who the fuck uses any of these three nowadays? I fucking love Steam, it's because of them that my shelf isn't full of retail boxes. Besides, they claimed they have a panic switch that allows every game you bought on Steam to be played without it incase of emergencies, such as the company finally shutting down.
Steam is the only thing holding EA down by it's head... other than EA itself. Go Steam! Steam's also never been a problem for me, other than when it first came around
EA has games on Steam... /facepalm [editline]02:55AM[/editline]
who the fuck uses any of these three nowadays?
EA has games on Steam... /facepalm [editline]02:55AM[/editline] What do you mean by "finally shutting down"?
Companies cannot last forever can they? If they shut down, Steam possibly shuts down, making us unable to play games we bought for. So in an interview, they apparently created a panic button to make all games on all accounts playable without steam
Steam isn't bad, it just needs more love, more bugfixes.
Bought 2 games a while back, had well over recommended for both of them. One wouldn't download period, their link was broken. Took a week of talking to them before they finally fixed it. Then the other one, the download worked, I got it downloaded and it wouldn't install right because it thought it had already been installed or some bullshit. It's just fucking retarded, stick to steam.
The only time I used D2D was when they did the 5 dollar deal, Got a few games, including one that fucked up my PC :argh: However playing GRAW 2 was pretty tight.
I couldn't care less about D2D, I get shit download speeds from it anyways and I haven't tested Impulse yet. Gamersgate on the other hand usually has good prices and it downloads at my max speed nearly all the time. I'll buy a physical copy anyways, I can't stand Steam's extremely slow downloads (at the releases at least, the bigger the slower) that remind me of 1999 and it also costs nearly 25€ more than a physical copy. [editline]09:23AM[/editline]
Steam isn't bad, it just needs more love, more bugfixes.
I'd be happy with better (or more) download servers for it, if you buy a big game (or even just a medium one) during it's release you'll get shit speeds (sometimes so low that it shows in bytes per second). That's the only thing that really dissuades me from buying from Steam (that and the prices).
Yeah downloading big games over steam is not always the best.
Yeah downloading big games over steam is not always the best.
Unless you preloaded it, true that.
I use Direct2Drive whenever possible over steam for the simple fact that you don't need to be online to play your games, and my gaming system is a laptop that I am frequently traveling with, so I like access to my games to be unconditional. I think requiring the use of Steam for any game is a bad decision, but there are plenty of times that I do appreciate Steam and this is probably a bad business decision for these other retailers. The sales of Modern Warfare 2 would probably exceed sales lost to Steam due to exposing it to customers.
I use Direct2Drive whenever possible over steam for the simple fact that you don't need to be online to play your games.
I thought this only happens to games developed by Valve?
I thought this only happens to games developed by Valve?
It depends on how tight the game is integrated with steam.
I would be pissed if Steam wan't selling a game because it was Direct2Drive Only, so I guess I see their point.
Well you can't log in to steam in Offline mode, so unless you keep your computer on, you won't be able to access any Steam games at all. Unfortunately, keeping your laptop powered on 24/7 is usually bad for it. Lost my last laptop due to leaving it on for an excessive period of time.
I can see why they are doing that, I wouldn't like to distribute a competitors platform as well. Calling it a trojan horse is stuipd though.
Wait, so they're trying to hurt valve by pulling out of the market themselves?
Just enable password storing in Steam and it will let you use the program in the Offline mode, even after a computer reboot.
Offline mode never works for me, even when Steam is configured correctly, but I understand that my individual experience is not indicative of how others experience Steam, so there may just be a problem on my end.
Offline mode never works for me, even when Steam is configured correctly, but I understand that my individual experience is not indicative of how others experience Steam, so there may just be a problem on my end.
Nah, Offline mode sometimes work for me, sometimes it doesn't. It's a 50/50. But when I do get on offline mode, I can play every game I own except Valve games I like to go online for one quick second, Login Steam online, then disconnect while being on Steam. Bam, no pesky "You need to be online to run this game" messages
Just enable password storing in Steam and it will let you use the program in the Offline mode, even after a computer reboot.
Perhaps there's a way to do it, but this method and every other thing I've tried has failed, I'm afraid. [editline]01:08AM[/editline]
Log onto steam, run games that you want to play offline, job done.
You can't log in to steam without an internet connection, that's the entire problem.
I've heard of direct to drive, but what are impulse and gamersgate? This is the first time I've even heard of them. Ok who the hell changed my avatar... Which mod changed my avatar? Fixed.
I've heard of direct to drive, but what are impulse and gamersgate? This is the first time I've even heard of them.
Me too. I just figure that the fact that nobody has told me about them means they're probably shit. If nobody cares, why should I?
So they want to make a point by removing Steam's competition? That'll show them!
That's just silly, they know they'll make a profit if they do.
Direct2Drive is shit i can't buy anything on there keeps giving me a gdamn error contacted them and they don't care at least i can buy from Steam
Impulse is pretty good. Like steam but way less restrictive on DRM. I use it for my Galactic Civ games and Sins of a Solar empire otherwise its steam Last time I checked you can duel log on a Impulse account with a friend. They only care if its starts numbering in the hundreds
Direct2Drive is shit i can't buy anything on there keeps giving me a gdamn error contacted them and they don't care at least i can buy from Steam
That's uh... unusual. Never had any problem with D2D, never received less than my maximum download speed, and any time a game with DRM gave me shit about activation limits, they gave me a key with unlimited uses. Guess it just goes to show how much consumer experiences can differ.
Steam is quite simply the best gaming 'platform' available. I don't think I've bought a game from GameStop in over 3 years, and I've never bought a game from D2D or Impulse. Hell, I've never even heard of Gamersgate. They all sound about as useful as EA Download Manager. Keep in mind they're outdated as well! Missing Left 4 Dead 2 and Shattered Horizon.
Who cares? D2D is shit and I don't know anyone who uses it. Everyone I know who purchases copies of games from an online marketplace uses Steam or Xbox Live, and everyone else buys their shit from a store like normal people.
D2D doesn't overprice stuff in regions that use euros instead of dollars.
D2D doesn't overprice stuff in regions that use euros instead of dollars.
That's a completely legitimate concern. However, D2D is still shit compared to driving five minutes to the store and purchasing an actual working copy of the game that is guaranteed to be completely compatible with all updates and mods and what have you.
