A boat considered unsinkable ran into an iceberg. Such useful knowledge.
Being able to distinct reality from fiction is actually what's at focus here. People are starting religions based on The Matrix and Cthulhu... hanging themselves over Twilight and Pandora. Now they're starting to think of real history as fiction. It's clear signs of deteriorating historical awareness and awareness of reality. It's bad and it creates volatile amounts of stupid. IMO a person who came into a group and thought this was fictional, however cruel this might seem, should be the laughing stock... or at least told the truth, because being ignorant breeds more ignorance and it results in shitstorms that could be averted. There's a reason why our civilization works... at least Europe. That's because we're not just going forward, we're also looking back at what worked for the Romans, Greeks, Persians and Egyptians and what didn't work for them. Your logic would have us repeat major mistakes. If that sinking was disregarded or forgotten, some dumbfuck captain or liner company will start drowning second and third class passengers again. Religious groups and social deviants will be exterminated just cause and we won't ever progress. How would you feel if we never progressed from here? "I just lost faith in humanity" suddenly becomes a viable potential response. However, Yes. The reactions to this are extreme. But let's just wait and see your ass get offended when someone thinks 9/11 was just a satirical act in like 50 years. That's what i can see as justification to peoples hysterically over the top reactions. Fear of regression as a result of ignorance. We already have enough Baptist spreading the "back to the dark ages" mentality.
My friend really wanted to see titanic and then about a day before she was going to see it she realised it had a boat in, which they're scared of...
Sorry, I have to admit I had to Google this one. EDIT: Wait, that didn't help at all.
Well. In regards to him, he's actually out of place in my list since all he accomplished was the worlds highest killstreak. He became a folk hero... The only thing i could imagine his actions influenced was sniper tactics, but that's about it. Anne Frank brought home a sense of reality of the life of a Jew during the war. She has had a huge impact in the post-war years when it comes to sympathy towards Jews. If someone wants you to feel bad about WW2, the first thing they throw at you is her, next up is the kid experiments by mengele. Huge influence. Imagine if people just forgot Buddha over night. or Gandhi. Holy fuck, we'd be on our ass since Jesus' philosophical teachings are largely based on Buddhist teachings and Gandhi is based on both of those philosophies and THEN some more. Mother Theresa would never have been.

You're implying that their perception of history is different (which it is, but that doesn't apply here). My logic is not that "history is useless", I'm just saying that, compared to other historical facts, the sinking of the Titanic is quite trivial.
My logic is not that "history is useless", I'm just saying that, compared to other historical facts, the sinking of the Titanic is quite trivial.
I wouldn't say it was trivial. Some of the standards and regulations we have today are a direct result of the sinking. Sure it may not be as big or important as say WW2 or the Civil Rights movement but to wright it off a trivial just seems wrong to me. As has been already pointed out:
It's a study in human arrogance, engineering marvels and failures, and the class separation of the time. It's a helluva lot more than "just a ship."
And there is more to it than even that.
This kind of ignorance isn't really new, it's just now the internet exists they can broadcast their ignorance to the entire world.
This kind of ignorance isn't really new, it's just now the internet exists they can broadcast their ignorance to the entire world.
What the hell? I didn't know people my age were so fucking retarded.
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt." -Abraham Lincoln A lot of people could stand to learn from that.
Unless we're talking about an esoteric or technically complicated field where only a small group of people are qualified to speak on, this aphorism is absolutely meaningless and one where only insecure people would abide by in conventional social situations. It basically implies that you should never speak your mind since there's always a chance that you're wrong, which in itself is a ridiculously absurd reason to never engage in discussion. Even if people were shamed into not spouting their unfounded beliefs, they would just get lazy and refuse to perform any research beforehand at all. At least with those who freely express their views, discussion can follow and they have a chance to debate, leading to more intellectual growth. I personally find that a lot more beneficial than just sitting with your arms crossed and obsequiously nodding your head to whatever the other asshole is saying.
What the hell? I didn't know people my age were so fucking retarded.
When did it become common to call someone an idiot because they paid attention to other things? Since when have young people EVER LISTENED TO HISTORY!?
