to anyone or to completely fuck over everyone who steps in your way. They are designed to seem reasonable to the common man as well as allow violent antisocial behaviour to the more violent and selfish. For example, "If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat them cruelly and without mercy" this could mean anything from kick them out, to torture and murder them. "Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and they cry out to be relieved." This can mean anything from thy shalt not steal, to plunder the rich (their wealth is a "burden" to them" "Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal" This could mean never rape anyone ever, or it could mean rape anyone that looks sexy (and has therefore given a mating signal) "When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask them to stop. If they don’t stop, destroy them." This rule sounds reasonable on the surface but really is advocating murder for someone refusing to turn down a loud Ipod in public. Also remember that the Church of Satan is really just a commercial operation. For 200 bucks anyone can become a member and they give you a nice shiny card to impress your friends.[/release] I don't find it all that funny but I do find it kind of shallow and vague
A comment I saw elsewhere summed up Satanism for me really well
If you don't mind, I'd like to address some of these.
Their rules are very cleverly written and designed to appeal to the broadest base possible. They could interpreted to mean do no harm to anyone or to completely fuck over everyone who steps in your way. They are designed to seem reasonable to the common man as well as allow violent antisocial behaviour to the more violent and selfish.
We do not believe in harming people who neither deserve nor want to be harmed.
For example, "If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat them cruelly and without mercy" this could mean anything from kick them out, to torture and murder them.
We explicitly do not condone killing unless in defense, or to survive. The only case in which I could see any Satanist actually supporting the murder of another person would be if the person was in pain, and couldn't take their own life. Even then, I doubt many would take it lightly.
"Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and they cry out to be relieved." This can mean anything from thy shalt not steal, to plunder the rich (their wealth is a "burden" to them"
If I'm reading this correctly, this is trying to say that the quote could mean it's alright to steal from the rich, as their wealth is a burden. The thing is, that's disregarding the rest of the quote, "and they cry out to be relieved."
"Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal" This could mean never rape anyone ever, or it could mean rape anyone that looks sexy (and has therefore given a mating signal)
The original writings are a bit more theatrical, and tend to leave things a bit more open to interpretations, often incorrect. I could go on about how Satanism regards rape for quite a while, but there is a much better quote that handles this in the Satanic Bible (coincidentally, on page 69.) "Satanism encourages any form of sexual expression you may desire, so long as it hurts no one else."
"When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask them to stop. If they don’t stop, destroy them." This rule sounds reasonable on the surface but really is advocating murder for someone refusing to turn down a loud Ipod in public.
As I've said before, we don't believe in killing for such trivial reasons.
Also remember that the Church of Satan is really just a commercial operation. For 200 bucks anyone can become a member and they give you a nice shiny card to impress your friends.
Aside from those two words, yes. You can become an official member of the church for 200 dollars. I'm pretty sure this used to let you do things like help out in whatever local organization the church has, if there was one for your location. I don't know if they still do that, though. I don't know where you heard this from, but it's pretty obvious to me that they either don't know any Satanists, or didn't bother to confirm what they were saying.
