Steam has been great in the 4 or so years I've used it, it's handy to keep all your games updated, it's crashed a few times but nothing unusual. However, I don't think you should have Steam installed just to play a game which you didn't even buy via Steam. EA aren't even publishing MW2, so I don't even understand why Steam should be involved.
I'm guessing they're using Steam because it allows them to issue patches easily to their customers automatically, provides decent DRM that (I personall, find) isn't particulary intrusive and also supports mods, and also includes tools for multiplayer gaming (although IW has been a let down on that account). Steam is a pretty good distrubution platform, and I can see why developers would (and do) use it.
In This Article: People bitch about how Steam is better than them
Yeah, that bit floored me. Just because it's a competing service doesn't mean you can slander it like that. I mean, yeah, I hate Steam just as much as the next guy. It's fast, lightweight, looks pretty good, and I love how it doesn't slow your games down. But you have to deal with it if you like any of Valve's games, and its advantages completely outweigh its few minor negative aspects, so I think calling it a 'trojan horse' is a bit extreme.
Fixed
Watch out for that god damned steam pipe.
