Battlefield 3 PC Version won't have in-game server browser
I think EA tried too hard. They wanted to make something special for the PC gamers, such as the battlelog with Facebook like features and so on, but forgot that no PC gamer asked for it.
Great in theory but perhaps bad in practice. I didn't really like it when I played the alpha, but if you think it's going to change my decision to buy the game or not then you're wrong.
I've only read the first page, and it saddens me how all of you or so thickheaded. EA and DICE have made so much to please the PC gamers, and what do they get in return?
Tons and tons of kids screaming at them. Haha, there's really no difference between PC gamers and console gamers.
People don't want a 'facebook' for their videogames. People just want to play a game.
Blizzard tried something similar with their real-ID thing, and there was such a massive backlash that it scared the shit out of them, and they pretty much reworked the whole thing.
Difference:
BLIZZARD: HEY YOU GUYS CHECK THIS AWESOME NEW REAL-ID THING
PLAYERS: WTF NO THAT SUCKS
BLIZZARD: OH, OK. WE'LL REWORK IT
PLAYERS: COOL
EA: HEY YOU GUYS CHECK OUT THIS AWESOME NEW BATTLELOG THING
PLAYERS: WTF NO THAT SUCKS
EA: YOU WILL LEARN TO LOVE IT
PLAYERS: NO WE WONT *leave*
EA: PC GAMING IS DEAD
I know this is quite annoying, but it definitely doesn't justify 13 pages of rage, you guys are bigoted and your standards are too high.
Too high standards? Who wants to close the game every time you need to switch server because a friend can't get in the one you're in? It's really just a dumb decision, I'd have been fine if the battlelog thing was integrated into in game as well.
If I can't spend years trying to load a server browser and curse every time I instinctively press escape it's not a true battlefield game...
Somehow I didn't twig from the alpha that this might happen, I'm still more pissed at them using their shitty "RENT-A-SERVER" rather than releasing an .exe but common EA you're just making bad decisions.
oblivion and waw had mod tools, as well as a fuckton of mods respectively
Yes but that's when they realized people would buy small amounts of content for relatively absurd prices. Then they understood that such small amounts of content wouldn't sell anywhere near as well if mods could offer the same, if not more, for free.

What I'm trying to say is that you're making it sound worse than it is, just like Origin, people throwing hissy fits over such trivial stuff and saying they're going to cancel their pre-orders or whatever.
It's just silly.
Gamers are the last people who want to use anything similar to Facebook. :v:

And why shouldn't they? If they don't approve of a feature, they shouldn't be able to act?
If anything it's several "trivial" features that detract from the fact they are trying to pass it as a true batttlefield game, when in fact it's just a rehashed Bad Company, which although fun comes no way near close to BF2.
what the fuck i dont want to alt tab out of the game and open my web browser, log in, then find a fucking game
what retard thought this up
Of course not! If you don't approve of it, you're supposed to just be grateful! Why act against something you don't like?

err, that wasn't really the same, Blizzard was fucking up anyonymity for players whereas EA is just going a bit overboard with the battlelog intergration. People do want battlelog though, it's useful for bringing the community together and organizing games and stuff like that, but they also want an in game server browser

of course they should, it's what brought back the commo rose :v:

Yes they should, just saying this has been blown way out of proportion.

Steam does the same thing Battlelog does.
Kertz points out that BF3 “starts up really fast
Well they better deliver on this claim. If it takes longer to get to the loading screen in BF3 than it does in BC2, they've seriously screwed up. Otherwise I'm fine with it, it's really no different from an ingame browser in terms of convenience. You'll have to connect to a server from the browser when you want to start a game, and click "exit game/disconnect" when you want to stop playing/change a server, just like you have to do in any other game.
God you're so thick. They said it themselves the engine is too complicated for modding, there's nothing wrong with Origin, and Battlelog works perfectly fine it takes like 20 seconds from leaving a sever to entering a new one. Stop whining, were you even in the Alpha? If not, then please be quiet.
Modding complicated WRONG
on the other hand theres another problem
it cost MILLIONS to even make modding tools
I didn't think that I'd be pushed more and more towards getting MW3 than I am now. EA just seem to want to fuck everything over for the PC gamer for no reason. I don't understand it. Why don't they listen to what the community actually wants?
I could see them saying not on release but they should have at least said they will try in the future.
When people asked about mod tools earlier this year they say they MIGHT make mod tools after release but now for some reason they just reply with no

Sorry what?
facebook has much more users than battlelog will and its not slow at all

