Definitely an improvement but whoever designed the first logo should've been fired. I think they should have really tried something new and more unique.

This is what logos should be.
The new logo sucks. It's so simple and bland it's forgettable. I have no idea why they felt the need to change it.
Who gives a shit if there's not much effort involved? A logo is a logo and if it does its job correctly then there's no reason to complain.
Don't see why they needed to change it, also it looks dumb.

This. Logos need to be unique, the old one was, the new one as shown can be easily replicated and is just TOO bland
For logos, this appears to be the age of simplicity.
Why did it need to change? It's like, they have this signature logo they've been using for all these years, then one day "oh, here's a new one, look at how modern we are".
The new logo is awful because of one simple thing:

The new logo is just "ebay" written in a sans serif font. The font itself looks good but as a logo it's just meh.
i don't like it. the right edge of the "e" clips the left edge of "b" but none of the other letters clip, it bothers me.

Except that looks really bad.
I'm not going to get all ~artsy~ and tell you its the "idea" behind the art, but it as long as it's nice looking who cares how much effort went into it?
A good example is the Nike logo. I could make that in <5 minutes in GIMP, but it's still a nice, simple logo.
There's one thing that shows to me that there wasn't much thought put into this logo;
All the colors have been changed. The red e has gotten slightly more red, the blue has gotten a lot brighter, the yellow slightly darker and the lime green got slightly more yellow.
So either someone just sat down and picked the colors by eye, or they had a large meeting where they analyzed exactly what to do with each individual color.
I actually do think the brighter blue makes a difference though... It makes it a lot more "fresh" which also seems to be a big god damn trend these days when it comes to logos.
