Say what you want. There is a reason why Joe Paterno is the most beloved figure, and this scandal won't change that. What he has done for the community and the school is beyond what most head coaches or such would do. Could he have done more to help this incident? Sure. The blame of this incident is unfairly placed on JoePa.
I think you don't realize blame can be shared. Lots of people are to blame here, from the witness who didn't himself call the cops to the university president. The fact that others share blame does not relieve Paterno from his responsibility. That he ruined his legacy is his own damn fault. He could have retired on his own terms a nationally loved and respected figure. One simple call to the cops is all it would have taken. He wouldn't even have had to accuse anyone or name names. Just say "I have a person here who has possible information on a crime that may have occurred, I'm sending him over now."
And now people are rioting over this.
Farewell Joe Pa :( The 2012 class of Penn State is now forever cursed thanks to this; glad my sister graduated in 2011. [editline]10th November 2011[/editline]
And now people are rioting over this.
It's not a good time to be in State College, PA.
people riot over the stupidest things goddamn
Well this one makes sense at least, bunch of drunk college students take up arms after hearing their hero was fired.
Honestly, he was just as guilty as the guy who was doing the raping. He stood by and let it happen to preserve his career. Personally, he IS a nice guy, but it's not inexcusable. The only reason he's "retiring" now is because of the pressure the college put on him over this. Basically, since he was in charge when this shit went down, he gets axed too.
I have a friend who refuses to admit Paterno did anything wrong and places the blame on all the other people involved, no matter how much I try to convince him that Paterno did the wrong thing. It reminds me of (dare I even mention this show on Facepunch anymore) Peter Griffin's defense of OJ Simpson on Family Guy. Minus the murder, anyway, but still an irrational idolization.
Well this one makes sense at least, bunch of drunk college students take up arms after hearing their hero was fired.
So it's exactly like the riot in vancouver
So people can riot over their football coach getting sacked over a sex scandal, but they won't riot over getting put over the knee of the big banks and getting toyed with by politicians. My nation has it's priorities severely mixed-up.
I'm willing to bet that you would go to college for 3 years to play a sport and then move up to the pros and make millions if you had the chance.
No because in my country, higher education involves higher education We have dedicated athletics institutes. Besides, if they have the teams playing each other, why not make a little money off of it and do some good for the players?
Lot's of money is perhaps the worst moral argument in the history of ever. Because I'd wager that an institution dedicated entirely to sporting would be far more effective. Just because it's the status quo doesn't mean it's a good thing.

"JoePa" at some point decided his future at penn state was more important than stoping a man who rapes children.

But at least he brought it to attention and managed to stop it now instead of allowing it to continue anymore. I'll defend the god damned man, he did NOT deserve termination. After being Penn State's coach for nearly 50 consecutive years, leading the university to many victories and even garnering nationwide fame and recognition, does not deserve this at all. He was going to retire at the end of the season, that's respectable, not being given a pink slip.
Who gives a shit how many times he led a team to victory he sat idly by as child molestation went unpunished I don't give two flying fucks about "chain of command", when children are being raped you ignore your fucking boss and go directly to the police he is fucking scum

He deserved termination alright, he's lucky he's not facing jail time...yet.

The incident in which Paterno was informed of happen in 2002. When he informed the school of the matter they opted to just ban Sandusky from bringing children with him on campus. Instead of doing the right thing Paterno choose to go along with the school and do nothing. The allegations and story itself only came to light when the victim came forward. Im sick of seeing ol JoePa "apologizing" and "grieving" for the family. He had nine fucking years to do something about it but instead choose keep quiet, allowing Sundusky to molest more. If anything he deserves to be charged with the rest of them.

He went above and beyond the police, he went to the person who RUNS the police on Campus. Penn State Main is its own community called University Park which is inside a city called State College, PA(Happy Valley). I figure you wouldn't know that though. Which means going to an outside source which doesn't have jurisdiction in the City would be completely out of the question. You have to understand that Joe Paterno is a football coach, and it isn't his job to fight crime and child abuse. That responsibility rests on his superiors, in which case they didn't do jack shit. The biggest name in this whole scandal/event is Joe Paterno and the media is feeding off of that. That's why he's getting so much negative attention, and I'm assuming that's why you're holding him in such a negative light too.

I didnt realize the Penn State administration has the power to Arrest/ imprison people for crimes. Joe is just as responsible for not reporting the crime as everyone else. He choose to go along with the administration and ignore it, allowing Sandusky to continue praying on children. Its as simple as he had the power to stop it but didnt.
And what do the students do when they hear this? Why, they riot of course! Such bright young people!

He is just as guilty as the guy who fucked the little kid. There is no excuse good enough to say "A person on my staff is fucking little kids in the showers, but I must think of the school, and not the little kid" Yea, and the students are fucking dumb. Rioting over this? In a few years they won't even be going there, and will have moved on with their lives. I think he needs jail time. You don't watch a murder and do nothing, you don't watch a robber and do nothing, you don't want watch someone being bullied and do nothing, and you don't watch a old man fuck a child. Fuck sports and fuck Penn state. If you want try to cover this up it shows how inbred Penn state really is.

Penn Sate is in its own City, it's not a "little community" thing. You're calling all the students dumb over a riot too? The rioting that went on isn't Penn State. Do you know what Penn State is? This is Penn State A massive candlelight vigil held last night for the victims of Sandusky's crimes. That is what Penn State is. Rioting isn't Penn State and instead of focusing on Paterno so much how about you focus on Sandusky? The man who actually COMMITTED the child sexual abuse. I stand by my belief that Paterno did what needed to be done, and that he's being used as a scapegoat for the inadequacies and failure to take action by the Administration. Get real man, and find out who We Are
^Sounds like someone is trying to rationalize.

He knew just as much as anyone else and also was able to stop it as much.
Get real man, and find out who We Are
sounds like i'm reading an ad for penn state "Penn State, go beyond the sexual abuse! click here to explore"
I stand by my belief that Paterno did what needed to be done
If Paterno did what needed to be done there would be less children who have been traumatized for life due to sexual abuse Maybe think about them instead of your damned school
No, no, no.
going to his supervisor first was ok but as soon as he saw that nothing was happening he should have gone to the police directly
Unfortunately, this is where I agree with everyone else. Joe Paterno should have done more to protect the lives of the children. He did do what was lawfully right, but didn't meet his moral obligations. JoePa has meant so much to this university, that it's pretty much a shock. Non PSU students can't possibly begin to understand what he means to us. My two cents.
