• Obama wants to kill Barred Owls!

What a snob.
I'm pretty sure that 99.9% of every single species to ever exist has died out or split into another species. Once you realize this, one becomes jaded to the idea of trying to "save an endangered species." I don't mean to say people's efforts are not laudable, just that in the end, it's more trouble than it's worth.
I'd find it a huge shame if tigers would go extinct. You do have a point, though I think that human influence should be minimized...

Its completely obvious that Obama was attacked by owls when he was a child.
The spotted owl has been one of the US's biggest conservation efforts for years. He's just continuing that and taking a new approach. To those that are like "let nature take its course" I dont think you understand how humans have put tons of species at risk, and by threatening these species you threaten entire communities.
yes you're absolutely right humans are responsible for >90% of all the species that have ever lived now being extinct WE KILLED THEM 25 species go extinct per day; 24.9 due to humans! WE'RE KILLING LIFE ON EARTH
How do you have .1 species? Much less if 25 died per day, 9125 would die per year, that means that over the last decade 91250 species of animals would have been completely obliterated. Now I'm no expert, but there's about 1.4 million species of animals in the world that we know of, if 25 ENTIRE SPECIES OF ANIMALS died per day it would take only 153 years for all life to have died out on earth. Not to mention that with figures of them all being endangered, and being fairly in your favour with figures, 1000 living species members for your sake, that's 25000 animals that die each day. I'm pretty sure that if 25000 members of a select group of protected beings died in one day, SOMEONE would notice.
Its completely obvious that Obama was attacked by owls when he was a child.
and a Spotted Owl was his savior.
I'm all for saving animals that are endangered because of poaching or deforestation but if it is just another more sucessful species taking over then that's just nature doing what it does.
Not fucking true at all. Take a good look at South Florida, down here we have major problems related to this. Our entire damn ecosystem could collapse because of some exotics. Nothing to do with people. If the ecosystem collapses then all life down here will disappear and eventually it will effect us. We don't save species just for the damn animals, eventually it will come back and bite us in our ass. [editline]29th February 2012[/editline]
Title is a gross over simplification of the situation.
No shit, "Sensationalist Headlines," in a nutshell. It's a joke. Hoo are we to decide which species should live and die?

Most biologists think the extinction rate is between 1000-25000 species a year (and consequently, that we're in a mass extinction). A lot of it comes from people estimating how many "undiscovered species" are dying per year due to habitat loss. This is a good read about the subject. Really relevant part is after all the other mass extinctions.

This is possibly not even half of what is actually out there, since this only lists the discovered ones. The amount of ALL species is in the billions. Now of the animals that are currently endangered, the vast majority of them are amphibians, which are quite delicate creatures. Another thing to take into account is what is the definition of an animal? Most biologists agree that the vast majority of all animals are extremely small, multicellular, and rudimentary creatures that most of us have never even noticed. Things like Water Bears. If we take into account all of these things, you'll see that these statistics being thrown around make things look a lot worse than they really are.
owls are assholes
It's fine to hunt one species in the name of conservation.
The comments in this thread made me cringe. Issues like this are very serious for local environments. You see it a lot at the great lakes - a type of fish is introduced that is not natural in the great lakes' ecosystems, and it completely drowns out the natural wildlife in the area. This effects everybody - fishing is more difficult, entire ecosystems have the potential to crash... It's not "Let's shoot owls LOL." It's a damn good way to slow down the invasion of species that were (in a huge percentage of the cases) introduced by humans. There's tons of examples of this sort of thing. While I doubt owls are causing any environmental havoc, it's definitely a good move. At least the Obama administration cares about the stability of ecosystems.
How do you have .1 species?
fuck you you i-read-things-too-literally dumb prick i was being sarcastic. fuck.
The country is going down a triple somersalted cartwheeled shithole and they are worrying about owls holy shit, why not put toddlers in charge of the government instead since its the goddamn same thing?
Holy crap this is one of the stupidest posts I've read in my entire life. Do you have any idea what a Government is? It kinda administrates EVERYTHING. Biodiversity and conservation of the environment are one part of a huge government, unless you seriously think every single agency in the US should be scrapped and replaced with "lol fix the country agency of epic win"
The only thing making this a bad thing is the fact that everyone is fond of owls. Except of course for Simon Cowell, but he's a dick so who cares. On the flipside of the argument, do owls have much meat on them, and has anyone had the opportunity to eat one?
Things like Water Bears.
That's it, never touch water again.
I can imagine how hard it is to keep the environment in good condition when the U.S. is so large, with different policies and carelessness and whatever the fuck.
The country is going down a triple somersalted cartwheeled shithole and they are worrying about owls holy shit, why not put toddlers in charge of the government instead since its the goddamn same thing?
would you rather that we keep biodiversity in the world somewhat stable and prevent a species from becoming extinct or should we give a futile attempt at stopping the economy from going so far down it comes out in china i'm not exactly a hippy pinko liberal muffin-headed commie but i think that the former would be pretty useful in the long run
You guys are aware that more species go instinct regardless of human interaction, than species we actually killed off by hunting/polluting nature/etc, right? Countless of species died out even before humans developed civilizations. Im surprised you people aren't even aware.
This is completely true, the evident problem is that with all this fuckin' technomology and shit we're speeding up the death of species faster than the world can produce more of them. Ergo, the various ecologies and other forms of life that had various symbiotic (or any kind of for that matter) relationships with the now dead creature have to deal with it not existing anymore, and most of the time they fail to adapt, especially recently as many more species are diminishing than previously. People are extremely ignorant towards the effects of even minute changes to the environment. Fuck, even things people think are beneficial can screw things up, so it's a delicate problem. The reason people should give a shit if they're not hippies or anything is because all of this has massive economic ramifications.
Hoo are we to decide which species should live and die?
The ones who brought it to brink of death by what we did to it unintentionally, actually. [editline]1st March 2012[/editline] Not giving a hand somebody hanging off a bridge still makes you a murderer, if you were the one to push him over the edge.
