I think simplicity in logos is good but it also needs to be instantly recognizable. Kind of like Nike or something.
The multicolor and letters touching gives it a bit of unique identity but I think it could be taken further.
why did they leave no spaces between the letters
its called typography
The old one really does look kinda 90's "look our letters jump around"
the era of minimalist fonts and 4 flat colors
Too bland for my tastes.
the era of minimalist fonts and 4 flat colors
Most of the popular fonts you see in logos like Helvetica were created in the 40s and 50s. And they've been consistently used for decades.
Newer ones are usually just slight spins on those.

I like how people think logos are supposed to be complicated and some eyesore, no wonder they aren't corporate designers
They could at least have offset the letters a bit so it'd look more like the old one
it looks too simple in my opinion, I personally hate this trend of logos just being your company's name
what happened to creativity

I hope you realize that there is such a thing as oversimplification.

brilliant
This. Logos need to be unique, the old one was, the new one as shown can be easily replicated and is just TOO bland
The old one was one of the ugliest logos of the 21st century, I can't believe they kept it for so long. Who cares if it can be replicated, that's a fucking good thing for a logo.
I like the trend on minimalism that's been showing in design in the last few years.

Nope, the two the a's are two different shades of yellow. :eng101:
Just over the course of reading this thread I have already gone from hating it to thinking it's a-ok. I love it when logos do that.
I would want it to look a bit more personal and unique, but it does a good job as-is when you get used to it.
why did they leave no spaces between the letters
Says in the article. It represents the connectivity "Wenig said the new logo represents eBay's connected and diverse community". The tight kerning represents the connectivity. The colours represents the diversity.

You live up to your name by the way.
The difference is that your logo is terrible and theirs is functional.
What is it with everyone going for the minimalistic lowercase letters logo
I didn't see a problem with the old logo, but okay.

Everyone = ebay & Microsoft
This thread reminds me of my first year of art school where nobody understood anything.
Why did it need to change? It's like, they have this signature logo they've been using for all these years, then one day "oh, here's a new one, look at how modern we are".
If the old one was an effective logo then they wouldn't need to change it to look modern.
A good logo is timeless and their old one was just "Oh look, the 90s"
Everyone = ebay & Microsoft
microsoft changed their logo?
oh shit

I know I'm late but WHY
To be honest the old one looks like someone played with the transform tool in Photoshop.
While it definitely does look like that, everyone already recognizes it. The old Coke logo is really tacky but there's not a person on the planet that doesn't immediately know what it is.
Logos have very little importance if everyone already knows about them.

What? The Coca Cola logo is actually very well designed. It worked way back in the old days and it still holds up now as a nice script type-logo.
The old eBay logo just looks crappy with the differently warped letters.
So this is what the synergy, thinking outside the box, web 3.0 solution solutions get us nowadays.
Edit:

Oh snap better wear a suit when you go to Microsoft's place because they're all squares.
I liked the old logo. Shoulda kept it.
I do like the new simplicity of logos but the old logo had something in it that I loved, probably the scent of when the internet just came out
There goes another logo once sculpted on the verge of the Dot-Com bubble.
Changed the banner for my JTV channel.

Is it just me, or is the simplistic logo craze only related to computer-related things? (I'm saying computer due to ebay mainly being an online auction site)
jesus
No, I'm pretty sure creativity was around long after he died.
I like the new logo. Its simple and for some reason looks modern.
I mean the old logo is soo last decade.
