damn those disgusting greasy Gamers™ who ruined my chances of playing hl3!!!! they upset my dear sweet valve and itll never happen now!!!!
Who do you think sets the tone for what the market can bear? The people who make it, or the people who pay for it?
Hate valve all you want but at least base your hatred in fucking reality.
It's gamers who pay for this stupid shit. Not valve who pays for it to exist. Can you have a market that sells nothing but shit if nobody buys it? No you can't because they'll be broke, but tons of people buy it so obviously they're not going to say "FUCK THIS I DON'T WANT LOW COST HIGH RETURNS! FUCK THAT!"
No, its more like "People really like multiplayer functionality in their games. We're not gonna do something that is strictly singleplayer without an incredibly good reason that is has to be done that way."
Which pisses me off, when you look at the top selling games on Steam last year:
#2 Fallout 4------------------$122.5 million revenue
#6 Cities Skylines-----------$43.6 million
#7 Besiege-------------------$7.8 million
#8 The Witcher 3------------$39 million
#11 Metal Gear Solid V-----$41.2 million
#19 Mad Max----------------$23 million
It's clear that SP only games still very popular. They'd be foolish to drop out of that market, especially given how ubiquitous their franchise is, and how many millions of die hard fans there are just begging for closure.

So do films - that doesn't make them inherently undesirable, especially given that relatively little money needs to be spent on upkeep after release.
No.
You're saying they "promised".
FACTUALLY, that's not true.
Why should I tolerate a lie I know to be a lie because you insist so?
They did actually promise long ago, when Aftermath was changed into Episodes, that there will be at least 3 Episodes. After Episode 2 they announced that Episode 3 will be an ending to HL2 series.
They never promised Half Life 3, but sure as hell they promised a finale for Episode series.
The situation between Valve and Konami is eerily similar, one wants to make pachinko machines and the other just wants to be an online PC publisher for software, games and hardware. Gone are the days where both make games.
Meanwhile Marc is retiring and Kojima is finding work with Sony. Gordon will be nothing more than than some microtransaction in TF2, Dota 2 or CSGO, while Big Boss will be reduced to a pachinko machine.
In this day and age I can't imagine how anyone could try to rationalize their way into believing Valve actually cares about gaming as much as they used to.
Why are people saying Valve is dead? They're literally the company. Everyone in game development wants to be as big and successful as them. Gamers aren't entitled to Half Life 3 they aren't forced to make it, and if they don't think they can do it justice why make them?

Kojima was forced out of the company, had his IP taken from him, and remained under a non-compete so he couldn't even make games. Marc retired because he's almost 60 and wanted to work on personnel projects. Not comparable at all.

Because HL2 Episode 2 was left on a massive cliffhanger!??!??!?!
In any case, it is being worked on, the question is simply when we learn about it

I was saying it was similar in the business sense, obviously Valve handled it better than throwing lawyers at everything and preventing him from accepting awards.
Also Marc was bored just working on Dota 2 heroes lines, which is a far cry on what he was doing 9 years ago.
The point is both Valve and Konami parted ways with making video games.

I have no problem with people making complaints, because I have my fair share of complaints. But when people are suggesting they have been mortally wounded by the lack of Half-Life 3 news, I think they need to look at uninstalling their operating system and taking a walk outside. Or, hey, how about trying out some other games? Or, hey, how about doing anything else?
I love games, don't get me wrong, but this level of worship isn't something that I think Valve is asking for. Valve isn't saying, "Hey there, user. I'm purposely trying to fuck with you." Pretty much all hype that people are feeling is their fault and their fault alone (Steam ARG serves as an example), all entitlement that people feel is their fault and their fault alone, and their impatience is their fault and their fault alone. You think Half-Life 3 is taking too long? Too bad. Life sucks, doesn't it? Move on.
And of course these people are loud-mouthed but you know as soon as they get done writing their scathing messages about Valve on Facepunch, they're going to right back to buying games on Steam, continuing to play Valve games, or doing literally anything but actually stopping support for Steam. Way to stick it to the man, guys.
Half-Life 3 is a fucking video game. So what if your story doesn't get finished? It's a story. Top Gear was a TV Show and I moved on. Thief and the Cobbler was never released. But you know what? Metal Gear Solid V was a video game that was released. Adam Ruins Everything is a TV show that is doing well. And there's a new movie every few weeks.
The world is so fucking huge and you have to be completely dense to focus it all completely down to one game, with an undying anger that prevents Valve from doing literally anything else to make you happy. I totally get not having an interest in their other products. I totally get not being satisfied with the quality of those products. But if someone in your life completely disappears and never talks to you, but you know they are in a different state, do you sit there and obsess over everything they do, saying that she doesn't communicate enough or do you move on because there are billions of people in the world? Maybe that's what you need to do if you're this worried and obsessed about Half-Life 3: move the fuck on. If you are right and they don't care about you, good job at worrying - you have failed.
It's like there's this weird tradition that people have where they do things like hate on Call of Duty endlessly, but you know what else they do? Play Call of Duty endlessly. Same thing with Steam - it feels good to sit there and feel wronged all day, like you deserve something. You don't. Have some dignity.

