If this was "man fails to report rapist to police after superiors do nothing." everyone here would be agreeing that he could have done more. But since this is Joe Paterno we have to make exceptions? Just because he coached a winning team doesn't mean shit. He could have reported it to the state police.
You make it sound so black and white by summarizing it as "Paterno knowingly allowed children to be raped" and that is not the case.
Explain how it isn't the case? Everything could have stopped if he had gone directly to the police himself. It's pretty sad how people are still defending Paterno just because he's the beloved veteran football coach. Let me explain once again why he is a terrible person and deserved to be fired. He was notified by a graduate assistant about Sandusky having sex with a kid in the locker room. So what does Paterno do? He notifies the athletic director and senior vice president for finance and business a DAY AFTER learning of the incident. The graduate assistant told him that he personally witnessed Sadunsky banging a 10 year old, and he doesn't even notify someone until the next day, and furthermore, he doesn't notify the police. That's ALL he fucking does. He tells his boss, and then moves on like nothing happened. The police never get involved because NO ONE told them. You think that Paterno would be concerned and asking questions like "Whatever happened to that kid? What was Sadunsky doing with him?" It takes almost another decade before Sadunsky is arrested, and that's because one of the VICTIMS spoke up. SEVERAL people from Penn State knew about these allegations, and they never told the police. That's absolutely unacceptable and inexcusable. If you think someone is being sexually assaulted then you should directly tell the police immediately.
I find the importance of sport in American higher education utterly absurd
As a football loving american, I agree.
Stop trying to defend him. "JoePa" at some point decided his future at penn state was more important than stoping a man who rapes children.
Yeah I find the people who protested his being fired disgusting It shows they care more about sports than the victims