What the fuck is this, some kind of MMO?
3. It's open to abuse.
Kiddies are pissing their pants with sheer joy, knowing how much rage they'll be able to cause by fucking with the battlelog website. Do we really want another PSN fiasco to happen? We all know how much strife there is between different FPS communities. This is like putting a giant red FUCK-ME-UP button on your new Ferrari.
1. It won't be slow (I hope). I'm pretty sure EA will prepare their servers to handle the amount of load (and Beta testing will help too).
2. Erm, I'm pretty sure this would be the same with an in-game browser (I can't browse TF2 servers while the Steam servers are busy).
3. If you mean that all our personal information will get stolen, it already happened (BF:H leak), so I hope they learned their lesson, and this has nothing to do with the server browser.
I haven't tried BF3 yet, but everyone who tried it said it was really fast, so I don't really care about the browser.
What does bother me though is that Origin has to be running, even though it isn't needed for anything while playing the game.
Steam does the same thing Battlelog does.
No it doesn't, Battlelog is dedicated to just Battlefield 3
even then, that's not really relevant

you're right, they pulled this bullshit all the time when they said that the 3D spotting was just fine and that the commo rose wont be in the game

Did you even read my post? The bold part basically repeated the thing I said. I'm no supporter of this Battlelog thing, but I'm a supporter of the game BF3. I'm going to buy it and enjoy it no matter what.
I mean 64 players and jets, nothing will stop me. NOT EVEN PUNKBUSTER!!

You didn't hear about the new punkbuster? Requires biometric verification now. And a lawyer standing over you at all times to ensure you're not cheating.
Well now its clear that Red Orchestra is clearly over BF3 in my book.
Punkbuster will find a way. Just you wait...

Oh god the ammount of teamkilling from spawn to the jets is going to be insane again.
But essentialy this, they could make the game taze your ringpiece everytime you click and people will still buy and play with only minor grumbling.
Well now its clear that Red Orchestra is clearly over BF3 in my book.
Oh god yes, RO2 is the prime example of a new game that sets the standard for how PC games should be made.

Facepunch has had the mentality for a while that any large game publisher/producer is bad and evil while indie developers are gods, even though DICE were originally indie i doubt anyone here cares because EA are just money-grabbing dlc-addicted bastards!
i kid but yeah this was a dumb move
Just canceled my preorder, BF3 was probably going to be GOTY for me. Not going to buy it until we get a real server browser.
Like not giving us mod tools to push DLC on us? Like forcing Origin because they can't compete with Steam, and therefore need to force it on us to get it going? Forcing us to use an external server list that almost surely will rely on Origin to be absolutely sure we don't somehow manage to disable it?
They know very well what we want and don't want, this isn't a misguided attempt to please us. All this bullshit began with Origin (well except the mod tools, that began with Oblivion and WaW when the industry noticed that hey, people will buy our overpriced tiny DLC for what they used to buy an entire expansion big as the vanilla game).
I get what you mean.
Shitty way to distribute the game and a shitty way to access game servers. Obviously the game industry has changed a lot since the BF1942 days. Very much is about money.
But really, the game itself seems to be quite intact. I mean they gave us 64 players back, gave us back jets, commander role, and loads of other stuff. I'm really happy about that. I'm not going to boycott the game, but if there are things that can be done to remove the battlelog browser, I'd happily participate.
One day someone will record a meeting from an EA office, and like a feel good family film it will catch the manager red handed and he will be arrested or whatever.
Dev:The SDK is ready for release! Plus we have included all the features the customers want whilst avoiding feature creep. We also finished on time for the release date!
Manager:Destroy the SDK! Tell them their PC's can't run it! Then when they are at the upmost point of their despair sell them DLC! Make it overpriced! Make it contain content already on the disk! Then push the release date back for more marketing! Don't release demos! Get rid fo the server.exe for our own monopoly on overpriced poor quality servers running only the settings we allow! Sell their details to mercenaries to break in at night and wreck up the place! Give the best pre-order DLC to a single corner shop in Chad! Make the knife selectable but then make it a homing insta kill weapon! REMOVE THE FLAILY ARM RAGDOLLS (Dev blacks out from shock at this point)
But still. Good movie, I'd rent it twice. Even if Flavour Flav was in it.
Just canceled my preorder, BF3 was probably going to be GOTY for me. Not going to buy it until we get a real server browser.
and so it begins.
Its obvious that they must use launch params, because an ingame server browser is too much for it to handle
>> battlefield3.exe -server 123:456:789 -fov 15
Not buying.
A different sort of server browser?
THATS RIDICULOUS?!
WITHOUT EVEN GIVING THIS STRANGE NEW BROWSER A TRY, IM GOING TO SAY THIS GAME FUCKING SUCKS
