doesnt riot/lol streamers viewbot their streams
but ya, espn is huge shit. full hype
That's pretty cool. I think any game with a large competitive following can benefit from any sort of e-sports exposure, even if that exposure is from a rival game.
"oh cool, dota 2 is gonna be on espn. i'm more of a lol fan but this is great for every esport, let's see if other people are as happy as i am"
first three posts already bashing on riot
pay to win means there's an unfair advantage for people who can buy things over people that need to grind for them
that's pay to win by definition
if the free hero pool excluded hero counters and you were able to buy an expensive hero that affects the overall gameplay that's kinda unfair, using the "you can grind" excuse is pretty bullshit
except riot actually tries to balance every hero so that you won't get an advantage if you buy a more expensive one
Yeah that's cuz we have a full-featured in-game live spectating and replay system that has DVR-like time controls and benefits for spectating games through the client.
Of course we don't watch it with plebian video streaming with compression and shit.
uh
league has that too
some people just like commentary?
[editline]17th July 2014[/editline]
honestly this is nothing but good for both games, there's gonna be all kinds of 1upping happening and im more than happy to see more esports coverage!
except riot actually tries to balance every hero so that you won't get an advantage if you buy a more expensive one
only after 2 (3 if you count closed beta) years of releasing op (and expensive) champions only to nerf them a week or 2 later. they only started to "balance before release" when people started to complain.

yeah, that's because they didn't have as much previous experience, and had made a completely new game with different mechanics, of course it was gonna take some time for them to get everything right. was dota itself really that balanced when it came out?

That's uh probably due to Valve being able to call up an already well balanced roster of heroes (of course with tweaks), and League basically having to start from square one.
They're both fine games but you can't fault league for having a rough start when Valve got handed a finished game :v:

because someone is going to read 'balance' and say 'stale meta lol' two things
1. what zuk means is yes only a few champs are ever played professionally but its usually quite a price range - kayle was huge for a long time and she's part of the cheapest tier of champs. Some (not all) of the cheapest champs are still considered strong picks. Due to the fact that the cheapest champs are also the oldest, they usually have less polish to them so until they get modernised they may not be played.
2. the fact that it's a stale meta means you don't have to buy all the champs anyway. It's a shitty way of looking at it, but if as people claim only x% of champs are viable, then why bother buying any others? Buy the standard 'meta' champs and save up so that when the next big patch rolls around you have enough to buy the new meta champs. I personally own all of the champions, but I sure as hell don't regularly play each one.
Almost reminds me of this image;

I really don't know why we're even talking about LoL being pay to win when at the competitive level you have everything unlocked and riot has been known to hand out fully equipped accounts with everything unlocked on them to pro players.
at the top level, league is not pay to win.
while the dude's a little extreme, he's right.
it is a real sport, with all the benefits a real sport brings :v:
I never did get the draw to dota games, not even when it was just a warcraft 3 custom map

what square 1, the initial roster of lol was a mixture of stripped down dota heroes and fan-made heroes suggested on the dota all-stars forums that pendragon took down.

it's definitely an acquired taste

The square 1 in which they realized "fuck we have our own name and none of the original rights we cant just copy paste the roster", unlike the easy ticket valve got in which "ok we got the DOTA name, time to take the heroes from that and fix them up a little"
I'm not calling out Valve or anything like that, but if you think they had half the work cut out for them that the League team did, you've got another thing coming :v:
I kind of agree with everything else but I've been playing Leauge since season 1 and while the community is garbage it is nowhere near as bad as Dota2. Arteezy being a great example of this, he gets fucking trolled so he just flat out leaves games, the last time I saw his stream a guy was fucking with him and took his bottle off the courier and shouted russian profanities (to be expected in your average game) and he said "fuck this LOL" and left.
You can pull out examples from league of toxic pros as easily as you can from dota2...

exactly, they've not only balanced their heroes but completely changed the mechanics of the game, which is why it took so long. most of the original heroes who haven't been reworked and still have dota-like kits are not picked that often.

i wouldn't exactly say they completely changed the mechanics of the game, the base components are still there, but the more complex mechanics (denying, stacking, pulling, cast rate/turn rate) were stripped away
why are people talking about LoL in a thread about a Dota 2 tournament being broadcast on ESPN???
this actually boggles my mind I honestly don't understand. are people actually getting angry about this or do people really feel the need to bring up LoL whenever a thread about Dota 2 comes up on SH? sounds a bit like jealousy to be frank, lol.

Seeing as it all started due to DotA players thrashing league, I don't think you know what you're talking about

if you actually read the thread, nobody bashed league until papaya came in here and started threadshitting it up.

Well it starts with something like a phrase such as:

League and DotA are similar in genre alone. League took such a large turn away from DotAs original very deliberate "if you get caught you made a fucking mistake son" playstyle, and opted for a game that endorsed high mobility hit and run kind of tactics. What it boils down to is that DotA 2 is very much a sequel to the original DotA (of course), while League is a mutation. In a lot of situations you'd find that DotA heroes and their kits just don't translate into the kind of game League is, as opposed to Valve working off of the original theory and just having to spruce things up a little

Where is the league bashing
The first 3 posts were dota players talking about league, the dude was wondering why league was brought up and pinned it up to "jealousy"

just because they play dota doesn't mean they dislike or do not play LoL as well
"LoL is pay to win (or grind*)" "Riot just got their shit wrecked"
stuff like that is oft repeated by dota players for the sake of having arguments, it happens in every moba thread

he asked why league was brought up, i don't really care if they play both (hell, i do!) I'm just saying that it was literally the first few posts calling out Riot
