Their next console needs to be powerful and actually able to compete if they want to be the hardcore people.
Their next console needs to be powerful and actually able to compete if they want to be the hardcore people.
Not all gamers are graphics whores.
I'm not a graphics whore either, I love my Wii U and 3DS, but it needs the third parties on board and I don't think they are coming on board unless they can easily provide the experience that they want the players to have with their game, which a lot of the time involves the hardware.

Third-parties are a different matter, but considering the Wii U is basically onpar / minorly superior to both the 360 and PS3, even ports of big multiplat games of the generation shouldn't really be that difficult towards the console besides hardware differences. And since everyone and their mother is going to keep doing multiplat releases until the PS4 and Xbone fully take over for the next gen, it's more so Nintendo's business practices at work and the third parties trying to burn down their ship before they leave just because.

PS2 vs. GameCube proved that Nintendo having the upper hand in power won't make a difference, and the recent situation with the Night Trap devs shows just what kind of grudges some third-parties hold towards them from things that happened decades ago. Even if the Nintendo 7 turns out to be on-par with the Xbox 4 and PlayStation 5, it won't make a damn bit of difference. That's part of why I think "crawling back" would be a naïve decision on Nintendo's part. They tried going for the core with the GameCube and people only cared enough to mourn the system years after the point where their support would've actually meant something. Same thing happened with the N64, and it's starting all over again with the Wii where so many gamers who avoided it like the plague are now realizing, "Hey, this actually had a good library! Guess I missed out during its heyday." Personally, I've come to accept Nintendo systems being systems for just Nintendo stuff and games like it, such as Sonic and Mega Man. That's what they're good at, and there'll always be an audience for that stuff. I've got my PC for anything else.
I just really hope they make a new F-Zero game. They've been taunting us with Captain Falcon in smash, and now an f-zero track and the blue falcon in Mario Kart... ;_;
Trouble is, the install base isn't big enough because there isn't enough third party support.
A vicious cycle. Some bad marketing ideas and a terrible name, and the Wii U doesn't sell well. Third parties abandon the Wii U because it doesn't sell well. Nintendo tries to alter the Wii U to sell better, and it minorly does and the third parties trickle back, and then abandon it again because they have people on the PS4 and Xbone to exploit- I mean sell to instead. All while abandoning all their ports and products on the Wii U and leaving people with shit in the process.
At least Sonic 06 wrote itself out of canon and is consistent with the character's existing personalities. I honestly feel that Metroid: Other M is more of a blight on its respective series than Sonic 06 and Shadow The Hedgehog combined.
Idk I mean it's pretty consistent with how the story was outlined in Metroid Fusion
Trouble is, the install base isn't big enough because there isn't enough third party support.
If only we could find a way to hype the system up over something insubstantial that'll have players buying it in droves without actually considering if it has any games yet and generate a massive install base that third-parties will flock to with little effort on our part. Quick, did Microsoft do anything stupid recently that we can brag about how we didn't do that thing for the following year?
The Install base is a cheap excuse. Xbone has an even lower install base and it looks like it will continue to struggle while the PS4 is selling like crazy for reasons that not even Sony understands. A main issue for third parties is the very different hardware architecture of the WiiU. Sucessfully porting a Game to run smooth on WiiU, even a last gen one, requires some seriouse ammount of work and therefor money. Something that Publishers don't like to invest if they don't have a guarantee that the game will sell. On PS4 and Xbone, they finally can quick and easy put the PC version with some minor adjustments onto the system and it will run. Less porting costs means more money for them. Another reason is, that they cannot expect the same ammount of sales on a Nintendo Console like on a MS or Sony console, simply because their target group on these systems is smaller and lots of WiiU owners have multiple systems (WiiU only for exclusive Games) and buy the games for one of the other plattforms. In terms of install base, the Wii should have been number one choice for every third party developer/publisher last generation, but still ppl didn't buy their games on the system and prefered PS360 for the so called "mature games". As for Miyamotos statement, i think he didn't exactly refer to the casual/core thing. IMO he just said he'll continue to develop games that focus on Gameplay and challenge rather then Story driven entertainment. A lot of modern games are more like a mixture of movies with a few interactive passages to justify calling them games. You play them once for the story and then never touch them again. And you don't need to, because within the next 12 months there will be the next game of the series released.
Trouble is, the install base isn't big enough because there isn't enough third party support.
