Valve wants VR to take off, that's why they're sending so many devkits out to people, it's not a single experience that is going to sell VR (Half-Life) it's going to be the breadth of experience. If Half-Life 3 is released, it's not going to have any more VR support than HL2 currently has, they've done interviews and this is the consistent response. The bar of entry for VR right now is the cost and performance, and will be for the foreseeable future.
I honestly think that valve will centralize a push on some kind of big-name product that'll get people to take the plunge that otherwise wouldn't have, in a similar way to how only a few big-name games initially got people to buy expensive graphics cards. Only time will tell.
Oddly enough, I was thinking about this quite a bit last night and my brain jumped to figure out who, if anyone, could replace him. My brain thought Yahtzee had an acute understanding of what made hl1/2 work on a narrative level. It'd be interesting to see his take on the mythos. No way in hell it'll ever happen, though. His DNF treatment didn't go so well, although, from what I gathered, it had more to do with his approach than the actual quality of his work.
Valve used to be cool but now all they do is cater to 9 year olds on hat fortress 2 Remember when added the very first tf2 weapons and joked about making the game an rpg What the fuck happened valve

It's not greed, it's lack of direction. The game industry is generally a difficult place to work, and people endure it out of their passion for games. If you're a developer and you've gotten into a successful company, you'll probably want to do whatever it takes to keep working there and keep doing what you enjoy and drawing a paycheck. That means taking the projects that generate lots of revenue for the company and ensure you get the nice bonus at the end of the year. It takes leadership to pursue a more risky route, which doesn't exist at Valve because of their company structure that makes project management a popularity contest. Also, I think a lot of fans of the Half-Life games project their own interests and biases onto Valve. Developers get hired because of their skills, not because they're fans of the company or the company's flagship products. I'd be willing to bet that most of Valve's developers aren't Half-Life fans per se, and have no intrinsic desire to see Half-Life 3 released, not to mention at this point a majority of the company had no involvement in previous Half-Life titles. Combine that with the flat structure that requires a project to be popular to get developed, and I find it extremely unlikely that Valve has been working on Half-Life 3 in secret all this time and are inexplicably losing long-time staff because they're about to release the game.

All the other competition is either weak from using only their own inventory for their digital distribution service (Origin/Uplay), or doesn't have the ability to garner a HUGE collection of publishers to put their games through their service. GOG is the only exception but they used to specialize in selling OLD pc games. Bottom line, I myself have already accepted that the glorious Valve of the mid/early late 2000s are gone, and that either Half Life is dead and it's corpse is locked in the closet, or it won't be as good as we'll all think and hype ourselves up to THINK that it's as good as Half Life 2. And for those that would rather think I'm some pessimist for thinking this, then all I can offer in terms of advice is this. Don't give up hope, but if you accept like I did, it'll at least cushion the blow when Valve makes either the official announcement that Half Life is truly dead, or hyping yourself when HL3 does come out, and it's not as grand as you thought it would be. I'm still utterly fucking sad about TF2, it's only trade servers and 24/7 maps. They don't even give a shit about their comic anymore, they already killed the main bad guy, and there's nothing left to cover. TF2 is going to die, all my favorite characters and moments I spent all my years with since 2008 are gonna die with it. And it's almost enough to make me cry.
You should care because even though the markets for these games do not impact the games themselves (Although that is subject to change. The intrusiveness increases with every new Compendium or CS:GO mission- locking a growing amount of pseudo-content behind a paywall) they do in fact impact Valve's decision making as a whole, and the company identity of what kind of content they want to embrace.
Well, to be fair... You say the market (Skins) doesn't impact the game, but if it's pseudo-content (Skins) that are being locked behind a paywall, why would it impact the game itself? This is exactly why TF2 added Missions that give you Skins but they don't drop you weapons that impact the gameplay (which you can get from random drops, selling crates, achivements, community market, ingame store).
It's OK, it looks like Overwatch'll scratch that itch.
The gameplay I've seen makes me think it's almost nonsensical.
The gameplay I've seen makes me think it's almost nonsensical.
Why? It looks fantastic imo.
I don't think I'll get into Overwatch until I can get back into my Blizz account and until the game's price severely drops. Also the characters in Overwatch just won't really be the same as all the characters in TF2 I loved so dearly. God speed you magnificent bastards.
When team fortress 2 was released it was fucking AMAZING. I had my tactics and knew the official maps. It was so fucking good man. It's just the charm of a good multiplayer game. Nowadays I join a server and I just get destroyed demomen with SWORDS. For some reason I just don't feel excited to check out counters to that or try to improve my skills with a class. It just feels like a clusterfuck and also overwatch is way too expensive for now.
