I was reading huge picture books on the Titanic by first grade, I have no hope for the generations under me.
Actually there's nothing wrong with the eventual forgetting of the Titanic, it just will simply become lost in history, such as everything in history.
Not knowing what D-Day is or why it happend is something I can accept. Not knowing that the goddamned Titanic was real just baffles me.
Yeah, the only way I learned about D-Day was from Medal of Honor and Call of Duty 2, literally just learned more about it after watching The Longest Day.
These are very selective tweets, I just went through loads of pages of twitter searching for Titanic and I didn't find any of these kind of tweets.
Yes I can actually. It's frowned upon because of the smart stupid people who go batshit if someone else isn't as smart in that particular field. Someone doesn't know about a historic event? Omg they're idiots worthless trash. This is the problem. Smart people do not act like that. They either educate or stay silent. Attacking someone for not knowing something is just silly and makes just as much of a moron. You might be some kind of uber scientist but if you act like a kid you get no respect from me. People who need to point out their intelligence or knowledge are usually the insecure ones who lack in something else, often a girlfriend.
I'm not following your logic. It's not elitist or morally superior to express total bafflement over the fact that these people do not know the Titanic, given how significant the event was. It's talked about so often that it's almost comparable to someone not knowing how World War II went down in even a basic capacity. If we were talking about the precise amount of venom present in a Black Widow spider or something, I'd be right up in agreement with you, but this is basic history that, quite frankly, everyone should at least be aware of. Insulting the opposing side by essentially going "Hurr durr smart people don't get girlfriends" is not a good way to help your argument. Does your school system handle the event differently?
How is titanic sinking a significant event at all? Means jack shit and you're not a worse person if you don't know about it.
How is titanic sinking a significant event at all? Means jack shit and you're not a worse person if you don't know about it.
You haven't been listening very well, have you?
It's a study in human arrogance, engineering marvels and failures, and the class separation of the time. It's a helluva lot more than "just a ship."

It only just served as a partial catalyst in improving boat engineering and SOCIAL CLASS HIERARCHY. Nothing of value here... nope. It was a step towards getting rid of the Indian caste system equivalent in Europe. Where we see persons drowning, they chose money over lives and just thought of it as "ridding themselves of the rats".
If you're bound and determined to remain ignorant or uncaring about the whole event, then there's not much I or anyone else can say. But don't dismiss history simply because you don't give a rat's ass about it. That's how we forget and start repeating mistakes that we shouldn't.
FP is full of smart nerds who hold themselves above everyone. Not getting laid, but at least I know history, right?
This is the internet. I thought it was pretty obvious that we're all nerds.
This is the internet. I thought it was pretty obvious that we're all nerds.
Minus the fuckers who are all "OMGLOLIMSUCHANERD" ironically
What a bunch of retards. I hate kids.
shut up gramps
This is the internet. I thought it was pretty obvious that we're all nerds.
And I thought we had all gotten over using "NERD!!!" as an insult. Guess there's still some growing up to do.
Please don't associate me with these idiots just because I'm 13.
These people are so ignorant and retarded on titanic proportions.
And I thought we had all gotten over using "NERD!!!" as an insult. Guess there's still some growing up to do.
It's because Facepunch is mostly populated by alpha as fuck studs who get all the girls and have extremely good social skills.
Next they're going to try to tell me that Saving Private Ryan actually happened...
It did, didn't it?
How the fuck are people this dumb to think the Titanic is fake? IT COMES ON INTERNATIONAL TELEVISION EVERY FUCKING YEAR FOR A REASON YOU DUMBFUCKS!!
FP is full of smart nerds who hold themselves above everyone. Not getting laid, but at least I know history, right?
Implying you need to be smart to know that the Titanic existed. Implying you have to be socially inept if you're smart. Get over yourself.
What a bunch of retards. I hate kids.
Whoa, now! That's a pretty broad generalization. Not all of us are morons. Granted about half the kids at my school are degenerates that wouldn't know shit from a shot. The rest of us know stuff like the Titanic and the Holocaust and World War II happened.
How is titanic sinking a significant event at all? Means jack shit and you're not a worse person if you don't know about it.
It's an iconic part of history. The point is it's hard to miss.
How is titanic sinking a significant event at all? Means jack shit and you're not a worse person if you don't know about it.
I think if you forget about what happened, history is bound repeat itself. We wouldn't want another Titanic, now would we?
I'm 21, and I did a report about the Titanic in sixth grade. My brother's friends didn't know it was real, I wanted to slap them and castrate them so they could never reproduce.

There was two paragraphs on the Eastern Front, and a paragraph on the British war effort. Nothing is given to France, Canada or China other than "French surrendered did nothing, Canada=UK and China communists also nationalists also civil war". No, this is not an exaggeration. This was a world history textbook by the way.
am i the only person who does not give a shit? my little sister who is 13 is obsessed with the titanic movie because she makes us watch it over and over again and she knows it's based on a real event because my dad made sure she knows it has nothing to do with this 'current' generation it's just ignorant or uninformed people
it has nothing to do with this 'current' generation it's just ignorant or uninformed people
Well, that's kind of what's disturbing some of us. As I said earlier, if it wasn't for the film's existence it would probably make a lot more sense for people to not know what the Titanic is. But given the immense popularity of the film and how much coverage it's gotten (not only for itself but also for the actual disaster), it's actually a little scary to think that there are people out there who have seen it and don't realize that the Titanic was actually a real thing.
Please tell me they are trolling.. There have been several documentaries over the years on visiting the titanic underwater and I think at the beginning or end of the very film it says that it was based on the true titanic event. I wonder if these people even noticed the incredible scene of the captain taking responsibilities for disregarding iceberg warnings and sinking with the boat like a man or if these people's senses can merely register a guy with a cute face or a woman who wasn't even that hot simply because they have a hollywood sign slapped across their faces. It is impossible not to extract all sorts of conclusions out of almost every scene of the movie and you are almost forced to think about it years later when events like the Costa Concordia happen. · · · — — — · · ·
Don't blame the kids, blame the education system.
It's a combo of both. Take last week in my math class. We were learning how to divide polynomials ( (2x² - 6x + 3) ÷ (x + 1) for instance). My teacher mentioned that it was pretty much long division. Almost the entire class asked "what's long division?" It turns out that only three kids in there knew how to do long division - the two kids who went to private school, and me after my mom went ballistic because nobody taught me long division. This is because of public education being horrible. So the teacher went and taught long division (after a brief "what the hell are the elementary schools doing" rant). After that, only three kids didn't get it - the guy who spaces out every 30 seconds, the kid who needs everything explained to him twice (and once we explained it again he got it), and little miss "Fuck all of you I do what I want". In that case it's the kid's fault and education systems can't do shit except give them a failing grade.
ignorance in humanity. This is why i'm upset with people, i want to slap each and everyone of those people for being dumb
Wasn't there that report about children being able to flawlessly identify every single pokemon from a picture, but not being able to name some farm animals?
I can't grasp any other word but "How". Things like this make me lose hope in humanity. [editline]19th April 2012[/editline] I learnt about this shit when I was 5 years old How are these people almost 18 and have no idea fuck
