Archaeologists excavating a trash pit at the Jamestown colony site in Virginia have found direct evidence of the human cannibalism that had long been known to have occurred among the desperate population. Cut marks on the skull and skeleton of a 14-year-old girl show her flesh and brain were removed, presumably to be eaten by the starving colonists during the harsh winter of 1609.
The remains were excavated by archaeologists led by William Kelso of Preservation Virginia, a private nonprofit group, and analyzed by Douglas Owsley, a physical anthropologist at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington. The skull bears tentative cuts to the forehead, followed by four strikes to the back of the head, one of which split the skull open, according to an article in the Smithsonian magazine, where the find was reported.
It is unclear how the young girl died but she was probably dead already and even buried before being butchered. According to a letter written in 1625 by George Percy, president of Jamestown during the starvation period, the famine was so intense “thatt notheinge was Spared to mainteyne Lyfe and to doe those things which seame incredible, as to digge upp deade corpes outt of graves and to eate them.”

So, what he just crazy or was this the style of writing at the time?
English wasn't completely orthographized in the early 1600's. It would be over 100 years before the way we typically spell our words would come into practice.

I guess what threw me off was the random capitalization.
Damn, still a bit crazy to imagine that this happened 400 years ago.
This has been known, or at least a really well spread rumor for a while now, hasn't it? I live in Virginia and I've heard about it a ton in school and just from people in general whenever the shitty situation they were in is brought up.
Most people couldn't read or write
Wrong.
English wasn't standardized until a hundred years after he wrote that.
There was NO official spelling, punctuation, or capitalization rules at that time.
You could write whatever the fuck you wanted to and it would be correct.
im hungry now

Kinda expected. Great that we have proof of it, but a lot of questionable things happen when humans lose a food source and are put under extreme conditions.
it is not correct usage in that sentence
A thread on cannibalism has quickly turned into an English lesson..
How do they do the facial reconstruction?
Skin, sinew, tendons, muscles and such-their location is already known, as is how high it pushes the skin.
By using the skull as a template of reference points you can "add" the rest. It's actually a fairly accurate system of predicting what the person used to look like.

People Today Still Write With Random Capital Letters.
