No we'll be fine, China will give us food.
I'm sure, considering half the things produced over there get shipped here.
Scientifically accurate depiction Maybe it's just a trollcano - making you think it's going to erupt and getting everyone worked up.
We all gonna die? :ohdear:
OH GOD, IT'S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW!
it's still gonna miss alabama, tennessee, georgia, south carolina, north carolina, virginia, and kentucky the mass inbreeding from those states will be enough to repopulate the rest
yes but if we're lucky the massive volcano will some how trigger a massive tsunami is the gulf coast wiping out the south
[img_thumb]http://photogallery.filmofilia.com/data/media/29/2012_poster_07.jpg[/img_thumb]
To be honest, Michael Bay could of made a better movie then that with like 1 Explosion. Would of also made it more believing with a party popper.
Guys, if an ash cloud covers the planet, Astronomers die out. :v:
[img_thumb]http://img.listal.com/image/111163/600full-supervolcano-poster.jpg[/img_thumb] Oh shit
Wasn't that a small TV film... I think I remember watching it , and I think it was based around yellowstone. Crazy shit , volcanic winter.
im pretty sure a volcanoes definition of "about to explode" and our definition of "about to explode" is about 500 years off
No we'll be fine, China will give us food.
China has food shortages all the time and imports food from many different places, one of their primary suppliers is the USA.
Just wondering, but couldn't there be a way to relieve the pressure slowly? Rather than having it all explode at once.
China has food shortages all the time and imports food from many different places, one of their primary suppliers is the USA.
This. What most people in this thread don't realize is that this is a really goddamn fucking massive volcano. It's called a super volcano for a reason, the Caldera is massive as it is. Essentially, when it goes off, it'll be the largest terrestrial explosion mankind has ever seen. [editline]26th January 2011[/editline]
Just wondering, but couldn't there be a way to relieve the pressure slowly? Rather than having it all explode at once.
It's been toyed with theoretically, but practically, it's a bit of a gray zone.
It's been toyed with theoretically, but practically, it's a bit of a gray zone.
Agreed. There's so much pressure built up in that thing. If you tapped it to relieve even a small amount, you'd probably end up triggering a massive eruption. I don't think modern human engineering skills could tackle a problem like this.
I hate all the fucks saying "oh boy I live in [insert country not in blast zone], I will not be affected at all" This will affect everyone, no matter where you live.
TL;DR West coast is BEST coast and I'm not worried one bit.
yeah but see you're forgetting about that whole big-ass earthquake from the san andreas fault line that's supposedly going to fuck the shit outta the entire west coast
I was living in Colorado 2 years ago, glad I moved away. Not that it matters.
I was living in Colorado 2 years ago, glad I moved away. [img_thumb]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/42a3ed0451bd.gif[/img_thumb] Well I guess I'm safe, although my friends in Colorado & Texas are fucked.
Yeah I guess you'll be safe while the US collapses and the world's economies crash.
Ha, i'm barely outside your predicted ash path, up yours supervolcano.
You people keep going on about how "X state is safe" and how "Y state will be blown to smithereens", but if Yellowstone blows, it will have a drastic effect on the entire world. Two other calderas of the same sort of magnitude have blown in the Earth's history, and both have blotted out the sun for months, and caused some pretty nasty earthquakes.
ITT people thinking they have a right to live and not give a shit about anything because they don't live in the affected area not even realising this would fuck the whole world over.
I really hope it doesn't happen in 2012 all the morons will think they are right, still I guess that would be the least of the worlds problems
science :science:

Possibly hundreds, if not thousands. In human history, there have been three confirmed and five total reported. The latter two were likely normal volcanoes that were just fucking big.
I realised I hate suddenly being aware of worrying things. Like that time I read about anaethesia awareness. [editline]26th January 2011[/editline] This planet's too fucking dangerous, I'll take the one way ticket to Mars, cheers.
I really hope it doesn't happen in 2012 all the morons will think they are right, still I guess that would be the least of the worlds problems
2012 suicides would be just a global idiot cull.
Yeah I guess you'll be safe while the US collapses and the world's economies crash.
Yeah... Apologies for my ignorance. So, uh, correction: Everyone would be fucked.
what if you're in the ISS during this?
Everyone may be fucked but the USA the most, since their land will be in the blast radius, so it will take ridiculous amounts of work to fix that land and rebuild
[img_thumb]http://www.lampholderpub.com/YellowstoneFalloutAshBed.gif[/img_thumb]
Not really sure how they could predict the ash bed layout of Yellowstone since it really depends on the wind patterns at the particular time the volcano erupts. The ash might end up blowing to the north, perhaps to the south. Seasonal changes will dictate a lot of that as well. One thing is for certain: when it does finally explode, we're all in big fucking trouble. Just the amount of debris (like dirt, wood, organic material, rock, etc.) that will be kicked up into the atmosphere will cause catastrophic damage to the globe (nevermind the ash and gas). Crops all over the planet will die, rivers and lakes will be poisoned (along with parts of the oceans) where ash and other contaminates fall into them, plant life will begin to die from the lack of sunlight and subsequent colder temperatures, animals will begin to starve as their ecosystems are suddenly disrupted if not completely destroyed initially following the blast which will be the largest known in history. To date, the largest volcanic eruption that we know of happened in Toba, Sumatra anywhere from 69000 to 77000 years ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toba_catastrophe_theory Almost 3000 miles away from the epicenter of the blast, which had 10000 times the force of Mount Saint Helens, over 30 centimeters of ash accumulated on the ground. So much ash and gas was thrown into the atmosphere that rain turned black and took on VERY strong acidity. Global temperatures fell by as much as 20*F in places. A 10-year volcanic winter ensued, and the human population was reduced to 10000 at most. THAT was a close call. An eruption from Yellowstone is predicted to be even larger in blast force alone- hence one can imagine what kind of a situation we'd be facing globally with this and knowledge about the aforementioned Toba eruption in mind. Anyone who has seen The Road and remembers the beginning (which was actually filmed on the surrounding hills of Mount Saint Helens) actually has a pretty good idea of what a lot of the terrain will look like a few years after the eruption and subsequent mass extinctions occur as far as the United States is concerned; just inflate it by a few thousand miles and several hundred landscapes later. The sad and terrifying part at the same time is that there's really nothing we can do; this is something we have no control whatsoever over. Attempting to relieve the pressure with any kind of drilling operations would more than likely just cause the entire thing to explode early, perhaps with an even greater force. We're going to get raped. By a volcano. Hard. And it's going to hurt. A lot. Maybe not now, but it will happen someday. [editline]26th January 2011[/editline] On the plus side though we won't have to live with conspiracy theorists or any of those 2012 mystics and their nonsense anymore.
Actually, many, many more Supervolcanic Eruptions have occurred than a mere 3 in Earth's history. Possibly hundreds, if not thousands. The latter two were likely normal volcanoes that were just fucking big.
Why go on about stuff we have no clue about when we have three cases that we're familiar with? If I just said "Yeah, so, supervolcanos, millions of them have gone off," nobody would bat an eyelid.