I guess you could say they didn't give a ship about school.
How the fuck can you not know that? That's like not knowing that World War 2 was a real thing.
We read "Night" by Elie Wiesel in eighth grade. One girl had no idea that the holocaust actually happened until we had already finished the book.
When did it become common to call someone an idiot because they paid attention to other things? Since when have young people EVER LISTENED TO HISTORY!?
FP is full of smart nerds who hold themselves above everyone. Not getting laid, but at least I know history, right?
FP is full of smart nerds who hold themselves above everyone. Not getting laid, but at least I know history, right?
that doesn't fucking matter
that doesn't fucking matter
neither does knowing that the movie titanic was based on real events
FP is full of smart nerds who hold themselves above everyone. Not getting laid, but at least I know history, right?
Not really, the titanic is fairly common knowledge, lat least were I live it is any way.
I used to go to school with kids who didn't even know what D-Day was all about, this really comes as no surprise to me.
I used to go to school with kids who didn't even know what D-Day was all about, this really comes as no surprise to me.
Not knowing what D-Day is or why it happend is something I can accept. Not knowing that the goddamned Titanic was real just baffles me.
No. They just didn't know. You're implying that their perception of history is different (which it is, but that doesn't apply here). My logic is not that "history is useless", I'm just saying that, compared to other historical facts, the sinking of the Titanic is quite trivial.
It's EXTREMELY trivial. It only just served as a partial catalyst in improving boat engineering and SOCIAL CLASS HIERARCHY. Nothing of value here... nope. It was a step towards getting rid of the Indian caste system equivalent in Europe. Where we see persons drowning, they chose money over lives and just thought of it as "ridding themselves of the rats".
I used to go to school with kids who didn't even know what D-Day was all about, this really comes as no surprise to me.
When I was in school, someone had no idea who won WW2. and then her friend asked the teacher if WW2 was the one that lasted for 5 days. Must have been around 15 years old then.

What troubles me is that in elementary school everyone knew these things. Now all the sudden in 2012 people are clueless.
FP is full of smart nerds who hold themselves above everyone. Not getting laid, but at least I know history, right?
Can you or anyone explain to me why intelligence is frowned upon? Anyone at all? If not, get over yourself.
Can you or anyone explain to me why intelligence is frowned upon?
This is exactly what I was referring to earlier. In a lot of cases intelligence is frowned upon in the sense that your social standing is somehow worse. Just look at what there as an example, somehow being smart means you won't get laid, why is this? Why is being smart something that means your relationships should fail or that you have no friends? Why shouldn't we be able to expect someone to know simple history?
lol your perceived intelligence does not make up for your social ineptitude, if that's what you're getting at
I'm just addressing a rather sad stereotype. I hardly consider myself to be extremely intelligent.
I was raised on watching documentaries since I was a kid so knowing that Titanic was real isn't really something hard since they covered it almost every year
By eating them, right? Right!?
no clearly she stuffs them up her nose [editline]14th April 2012[/editline]
Not knowing what D-Day is or why it happend is something I can accept. Not knowing that the goddamned Titanic was real just baffles me.
Weird, WWII has appeared in way more mediums than Titanic.
They should have the US strategic nuclear stockpile, launch a missile at the coordinates of whoever posts one of those "OMG TITANIC IS REAL?" idiots.
Don't blame the kids, blame the education system.
As I said earlier, you cannot educate someone that can't or won't listen.
Then blame the parents for bad parenting.
Or maybe blame the kid for being an ignorant douche? Sometimes the blame lies with, you know, the actual person.
Can you or anyone explain to me why intelligence is frowned upon? Anyone at all? If not, get over yourself.
Yes I can actually. It's frowned upon because of the smart stupid people who go batshit if someone else isn't as smart in that particular field. Someone doesn't know about a historic event? Omg they're idiots worthless trash. This is the problem. Smart people do not act like that. They either educate or stay silent. Attacking someone for not knowing something is just silly and makes just as much of a moron. You might be some kind of uber scientist but if you act like a kid you get no respect from me. People who need to point out their intelligence or knowledge are usually the insecure ones who lack in something else, often a girlfriend.
