do people not understand why DNF was bad or something?
the kneejerk DNF response is basically a meme at this point, it almost feels like it should be bannable. same for the "half life 3 confirmed" posts which... actually are meme posts.
surely you people can think of BETTER examples than this??? It's one game that happened to be overhyped and bad because of incompetent devs. Valve are very far from incompetent devs, but they sure do make everyone wait, and they aren't hyping it at all, unlike DNF.
Ironically, you seem to be the one who completely misunderstood his post.
He's not saying that the game is going to be bad because it's been in development for a long time, I'm not sure how you even came to that conclusion.
He's saying that it's another case of a sequel taking ridiculously long to come out while releasing basically no information about why, or even to confirm that it is in fact coming out at some point.
Wouldn't this this guy have been working at valve for like 20 years now though, with the last 10 being spent not writing for games?
You do realize he could have long finished the polished the script for the game? Maybe he left because he was finished with it and wanted to move on.
It doesn't take 8 years to write a sequel so he has probably very little to do at this point.

There has never been a finished script for a Half-Life game unless the game itself is finished.
....
I wouldn't even know what a script might contain until we've got a fair bit of gameply that seems compelling. You have ideas for places, scenes, characters, but they are very very rough...sometimes reflected only in emails and conversations. Nothing like a design document of a script. This is my experience anyway
well... good luck finding another writer who is ready to work like that.

Why is everyone jumping to conclusions and assuming the worst? Maybe he actually does just want to work on his own? Not everything is a grand conspiracy for or against Half-Life.
Nobody is jumping to conclusions, it's just a meme type thing to say all this.
Wouldn't this this guy have been working at valve for like 20 years now though, with the last 10 being spent not writing for games?
He'd probably been writing for other projects at Valve that have either been shelved or haven't seen the light of day yet.
Why is everyone jumping to conclusions and assuming the worst? Maybe he actually does just want to work on his own? Not everything is a grand conspiracy for or against Half-Life.
This guy was the only writer working on Half-Life 1 and 2, and the lead writer on the episodes. Even if Half-Life 3 is in development, and even if they push it out some day, if he's not working on it, it won't be the same.
A "no" is a hundred times better than silence.
At this point I wouldn't be suprised if some of the most rabid fans will eventually try to somehow chokehold valve and force them to say yes or no
I'd say this is the last nail in Valves coffin, but they've been dead and buried to me for quite some time now.
This is just insult to injury at this point.
If he signed an NDA he won't break it, he said it himself at the bottom of the email, Valve trust him and he intends to keep their trust. For all we know Marc's part in the game is over and he's retiring on a happy note. But of course who knows.
This is probably the case to be honest. Doubt Valve would want to let him go until he at least finished writing the game.
when the email starts with "my retirement" why do people think he was dismissed
when the email starts with "my retirement" why do people think he was dismissed
People are still searching for more reasons to be angry at Valve, even if it means inventing unreasonable and unfair situations that never happened.
I wonder if Valve have always had this attitude, and we just never chose to see it/they were very quiet about it, or if they actually have changed?
or maybe he just wants to do work again period lmao
probably not when he said he's retiring
People are still searching for more reasons to be angry at Valve, even if it means inventing unreasonable and unfair situations that never happened.
To be fair, valve have been fucking up considerably recently.
To be fair, valve have been fucking up considerably recently.
Not as much as people are playing it out to be, people just want to be angry at them.
It's barely a matter of frustration. They've just been downright disrespectful and insulting to HL fans. This is the worst possible PR outcome regardless if HL was bound to die or not.
A "no" is a hundred times better than silence.
If Laidlaw leaving is the Fat Man, Valve confirming HL is dead would be the Tsar Bomba
Time makes sequels better. Valve is collecting ideas. They're making a followup on what is basically the citizen Kane of gaming. They're researching all the uses for a gravity gun.
Halo 4 and 5. Duke Nukem Forever.
Man I wonder just how many emails this guy has gotten asking for him to give them details about Half Life.
Halo 4 and 5. Duke Nukem Forever.
Halo 4 and 5 aren't made by the original developer of the franchise. DNF was in development hell and had 3 different developers.

I don't think you get what I mean, he said this making games better, but, look at those games, they were handed off to each other and their stories sucked.
This sucks, guess hl2 will be left on a cliffhanger forever
This stinks. Good luck on your future marc.
Maybe he was writing for HL3 this whole time, and is retiring now because the project is finished/in final production?
marc has been at valve for 18 years, im pretty sure he had plenty of time to think about half life 3 and im sure he shared these with his coworkers. you should stop thinking if they are working on it. they are. even if its very slow or something. just because writer left doesnt mean they are cancelling it.

If they're working on HL3 then Valve should announce it and the amount of people currently working on it rather than being silent for the next decade.
The reaction to his retirement feels a little bit histrionic. Also forget HL3, I just want to know if Valve has any games in the works at all. I'm realizing now that Portal 2 was released almost five years ago, and that Dota 2 is three years old.
L4D3 doesn't count since that game appears to be as mythological as HL3 at this point.
If they're working on HL3 then Valve should announce it and the amount of people currently working on it rather than being silent for the next decade.
amount of people working on it got leaked one or two years ago. people choose to ignore it. there also was a leak in dota 2 where they leaked hammer entity fgd for hl3. they are just slow. announcing would not help at all.

Yeah, actually, it would. Leaked development assets a few years ago are not confirmation that it's actively being worked on. Actual confirmation is.
Maybe he was writing for HL3 this whole time, and is retiring now because the project is finished/in final production?
I don't know, I don't trust valve to make anything their old fans want. They found new fans.
tinfoil hats and corporate conspiracies more at 11
Ah yes, how paranoid of me to believe that a series that hasnt been touched in any way shape or form in ten years whose lead writer has just left is dead. Surely the existence of developer assets at one point in time years ago alone proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that it's currently in the works even though the lead writer hasn't done anything on it!
Actually, by insinuating that Laidlaw lied about there not being any scripting done for HL3, you're the one believing in corporate conspiracies. Golly, your tin foil hat must be on too tight!!!
