If they don't reproduce, and it is passed on genetically, like you implied, then it dies out. And there are plenty of useless parts left over from your evolution. For example, pinky toes. You don't need them at all for balance now, but one of your ancestors did. The only theory involving genetics with proper evidence that I can think of is that there are two genes that produce a high rate of homosexuality in males and increased fertility in females. This gene actually increases the birth rate under that theory, hence why it still exists. Practically all of the time, it's against the consent of the child. Basically, rape. Bestiality. Same as pedophilia, it's non-consensual. The animal cannot give it's permission. If incest only happens for a single generation, or even two, it's not going to cause too much trouble. Prolonged incest causes quite a bit of trouble, but short term isn't terrible. The main flaw with incest is that it prevents genetic diversity, which eventually can result in weaker immune systems, as well as the increased prevalence of negative mutations. The negative mutation prevalence is terrible, however the weakened immune system is largely knocked out by the fact that we are in a modernized society medically. So essentially, that's not as much of an issue as people make it out to be.