The situation isnt at all comparable, it doesnt matter how you spin it, you're objectively wrong.

Pretty much this, it's laughable whenever I see a post about someone never using Steam again because Valve was late on a PR announcement. Valve isn't being malicious like everyone wants to make it out to be, they just got huge so fast they're still trying to catch up with it all.

What games? They never confirmed l4d3 or gave any real information about it. CS:GO and dota 2 don't count either, those are already out and are just still getting supported just like tf2.

For the sake of argument, let's suggest that CS:GO and DOTA2 doesn't count. Why is it bad that they haven't released a game for four years? They aren't doing just games and they aren't just doing software. It is also confirmed that they are working on a game engine that is meant to be modular and multi-purpose. It is also that they're pushing for Linux support to tap into or create a new market of gamers that can possibly influence software support for an entire operating system so everyone can hop off the Microsoft bandwagon. Sounds good to me.
If you want to be upset that they haven't released a game that you like for a few years, I'm totally okay with that, but only if whatever you're saying is followed up with, "I'm very upset because I am entitled and cannot tolerate opposing opinions, movements, or genres." If you're not willing to say that, then I don't know what your angle is. The problem ain't Valve, bud, and it's erroneous to keep pushing personal problems onto Valve instead of analyzing your own major malfunction.

valve is one of the most bipolar companies on the planet, you can't be sure L4D3 and Portal 3 will come out when they've canned so many games in the past as just experiments.

They've got three games currently out they're making content for and have a history of keeping projects under wraps until close to release.
Bethesda didn't announce Fallout 4 until a few months short of release, are you going to try and say they weren't making games for years?

I thought this was about new games. Take a look around, I wasn't taking part in any arguing, that was my only post.
Further the post I replied to said "making two games". A game that is released already and getting updated is no longer in production, it is already technically made. It is just getting updated

You know what game I'm quite happy to hear about? DOOM. You know what game I would not like halted right now? DOOM. You know what I would do if I were to hear about its cancellation? Move on.
I'm so far removed from the development and actually playing the game that I just don't care. I have a queue of games that I want to play that are so backed up from the games that have released over the years that I do not have the capacity to care. Even if you're a big-time gamer and you're playing all of the games, so what? Is Valve gonna put a dent in your emotional integrity simply because you'll have to wait for the next in myriad of games both indie and major that release all of the time? You're doing yourself such an awful disservice by being amped up over one game company's idleness with games, and you're especially doing yourself an awful disservice if you're going to rush them into releasing a game that you definitely won't like. "These things, they take time" is not simply a quote I apply to Valve but to every good thing that comes out.
Don't believe me? Check out the Giant Bomb review on Fallout 4. Had they waited a while to iron out all of those bugs and glitches, the game would have been more fun to play and would have scored higher. You don't want to get Valve hyped up on the drug that is shitting out games as fast as possible to make as much money in as least time and least effort. They've already dipped a little bit into that mindset with some of the updates which I totally impugn them for, but past that I'm not going to impugn them for taking their time. Things are better when time is taken. Even if it takes decades I'll wait with patience by not paying attention and doing other things.

Bullshit, the fans make the content for them while Valve sits on their laurels. We knew when Portal 2 was in development when the devs were talking about it years before it was released, openly.
I remember reading an article why they don't talk about games in years in advance. Basically they dont want to talk about it in fear of making fans upset when it doesn't come out, like Ep3.

Go ask the people in the TF2 Emporium what they think of producing items for Valve. If fans were upset with it, I would imagine that the TF2 Emporium would slow down to a screeching halt, and no items would be produced for it. If there was no market for it, people wouldn't be buying crates. But it sounds like people are happy with the end results - you're the odd one out. And don't worry, you're not the only one. I join you. I've stopped with the whole crate thing as soon as the TF2 skins came out and I don't want to support that. But I've already voted with my wallet, there's not much else I can do. And they're working on Source 2 and Rubikon. What is the next logical step after that? For me, it's not giving a fuck and waiting. But for someone like you, it would be a game, so wait patiently.

I can see where some people are coming from.
I mean, why would Valve even need to make HL3 when they can spend a couple days slapping skins on weapons that people will pay top dollar for or pulling hats off the workshop that other people made and make tons of money.
They don't need the money that HL3 will produce just yet. They know the money they get from skin and hat sales will keep them afloat as they work on other projects they have been wanting to do. AKA SteamOS and Steam hardware. Maybe when the money flow from their hardware and cosmetics stops coming at full blast we will see HL3 coming out.