Except Nintendo systems haven't had a lot of third party support in decades. Ever since the SNES they have had a bad relationship with third parties. Sony and the third console developers (both SEGA and Microsoft to different degrees) have been more open to cooperation with third parties. Why would a third party developer work with Nintendo? They're not open to developers, they don't give out development kits easily, and their platform is lagging behind the competition despite having a year head start. Nintendo in the past pushed developers away, which was fine because they could support themselves, people who buy Nintendo consoles buy them primarily for Nintendo games. But these days Nintendo has been changing to match the times, but they still have the bad blood they built with people in the past. It isn't the horrible third parties who refuse to work with poor innocent Nintendo, it's developers who were burned or shut out by Nintendo in the past refusing to work with them now that Nintendo are willing to adapt.
Despite the big amount of lives you get, games like 3D World are still very challenging.
And even then, you can save your progress and you get unlimited continues, so there's no reason to bother with risking your life for a 1-up.
Doesn't help that the sarcmark isn't as commonly used as something like an exclamation point or question mark, but hey, no-one really needs to know whether you're being sarcastic or not Also, Other M was probably just a fever dream caused by Samus falling asleep on the TV remote, from which she woke up, peeled the remote off her cheek and said "Oh thank god, I thought I turned into a complete pussy", before having breakfast and jetting off to fight Space Pirates and zombies. They should probably just put that bit in at the start as an apology for the nonsense that occurred when they had Team Ninja do it. And yes, that waking up from the TV remote thing, followed by that quip, was from The Venture Bros. (A Very Venture Christmas, to be precise)
It bothers me how everyone blames Team Ninja, when Sakamoto was the writer, director, and producer. Team Ninja probably had a small bit to play but I would think that the guy who wrote, directed, and produced it would be like "hey guys this story is absolute garbage," if some other company came in and shat all over his vision.
I was playing some Wii U recently at demo booths and I've gotta say, I really really want one. It's got some great games made by Nintendo now like Mario Kart 8 and Zelda HD, plus they're promising real games soon like Starfox and Zelda U. There's also Splatoon which looks like a nice breath of fresh air, and fucking Super Mario 3D World makes my game-design boner touch the heavens. Plus, I really want to develop on the platform. The idea of two screens didn't appeal to me at first, but now I really want to make a game using it since they have such an open indie platform if you're using Unity (which I do.) I think Nintendo has been one of the best companies for games as of late. They've been the most consistent, and therefore producing the most solid gameplay experiences.
Someone did a breakdown a while ago and Other M contradicts plot elements from literally every single other game in the series, it's either not canon or it's the ONLY canon game in the series. It's self-contained because it has to be for the series to make sense.
Do you have a link? I'd like to know that it's a self controlled blight of a game.
Do you have a link? I'd like to know that it's a self controlled blight of a game.
"The Prime Trilogy can't be canon, since she had missions from and with the GF, which she supposedly broke all ties with in Other M. Once Samus defeated Mother Brain, Other M says the Space Pirates should've reverted to basically being like animals, and couldn't possibly have done all the science-stuff they did for reviving Kraid and Ridley and such for Super Metroid, or done the stuff they did during the stealth-sections of Zero Mission, so they're not canon either. The way Other M claims how the suit works negates the events that kicked off Fusion, so again, it's no longer able to be canon. Other M's plot involved "breeding out" the cold vulnerability of Metroids, which Metroid II says occurs naturally from beta-radiation-induced evolution - guess that makes Metroid II non-canonical too." The only game that can exist alongside Other M is the very first one, but not its remake.
This explains the Mario Kart DLC. Soon we'll see Mountain Dew and Doritios tie ins in Smash. Just you wait.
Yeah, the common variant of lives is more of a relic from the time of arcades and not saving your progress beyond a scoreboard. Unlimited continues is the way, though perhaps having a Contra-style of lives in-stage, allowing you to pick up where you died, would work out. The way said system would work is that you have a number of lives in that stage, consuming a life every time you die whilst reviving you on the spot, and when you run out of lives you get booted to the stage select screen or the start of the stage, however the level system works. Also lives would be rarer and more precious as opposed to being able to gather 99 of the damn things on a good day.
No extra lives left used to mean "game over" and now you have to start the entire game back from square one, something I'm pretty sure not a lot of people miss from old games. Back during those days people were obsessed with gathering extra lives in the easiest way possible just so they could prevent that possibility that all their progress would be lost. I much prefer the systems of "If you die you have to restart the level", "If you die you have to restart from your latest save point", or "if you die, which you will about 30 times in the next minute, you'll re-spawn instantly nearby". Worrying about gathering a large number of collectible items to not lose your games progress isn't fun or very challenging, it's just tedious.
