It wouldn't be at gunpoint if the public VOTED FOR THE GOVERNMENT DOING IT, now would it, Penn?
The federal government is more capable of providing a social safety net than any other entity in the country, it's their duty to do so as representatives of the people
Penn needs to stick to magic because any time he tries to make some social commentary he makes an ass of himself. Remember the video he made in response to gay kids committing suicide where he basically just said that they were weak and should have gotten over it?
It wouldn't be at gunpoint if the public VOTED FOR THE GOVERNMENT DOING IT, now would it, Penn?
Here's the full quote that expands the reasoning:
It’s amazing to me how many people think that voting to have the government give poor people money is compassion. Helping poor and suffering people is compassion. Voting for our government to use guns to give money to help poor and suffering people is immoral self-righteous bullying laziness.
People need to be fed, medicated, educated, clothed, and sheltered, and if we’re compassionate we’ll help them, but you get no moral credit for forcing other people to do what you think is right. There is great joy in helping people, but no joy in doing it at gunpoint.
People try to argue that government isn’t really force. You believe that? Try not paying your taxes. When they come to get you for not paying your taxes, try not going to court. Guns will be drawn. Government is force — literally, not figuratively.
I don’t believe the majority always knows what’s best for everyone. The fact that the majority thinks they have a way to get something good does not give them the right to use force on the minority that don’t want to pay for it. If you have to use a gun, I don’t believe you really know jack. Democracy without respect for individual rights sucks. It’s just ganging up against the weird kid, and I’m always the weird kid.
Not when the federal government is bankrupt and $15 trillion in debt. How will the social programs be funded? By printing more funny money?
Of course government uses force, it has to use force all the time.
I thought he was a libertarian, not an anarchist?
"Religion has nothing to do with intolerance of homosexuality." - You, you goddamn idiot, 2011
I didn't imply that, I was implying that, when someone asks why people hate gays, some people immediately say "religion" before thinking. Religion doesn't not have nothing to do with homophobia, but it doesn't have to do entirely with it either.
Besides, I honestly didn't a fuck about whether educating, feeding, sheltering, medicating and clothing every citizen is a compassionate act. All I care is that everyone is educated, fed, sheltered, healthy-enough and clothed.
By raising taxes. You can't expect to be the "richest" and most prosperous nation in the world while having some of the lowest taxes of any western country

It's also been shown time and time again that the free market absolutely will not take care of these things
The government has to do it since nobody else will
And hey, if you DO go ahead and donate you get a tax writeoff anyway. So if all these libertarians really are donating as much money to the poor as they claim to be, a tax increase shouldn't hurt them much at all

our NHS was born only a year after the end of the second world war
it's cheaper per capita and more effective at covering every citizen's health than private insurance
your country could have had the same thing years and years ago if your politicans and voters weren't all bumfuck stupid

Legalize drugs, cut military spending, remove the hold the insurance agencies have over your medical industry, for instance

It actually could have happened for them. Check this out.
If that ended up happening America would probably be in a much better place right now.

unbelievable
why do working- and middle-class americans insist on making their lives as hard as possible?
If the US were any other OECD country, with the amount of money the US spends on healthcare, everyone would have access.
If the US were any other OECD country, with the amount of money the US spends on healthcare, everyone would have access.
with the amount the USA spends on healthcare they could have the most robust universal healthcare system in the world
it is honestly gutting to think about
the US could be such a wonderful place to live if only attitudes towards work weren't so asinine
it's like people are proud to work for shitty pay and then speak and vote accordingly, screwing over the people who need help the most, and the super rich exploit the fuck out of this and are lauded for it
attention: if you think working for peanuts makes you a badass, you're just another dumbfuck making life hard for everyone

