Or they're finished. We know it was under development, despite what idiots will tell you. The file that bled into Dota 2 contained references that could only have been made since about June of last year. Not to mention other small leaks about the series. If they're wrapping it up, and after having worked for so long, stands to reason they'd all retire at the end of development.
I think that's wishful thinking at best, but I want to believe dammit.

Holy shit, I never considered that.
Well just have to wait and see. If there's no news in the next few months it's definitely dead, though.
I think that's wishful thinking at best, but I want to believe dammit.
I mean, if they weren't doing anything before, why decide to retire? I mean, they'd be getting paid for doing nothing, right?
It is the nicest way to think of it tbh, and the best way to do it they all agreed they'd pitch in for one final Half Life game then call it a day and retire, i so hope this turns out the be the case.
so pretty much, key people who created the half-life games will leave before the next installment is ever conceived? nice to see the future of the series.
I bet HL3 will be some kind of multiplayer-oriented, story-light game at this point. I mean Valve has just grown to be more and more about making online communities with purchasable cosmetics. They even tried to shoehorn that shit into Portal 2.
And it'd be so much easier to adapt the Half-life series to that kind of format than even Portal. It all makes me pretty wary.
What if they're all retiring to start their own game company with Valve's blessings?
What if they're all retiring to start their own game company with Valve's blessings?
We would've heard about it by now. Also Doug Wood is just one of many Valve animators who mostly worked on HL1 and Source 1's choreography system, not a team lead (or as big of a figure as Laidlaw) by any means.
As much as I'd like to believe it's because they wrapped HL3, it's probably coincidence. People who were working for Valve in 1998 are getting pretty old now.
anyone who haves hope left give it till e3 nothing by then just assume it's never coming out
Okay guys, I can understand your frustration with Laidlaw retiring Valve, but this guy is just an animator.

Nah, GDC 2016 is coming up and we'll probably see some stuff there. I expect Sergiy or Dirk to show, wrapping up their physics talk series.

there are many signs that point to valve having something big up their sleeve, i honestly find it ridiculously pessimistic to an unrealistic level to say that there is nothing and will never be anything.

I don't doubt Valve could become a sort of... "Bell Labs" of game design. That said, I think Sergiy's work on Physics are directly leading up to L4D2 ""remake"", or L4D3.
there are many signs that point to valve having something big up their sleeve, i honestly find it ridiculously pessimistic to an unrealistic level to say that there is nothing and will never be anything.
Care to elaborate?
Honestly I haven't seen anything even remotely hinting at something coming up outside of the L4D3 development, of which there has not been anything official on for like a year and a half
Honestly I haven't seen anything even remotely hinting at something coming up outside of the L4D3 development, of which there has not been anything official on for like a year and a half
Again, that Half-Life 3 file that leaked contained references to thing that have only existed since June of last year. It literally had to have been updated since that point.
Valve are going to do some cool stuff soon, i have a lot of confidence in that. Their attempts at VR and Hardware are wrapping up and i'm pretty sure we'll start seeing more having to do with software in the near future.
What exactly will they show off? Dunno, but im pretty sure its extremely needlessly pessimistic to say that Valve will never do anything cool ever again.
They might have something to go with the Vive but I don't know. I can't get my hopes up after so many years of self inflicted disappointment.
there are many signs that point to valve having something big up their sleeve, i honestly find it ridiculously pessimistic to an unrealistic level to say that there is nothing and will never be anything.
There have been signs of "something big up their sleeve" for like 10 years.
I'm starting to side more with the doomsayers than the people who, year after year, think vague messages and secrecy mean some Next Big Gaming Revolution. Or Half-Life 3, the Jesus Christ of Videogames.
The non-release of Episode 3 was a funny joke for a few years when Episode 2 was still fresh in everyone's mind, but now thinking about it just makes me sad.
MAYBE they're still going to make another Half-Life and MAYBE it'll be some amazing next-gen experience, but I don't think Valve is the same company it was back in those days, and I find it really hard to believe that any "next" Half-Life game is going to be anything like the first two games. It might still be good, but I bet that if it is, it's in entirely different ways than the first two.
There have been signs of "something big up their sleeve" for like 10 years.
What an incredibly vague comment that seems to ignore everything Valve has done in the last 10 years.
[editline]7th February 2016[/editline]
And its not maybe, they're literally making it. Unless they cancelled the project within the last 8 months, its still a thing thats happening.

You just reminded me of this picture:

I just love how people are still going all conspiracy theory over Half Life 3, even now when it's been almost a decade since episode 2 came out.

I hope that anything microtransaction-y or muliplayer focus has nothing to do with Half-Life 3's core story. All i want is a 6 -12 hour experience with Gordon and Alyx finishing the fight. Other than that, they're free to have a multiplayer where you play as a rebel fighting back against the combine in objective based multiplayer or something.

I still dont think the timeframe really matters much. It sucks and all but Valves taken around that long with games before.

Yea but, you know any of the valve games that have taken that long to come out have turned out completely different from what they originally were.
And when I mean completely different, I mean going from this:

To this:

For another example, consider the difference between the half life 2 beta to the release version- that was only 3 or 4 years difference!
it's really optimistic that people still think Valve cares about games that they can't shoehorn a hat economy into

...Which is exactly why i dont think anyone should care about that its taken 9 years so far when discussing if its even happening.

It's really pessimistic to think valve doesn't know how to make a quality product anymore.

Its really zingy when people post memes.
Late content, but this guy, Paul Pepera, apparently worked at Valve from 2013 to 2014. https://www.artstation.com/artist/paulpepera
He mostly does those spaceship concepts, and his LinkedIn profile says he supported the TF2 team (most likely helping in designing the moonbase) and that he worked on an 'unannounced project'. His name was also in the 2013 Jira leak.
An example of his amazing work.

I called it in each Valve related thread.
HL3 will gather dust while TF2, DOTA2, AND CS:GO, and Steam get used as Valve's printing press for years to come.
It's really pessimistic to think valve doesn't know how to make a quality product anymore.
Yeah but they even shoved microtransactions into Portal 2, I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up selling new tricks for Dog.
