honest question: do you actually have a dinner table? i havent lived with anyone that has had one in my entire life. ive visited friends that had one but they never used it. ive never seen a family that actually sits together to eat
Yeah and I ate at the family dinner table every night for most of my life before my dad died. It was a part of our routine. Though, cell phones at the table never really mattered because like honestly, who cares.

The Dinner table means wherever a family sits to eat, while some people do have actual dining rooms that are usually reserved for special gatherings.

[editline]14th November 2015[/editline] i appreciate everyone elses answeres too btw

Seems like the sort of thing I'd expect from a family where everyone just sort of ignores one another.
maybe they just dont want to talk to you. i have more than a few coworkers that i havent made eye-contact with in months because idc what theyre talking about, but they just keep yapping on. ill just play on my phone and let them talk until one of us has to leave
jesus do you realize having an attitude like that makes everyone think you're a colossal cunt [editline]14th November 2015[/editline] like how can you keep doing that and function at work
"A family that almost never eats together, or that never speaks at the table but looks at the television or the smartphone, is hardly a family,"
Why do people think its so bad to not sit at the table and eat? Do you interact with your family so little that you have to force yourselves to talk for 30 minutes every day to be more than hardly a family?

Often I would go to school in afternoon and come home after 8PM, and my parents worked in the morning, so we would not really see much of each other for the whole week. This probably happens often with families where both parents work and kids have school and stuff.

I love going out to a restaurant and seeing the little kids at another table with an iPhone and headphones watching some cartoon or youtube video while their parents eat in silence. When I have kids, they can have a handheld console like a Nintendo 3DS (or whatever they'll have then), but no touch screens until they're like, 13 or 14, because I think touch screens make kids retarded. they can have a dumb phone until then [editline]14th November 2015[/editline]
That seems extremely alien, I've never known a family that does that, why wouldn't you eat together? Seems like the sort of thing I'd expect from a family where everyone just sort of ignores one another.
My family doesn't eat together often because we have different schedules. I'm often at school or work, my stepmom gets home late, my dad is on some medications that don't make him hungry around dinner time. At my mom's house, it's just me an my mom and if we do eat together we just eat while watching game of thrones or something. Family isn't that important to me as an abstract concept. My parents and my brothers are important to me, but not because they're blood; because I like them as people. My cousins or my uncles and aunts? Don't give a shit.
Me using my phone doesn't make me not present in the moment.
Bullshit dude, total bullshit. Have you ever actually had a family dinner when people aren't using their fucking phones? It's great, it's some of the best experiences I've had. When people are on their phones, its boring, short lived, and tends to have one conversation between 2 people.
I bet the pope has an Android
Don't be so blasphemous. Thy holiness only equips a Palm V.
This seems a hell of a lot like advice one gives instead of follows I wonder how many people in this thread actually sit down around a dinner table every night and don't use phones or watch tv or anything, I wonder how many of you have ate dinner at your computer, or watched tv during it, or read a book, in the past month or so
I live by myself so do I get a pass for eating at my computer?
do you even have friends dude
its kind of a joke that youre trying to say i dont have friends bc i work when im at work. are ya'll a bunch of slackers that just chit chat while youre at work? how is it even a problem that my intention at work is to do my job. when i want to have fun, i tend to do that at places that arent work
We always eat at the TV in the living room. We still tight as fuck

I always enjoy conversation. But perhaps I come from a different age.

Because I don't want to talk and they keep trying anyway as if they're going to change it. They won't take no for an answer.
Enjoy your food and be present in the moment. You can do that later.
Talking to your family and sharing pictures and articles is still being present in the moment, and it doesn't detract from how you enjoy your food. The only reason I can see this as holding any ground is if it were treated like manners, like putting your elbow on the table. It's like you guys think dinner time is the only time you're with your family. If that is the case, then I doubt someone would be buried into the internet anyway.
It obviously all comes down to what the expectations of your current social group are. It's impossible to boil down social etiquette to "x is always okay" or "x is always bad". Some days you'll be with a group of people where everyone is on their phone, other days you'll be with people who would be completely appalled by it. If you're the kind of person who is either always upset by it or always doing it then you probably don't understand how social interaction works very well. And I don't exactly set the bar very high, here.