We shouldn't be in this situation in the first place. Half of the voters in this country is not responsible for voting these cocksuckers in while the rest of us are getting royally fucked because of their ignorance and flat-out stupidity.
nah i'm pretty sure wanting to repeal the civil rights act makes you racist.
so we're just ignoring the whole thing where he is technically right about the civil rights act being unconstitutional?
i completely disagree with him on the matter and i think its fucking stupid that he would want to repeal the civil rights act, but you're being a dumbass and diverting from any form of serious debate or logic by just saying "nah lol hes racist!!!!!"
seriously with any non-republican candidate, shit like this wouldn't fly, but apparently because you disagree with him it means you feel it's appropriate to just make shit up and ignore any actual arguments
once again, i'm stunned at how someone is actually capable of fucking up paul bashing
theres a thread on the front page of this subforum detailing WHY ron paul is a racist, and rather than talking about that, you're taking something that isn't racist and trying to pin it on him as racist
wtf
How is it unconstitutional?
[editline]29th December 2011[/editline]
I mean the supreme court okayed it
How is it unconstitutional?

i don't know the details of the supreme court okaying it but it doesn't really make a difference for me because i think it's stupid either way, but the point is that his line of thinking is that it's unconstitutional, and he may very well think that the supreme court were wrong in okaying this, which makes it a matter of constitutional legality rather than "grr im angry old white man no more rights lol!!"
lol ron paul doesn't give a shit about the constitution
the constitution guarantees the children of illegal immigrants are granted american citizenship and he wants to put a stop to that
repealing the civil rights act is best for whitey, there's really no softer way to put it

It's okay guys, I'll get out the time machine and fix it
[editline]30th December 2011[/editline]
Sorry lads, no can do. The military-industrial complex seems to work in your favour for the duration of the Cold War.

On the upside, I had a quick look into the future and you've only got a few more capitalist bubble-depression cycles to go until we fix it.
Prime example of Facepunch logic.
Why do people hate gays? Fair enough question.
because religion
man fuck da religion
But like of a reply but uh, I'm religious (Not Christian mind you.) and I said that. I mean, I don't follow the Bible, but anyone who does follow the Good Book of Da Lord word for word is kind of an idiot.
The main folly of a religion is it's inability to adapt to modern times.
And it can be traced back to the Old Testament wherein it condemned it, due to babies dying often. It was considered a waste of seed. There's really no other explanation for it.
Here's the full quote that expands the reasoning:

Our government is not bankrupt, and our national debt has no short-term link to the amount of money we have like you're implying.
We're in a deficit. That's the problem you should be mentioning; not the debt.
I like how people like you have this hindrance that prevents you from seeing more than five days into the future.
You assume that we're going to just suddenly sharply increase the amount of spending given to social programs. No. That's not what we're trying to say. We're trying to say that if/when we fix our deficit problems, we want to have more focus on these social safety nets.
It's not a valid excuse to point out a problem that every fucking united states citizen and their dog knows.
Also, I like how this guy compares the fines and jailtime of taxation to the government threatening you with death.
People treat taxes as if it's the government stealing from them. Well, actually, it's just you paying for what you're given.
You want water that's safe to drink? You want a military and law enforcement that keeps you safe? You want a (more or less) functioning democracy that voices your opinion? You want roads that are safe to drive on? You want pharmaceuticals that are safe to use? You want your civil rights protected? You want public education?
Guess what: these things don't come for free. A government needs money to function. So do these services. That's why you pay taxes. Cheating out on your taxes is quite literally stealing.
So quit spewing your sensationalist Reaganomics bullshit.
"i really fucking hate the gays, but i have some gay friends i guess?" - semite 2011
I do believe that it is within my cognitive continuity that I do indeed hold some manor of distaste for the social tangent that so many a politician and statistical mathematician would call "The Gays". Barring this unfortunate vendetta, if one were to look into my well groomed list of occasional acquaintances, one may stumble upon a small collection of homosexuals within this data set. Extravagant.

Well maybe OWS ain't all bad after all.
That was one study. And later they found out that the subjects weren't "turned on", they were just extremely uncomfortable and repulsed.
And saying that homophobes are homosexuals is stupid. I'm a homophobe, I don't like being around or seeing anything gay, but that doesn't mean I'm so totally into dudes.
I used to boldly say that too... When I was 11.
By the way, I'm gay.
