I remember watching a documentary on this. It said that the ashes would spread around the world, and mess up the entire ecosystem. Oh and the sun would be kinda blocked, so a long winter/ice age.
Would it be possible to drill down into the chamber and slowly drain out some of the gasses or even some of the magma?

Well, i don't think that might work well, since the magma is held at high pressure underground. Oh and scientists say that in the timeline of it exploding, we are a few thousand years overdue.
